In major blow to Ted Cruz, Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama endorses Donald Trump for GOP nomination

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), whose hard-line conservative stances on immigration and trade have made him a favorite of the party’s base, endorsed Donald Trump's White House bid during a joint appearance here in his home state Sunday.

"Politicians have promised for 30 years to fix illegal immigration. Have they done it? Donald Trump will do it," Sessions said at the Madison City Schools Stadium, where thousands gathered to hear Trump speak. "I've told Donald Trump this isn’t a campaign, this is a movement."

Sen. Sessions is more “conservative” than a boatload of FReepers.

Donnie cannot control congress and they will not bow to him like they did Obamba.
That says more about Congress than it does about "Donnie".

By the same token, what has Sessions done extra in the same damn senate?

Are you serious? Sessions almost singlehandedly led the fight against W's two major amnesty pushes in 2006 and 2007, years before anyone outside of GOPe circles had ever heard of Ted Cruz. And Sessions again led the fight against the 2013 amnesty push along with leading the fight against TPA and TPP and the other sell-out trade deals being negotiated.

Ted's major 'accomplishment' in the Senate was to stage two or three publicity stunts, which had not chance of success, but which game him material to use in campaign speeches and TV ads telling everyone how he fought the 'Washington cartel'. And which he is now doing ad nauseum.

No one is really "leading a fight" when they are staging a hopeless publicity stunt.

If you are questioning "sense", what sense does it make to support someone who, for the first 60 years of his life, vocally and financially supported leftist candidates and positions, still supports many leftist positions, and only recently, when he wanted to run for president, started mouthing conservative talking points.

I haven't read any of his books but those who have read them paint quite a different picture than you do...For the past five years Trump has donated almost exclusively to the Republicans...

Of course, it all doesn't matter, because he'll "build the wall!!!!!!!" and he does a really good job at belittling his opponents.

But Rubio is the real conservative and we know he will tear down the wall...Like I said, doesn't make much sense...

IIRC he didn’t say “either”, he said “and”. Not sure if that means they’re a package deal or they’re the same thing so it doesn’t matter which.

Let’s line up what any conservative senator has accomplished in the minority or the year of majority with McConnell at the lead. I’d like to understand what should have been done. What has Sessions or Lee done in this time period?

1) Work with Paul Ryan to pass TPA

Free trade is a conservative point of view. Protectionism is the liberal point of view and favors unions. Trump will make trade deals. You will not get on FR and rail against them as you are here with TPA. You will dutifully get on FR and refer to these trade deals as “America winning!” If Trump favors his own crony business habits which include using illegal immigrants to build buildings, you will ignore that. The key point here is Who is president?

If Cruz was president, it would insure the most conservative interpretation and Enforcement of our trade legislation. Neither Obama or Trump insure conservative interpretations of trade deals.

2) Voted for the Corker Iran Bill

Cruz has taken the hardest line against Iran of any politician to date. He also got the Obama administration to agree with him in refusing the Iranian diplomat travel status— something lampooned in the media and by the Left until Cruz forced Obama to agree with him.

Trump knows little or nothing about Iran or it as a threat. Cruz is demonstrably better on Iran than Trump.

The Corker bill was an enforcement bill that required legitimate inspections of the Iranian nuclear program— something we sorely need now.

3) Supported an increase in H1B Visas

H1Bs are limited and actually have enforcement provisions. There are smart ways to improve immigration. H1B is a good area and quite different from the unlimited immigration occurring now. I don’t think Trump is opposed to H1B and I am quite sure Trump uses H1B for his businesses.

4) Went to the Southern Border with Glenn Beck to pass out soccer balls and Teddy Bears to ILLEGALS

Private charitable actions are not wrong. The administration is deliberately trying to create cruel and harsh conditions here in Texas to stir up leftist activism in our state. Cruz is smart to fight back at a private charitable level.

It is better than employing illegal immigrants to build your buildings as Trump does.

5) Engaged in slimy behavior in Iowa (sleazy mailers, lied about the Carson campaign leaving the primary)

No. Trump makes these sleazy allegations. These flyers have been used for over ten years by various campaigns. I think it is fine to point out how people have not voted for conservative candidates in the past. Of course Trumpsters would object to this because they don’t want conservatives to win. Trump calls Cruz a pussy and the worst liar he has ever met. This is all part of that general meme.

This is because Cruz is worse than Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders and rapist in chief Bill Clinton. Ethical people are democrats. Conservatives are not ethical— especially if they beat Trump in Iowa. Trump is for winners— not losers like Cruz.

Cruz shut down the Federal government in 2013 over the objections of everyone. That led to the 2014 flip of senate into Republican hands. Pundits, republicans and so many others said the shutdown was a disaster.

You carefully avoid Cruz’s victories before the Supreme Court because here again he was powerfully effective and conservative. Cruz did work with sessions to stop the gang of 8 bill. That could have easily passed. Cruz organized House members to resist the moderating forces of GOP— helping form the Freedom Caucus.

You cannot admit that Cruz is conservative. You defend Trump reflexively and no matter what Trump says about how great Planned Parenthood is or how great government health care is or how great Harry Reid is, you unflinchingly hit your keyboard to parse the conservatism of Cruz.

There has not been a candidate as conservative as Cruz for a very long time. Reagan was liberal by conservative— passing massive amnesty and nominating Sandra O connor.

The classless manner by which Trump supporters attack Cruz and his supporters is completely unnecessary. Pretending that Cruz is not conservative is a fantasy. There is an abundance of evidence that Trump is not only not conservative, but he actively dislikes them and works to oppose them.

It is perfectly legitimate and right for people at FR to criticize this and to make arguments supporting Cruz.

I think you may be worrying unnecessarily. Jeff Sessions is a patriot. He wouldn’t give his endorsement lightly.

Well, it begins. Sessions didn’t endorse Cruz so the cultists are slandering Sessions. Sessions is a Patriot & a great man. Shame on you.

I like Cruz but the intolerance of his more fanatical worshippers is disgusting. Sessions is a much better man than you’ll ever be. Grow up.

Well, Cruz did threw wrenches into the gears of the Sinate which is what I consider the greatest accomplishment possible. But I think this removes Cruz from the game in a week or so.

“I like Cruz but the intolerance of his more fanatical worshippers is disgusting.”

I wonder if they even are for Cruz. They aren’t doing him any favors with their vitriol. By attacking Trump in Cruz’ name they damage both of them. Maybe they are for Rubio.

And let’s not forget to add that Ted Cruz has teamed up with amnesty-loving, Marco Rubio. Cruz a real conservative? I don’t think so.

If that’s true, then it’s obvious that Cruz is horrible at making deals, because he needs to be making deals with TRUMP, not RUBIO!

“I am mystified why trump supporters have to put so much hate on people who don’t have trump as their first choice.”

I can’t imagine why you are mystified. You behave the same way that they do. You zealots in both camps are poisoning FR for the rest of us.
