Trump poised to step on the GOP accelerator

CHARLESTON, S.C.

Things sure look good for Donald Trump.

The Republican presidential race expanded across the country Sunday, and polls show the real estate mogul ahead in eight of the dozen states voting in the next nine days.

Trump has now won primaries in two very different states, center-right New Hampshire and evangelical-dominated South Carolina. And the Republican Party system of choosing a presidential nominee favors candidates who continue to win early primaries and caucuses.

“He seems to have about a third of the Republican electorate under his spell, and it’s a durable, non-ideological coalition,” said Kyle Kondik, managing editor at Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball Sunday.

The biggest hope for stopping Trump is for a single strong challenger to emerge, and so far that hasn’t happened.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., finished second Saturday in South Carolina, but he was 10 percentage points behind Trump and barely edged Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, even though Rubio barnstormed the state with popular Gov. Nikki Haley and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.

Rubio also lacks an obvious state where he can win in the next few weeks. He should be a favorite in Tuesday’s Nevada caucus. Rubio lived in Las Vegas as a child, was a church member, and Sunday picked up the endorsement of Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nevada. But a CNN/ORC poll last week showed Trump with a huge lead, with more support than Rubio and Cruz combined.

Wouldn’t the exit polling have picked up on this, it that was the case?

Crossovers usually occur when the opposition party has no challengers. Why would a large number of Dems cross over in a year when they have their own horserace?

So if Trump gets the Republican nomination, are you becoming a Trumpster?

No, I'll be a reluctrump. I'll vote for him, but I won't like it.

Glenn Beck is crazy plus he’s a Mormon. He’s a problem.

You are right its not a done deal by a longshot but the good news is Trump will sail into the SEC with 3 wins under his belt and doubtless bigger and better poll numbers because of it. He has GA and AL wrapped up likely the other SEC states with the possible exception of AR. But that could also change in the next 9 days. Momentum is a wonderous thing in politics.

Two years from now I sincerely believe that all of us will cheering President Trump on

Who can force Obama to vacate the office Balding_Eagle, and what process could/would be used? Please answer if you have any legal knowledge. This question goes out to all. I have no idea.

I have only historical knowledge.

The very same question was asked at the end of Clintons term, and probably for at least six months it was batted back and forth.

you know how that ended up.

Obamas term will end the same way, with the swearing in of a new president.

Trump is winning open primaries. he's being pushed on us by democRATS crossing over and voting for him because they know he'll be easy to beat in the general election.

I think that is a bit of a reach.

In case you haven't noticed, the Democrats have a knock-down, drag-out fight of their own going on right now. I'm against open primaries as well, but the effect this cycle is muted due to the Dem's primary battle. Open primaries bite you a lot more when the other side doesn't have a fight of their own.

The Trumpers have directed much of their hate at Cruz because he seemed the biggest threat.

I like both Trump AND Cruz. From my vantage point, there are supporters on both sides who went off the rails in their attacks on the other. Republicans eating their own once again.

He is the pet of the networks and the GOPe.

If you are referring to Trump, please send me some of what you're smoking. Trump is no pet of either the networks or the GOPe. They've both thrown everything they can at him to knock him down, but he doesn't play by the same set of rules as most candidates.

Come on...

The way I know a person means what he says is that he sticks by it in face of opposition, ridicule and threats.

So when Trump says he will build a wall, I believe him. (Besides his ego can’t pass up the opportunity to be immortalized for the next 100 years by that wall). Heck, even the pope, the POPE!! gave him grief about that, and almost excommunicated him (by saying he is not a christian)

When he says that he will halt the immigration of Syrian refugees I believe him. (And you would have to be a complete idiot to allow it to go on). ISIS took over Syrian state offices and got Official blank passports, and the Passport and official document producing machines. Even if a Syrian refugee is fully documented (and most aren’t) you have no idea if an ISIS operative is getting in.

When he says that he will find a way to have Mexico pay for the wall, I believe he means it. That was one of the most ridiculed statements he made, and he stood by it.

Etc.

Most politicians would ‘clarify’, ‘evolve’, ‘pivot’, ‘reassess’ their positions based on heavy incoming and opposition.

I particularly don’t care how ‘pure’ a conservative he is, (in fact that would be a bad thing as he would not get cross-over votes).

What I care about is that he will put AMERICA first, and that is why I am voting for him.

PS: I don’t know why people call him a big government statist, I also believe he means it when he says he will cut the size of the government and will attempt to balance the budget. It is simply in his personal make up, life experience and training, he always brags about projects on time and below budget. So I believe he will cut government.

Nice take.

IMHO, the ignominious collapse of Jeb-You/re-Next drove a huge stake into the heart of the establishment GOPe. Forget erectile dysfunction. The fallout of being politically castrated is devastating to a powermonger.

The GOPe/s de-b***ing began when candidate Jeb said he didn't need the Republican base .... and proceeded to carry on, business as usual, as his numbers sunk into oblivion.

Jeb telling a key bloc of Republican voters to take a hike is the consequence of the country club GOPe demeaning and dismissing conservatives as not being worthy of their elite party.

The entitled Jeb-You/re-Next took it as Gospel when he heard the Bush elders condescending attitude towards conservatives....people to whom the aristocratic Bush/s feel socially superior.

But the GOPe should know this: they will get no pity from conservatives for their woes......and we aim to stick their noses in the mess they made every frickin chance we get.
