First on CNN: Team Romney explores blocking Trump at RNC

Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney's inner circle says.

The 2012 GOP nominee's advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.

"It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention," said the source.

Romney is focused on suppressing Trump's delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.

But implicit in Romney's request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party's banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee. Another name these sources mentioned was House Speaker Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate in 2012.

Cruz is my clear favorite, but team Romney can stick this idea up where the sun don’t shine.

If no one gets to the convention with enough votes to secure the nomination outright, I am extremely confident that Cruz would make sure that only one of the candidates currently in the race gets the nomination; and don’t be surprised if Cruz makes that point clear tonight.

I am not a Trump fan, but will vote for him if he is the nominee because the alternative is totally unacceptable.

It’s going to be interesting to see if Rubio and Cruz team up and cancel events in certain states, effectively consolidating support in order to take out Trump. That’ll tell us who is establishment and what the actual plan is.

Doubt it will happen, but if they follow the rules, what is the problem? Would that really be any different than Trump benefitting because of the large number of candidates splitting the non-Trump votes?

If Rubio were to drop out today, or even after this Saturday, Cruz would likely have a pretty good path to the nomination. If Rubio were to drop out before Saturday, Cruz would be a lock for the nomination.

Personally, I think primaries should have runoffs of the top two if no one gets 50% of the votes like in most state race primaries. However, that is not what is currently in place now, so the party needs to stick with the current rules even though they appear to currently favor Trump.

The rules are what the rules are; just follow them.

Anybody but Hillary.

I am totally against TRUMP but this is ridiculous!!!!

DUE PROCESS.... the will of the people is a must!If TRUMP is elected by the people, Trump should be the nominee. I will choose whether to vote or not. That will be my choice. BUT I don't want that choice to be rigged!!!

Some of us don’t want to hand an emotionally unstable man like Trump who praises dictators, is reluctant to condemn neo Nazis, and wants to restrict the freedom of the press the power of the presidency. Many of us truly think that Trump is a dangerous demagogue and possibly even a fascist.

You ought to try a different paragraph...One that isn't full of lies...

Unfortunately I don’t think the GOP establishment want to beat Hillary Clinton. They think if they can split the Republican vote in any way they can get their preferred candidate, Clinton, elected.

Herman Cain was on Fox saying Romney was using Rubio’s talking points. He blasted the GOP Elites for not respecting the voters choices.

I am so angry at these attacks and threats of blocking Trump at convention ...and I support Cruz!

Why should Cruz withdraw to support any other candidate?

Indeed
And why would anyone believe that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want to help Cruz in any way?

It's not about the rules, it's about an end run by the Washington establishment. I'm very curious about that.

If Trump goes into the convention with less than the 1237 delegates needed to win, then maneuvers to dump him are fair. He didn't clinch the deal. Most delegates went to someone else.

If he has the delegates, however, and the GOPe still tries to dump him then the party will implode and deservedly so..

Have they forgotten 1912? Teddy had enough support at the Conventions that when the bosses blocked him that he was able to split the party and give the election to Wilson. I hope that push come to shove that some of the other candidates will threaten to to thrown their support to Trump if the party leaders refuse to accept the outcomes of popular elections.

It is obvious who is behind this

Here is a pic of Bush BFF attorney Ben (recount) Ginsberg discussing how to go about the RNC convention, which he has already done regarding Rand Paul. He went to state after state to secure the super delegates to ensure they voted for Romney.

The Bush's are behind this. It is way too coordinated. It's obvious the Bush cartel are very very upset with Trump. They do not care about the will of million of voters who want Trump.

Bush Sr didn't care about losing to Clinton he knew his son would likely become POTUS and would start the dynasty.

W won 2 terms but he had to ruin McCain first. McCain was then promised the the next nomination because of how W treated him.

Then it was McCains turn but he had to ruin Romney first. Romney was then promised the next nomination because of how McCain treated him.

Then it was Jeb's turn. But Trump was more popular.

George H Bush and W and Jeb are doing this because Trump embarrassed them, for the low energy comment and how W handled Iraq.

This IS a Bush hit piece and calling in favors from all their friends to go after Trump, including McCain and Romney. The Bush family would vote for Hillary over Trump each and every day. They openly campaign for Hillary if they could. They can't, but their surrogates are already campaigning for Hillary. So this is their way of campaigning and its an attempt to take out Trump because he has destroyed them in their eyes. Hope they are so very unsuccessful, just wish they would get called out, especially George H Bush who was at the last debate giving a sign to cut Trumps throat before the debate. Nasty NASTY vindictive Bush Mob family.

Well, that's another kiss of death for the Cruz campaign if so. The Jeb campaign burned money like a camp fire.

“Why should Cruz withdraw to support any other candidate? That would be a betrayal of his ideals and his supporters.”

Depends on whether the GOPe is playing Cruz as a patsy, and if so, whether he would rather be a patsy who helps lead the GOPe the promised land of a brokered convention resulting in, say, a Romney/Ryan ticket that was guaranteed to lose to Hillary, with Barrack Hussien Obama subsequently being appointed by President Hillary Clinton to replace the late Antonin Scalia to drive the final nail in the U.S. Constitution’s coffin, such that the U.S. Constitution will thus finally be permanently relegated by the “Progressives” to its well deserved position as a historically curious piece of meaningless dusty old parchment scribbled by a bunch of irrelevant dead white men, and any rights you may formerly have enjoyed under its former protection will be gone forever.

Now THAT would be a betrayal of his ideals and his supporters!

I’m not sure if you’re responding to my post #56 or it’s just a case of great minds; if the latter, check out my post #56.

No...I was just into the first few posts when I reponded...Seems to be a few who are thinking this way...

Interesting. Will the Cruz backers on FR support this if it means undermining the will of the electorate/delegates?

No we won't. But you will probably continue posting that foolishness regardless.
