Seas Are Rising at Fastest Rate in Last 28 Centuries
New York Times ^ | February 22, 2016 | By JUSTIN GILLIS

The oceans are rising faster than at any point in the last 28 centuries, and human emissions of greenhouse gases are primarily responsible, scientists reported Monday.

They added that the flooding that is starting to make life miserable in many coastal towns - like Miami Beach; Norfolk, Va.; and Charleston, S.C. - was largely a consequence of those emissions, and that it is likely to grow worse in coming years.

The ocean could rise as much as three or four feet by 2100, as ocean water expands and the great ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica begin to collapse.

Experts say the situation will grow far worse in the 22nd century and beyond, likely requiring the abandonment of many of the world's coastal cities.

Scientists already knew that the sea level rose drastically at the end of the last ice age, by almost 400 feet, causing shorelines to retreat by up to 100 miles in places. They also knew that the sea level had basically stabilized, like the rest of the climate, over the past several thousand years, the period when human civilization arose and spread across the earth.

Any time I hear the phrase “ Experts say....” I know it is a lie before I even waste my time reading it.

If it weren't for those pesky smelt, we could still have a vibrant vast farming area in the middle of CA.

See, I never did get that. Smelt are fish. If they die and just float in the shallows in the sun a while and you go check them, what are you going to tell me about them? That they smelt. Well, they smelt before, they smelt after. What's the big deal?

Sharks will be swimming in your back yards. Sharknados everywhere. We’re doomed.

What difference, at this point, does it make?

Now how did that happen without global warming?

duh... wooly mammoths had a highly developed industrial manufacturing base which depended on fossil fuels. didn't you learn that in gubmint school?!

Dear JUSTIN GILLIS:

Let’s do an experiment. Put an ice cube in a glass. Fill the glass to the top. When the ice melts what happens?

Oh...

Sheesh.

5.56mm

Well, go check on the Pilgrim's Plymouth Rock.

I did last time I was in the area.

The ocean level has not changed a bit since I first visited it as a kid quite a few years ago.

Humanities degrees.
Are those the degrees that are not quite as useful as toilet paper?

So many degrees and I forget which are which.

Humanities degrees are the ones that allow you to get a government job where you decide what the settled science is on any subject, and then allocate it tax dollars depending on your decision.

Heeeeeyyyyy....if we got rid of them low-flow toilets and went to say, 10 gallons, we could sequester a boatload of water.

Yep! (But only if they didn't flush!)

Actually, I think the sea levels are only rising because of all the poo in the third world that goes down the river.

If they stopped pooping in the third world, then the sea level would stabilize.

I am tempted to use a descriptor such as “horsesh**” or “bullsh**”. However, that would be too low class.

Yeah - what you said.

I thought Obama had the oceans receding. Actually, weren’t these same oceans supposed to be dried up by now, ala Ted Danson?

These people need to shut up and start contributing something worthwhile to society.

“Physics tells us that sea-level change and temperature change should go hand in hand,” Dr. Kopp said. “This new geological record confirms it.”

These comments like this are so amusing, if it was not so dangerous to the future of our political future. In the academic world, I am what is called a geomorphologist. I study land forms and the forces that shaped them over the past one to two million years. Before climate change became the cash cow of the academic world, we would argue about details of the post latest glacial epoch and try to understand what was going on around the world. These days, the so called scientists are trying to morph the data into a political landscape in order to generate more grant dollars into their pockets. They are idiots, but the government idiots are encouraging and funding them because it sorts their political agenda.

This is a perfect example of lunacy in action. Many will embrace this position, but it is nonsense.

Sea levels have been rising since the retreat of the last glacial advance. When we enter into the new Ice Age, sea level will begin to drop. These cycles are beyond human life expectation, and are even beyond human recorded history. Deal with it.

They already poop in the rice paddies. It feeds the fish and shrimp they sell to the Americans...

I thought Obama had the oceans receding.

He did, before the Mooch went to Hawaii...

Maybe she took her entourage swimming. That would displace enough to account for a millimeter or two...

OK then, worth *slightly* more than toilet paper but require neither intelligence nor character.

I guess these are like all those geniuses who have degrees in African Culture and Womens Studies.
Real Einstein and Tesla material there.
