Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant on Thursday defended proclaiming April as Confederate Heritage Month in his state.
Earlier this month, Bryant quietly issued his proclamation, saying people should "earnestly strive to understand our heritage."
A spokesman for the governor said his predecessors from both major parties have made similar proclamations.
"Gov. Bryant believes Mississippi's history deserves study and reflection, no matter how unpleasant or complicated parts of it may be," Clay Chandler said. "Like the proclamation says, gaining insight from our mistakes and successes will help us move forward."

Here in the Gay State (Massachusetts) I routinely have bumper stickers of Republicans ripped off my car.I’ve even had my car vandalized at the spot from which the sticker was removed.Given that I drive a reasonably nice car the only reason I don’t display a Stars & Bars bumper sticker here is because I’m afraid that someone might try to firebomb my car...maybe even with me in it.

On behalf of all of us who tirelessly work to defend our southern heritage, it is great to see someone fight back.
Think I will revisit the Vicksburg Battlefield and spend me some big tourist dollars in Mississippi this Spring.
I don’t advertise my politics on my car for that reason; we can just quietly do our own thing, like celebrating Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on Martin Luther King Day - or even celebrating Martin Luther if that’s your cup of tea. Lee & Jackson have birthdays close to King’s (though Martin Luther shares his with the Marine Corps on November 10th), so each can pick and choose as they see fit.
