Donald Trump has a plan to make America's health care great again.
It's very simple, he says: Lock the best health care policy minds in a room -- and don't let them out until they've crafted a plan for providing terrific coverage for everyone.
But the strategy, laid out in Trump's most recent book, begs the question: Who exactly would be locked in that room? And who is advising him on ideas which are as unorthodox for a GOP frontrunner as his candidacy?
Trump has repeatedly said everyone should have access to health care -- going so far as to say he supports "the mandate" in a town hall meeting in South Carolina Thursday night (although he walked that back on Twitter, saying he was referring to the rule that insurers must cover people with pre-existing illnesses). He also says government should pick up the tab for the poor so no one is "dying on the streets" -- a stance seemingly far to the left of the rest of the Republican presidential field.
Sam Clovis, Trump's national policy adviser, insists the campaign is talking with lots of health care experts -- but declined to name any of those advisers.
"We have experts around the world who help us on these various topics," Clovis said in an interview with POLITICO. "We get very frank and honest input if we do not expose these people to the scrutiny of the press. ⦠As we get further along they might want to come out of the shadows."
To shed light on the advisers shaping Trump's eclectic thinking, POLITICO scoured the landscape of notable policy wonks -- from academics to lobbyists to congressional staffers to think tank fellows -- but was unable to find anyone, on either side of the political divide,

In the old days, there was no artificial insulin, or antibiotics, or heart surgery, or cancer treatments, or so on and so on.
If you got sick with a life-threatening illness, you either healed on your own or you died.
Medical care wouldn't be near as expensive if it didn't involve a lot more nowadays than just setting broken bones.
But how is he going to save over $300 billion when the government only pays less than half that to begin with?
maybe he is talking about the homeless or the disabled.
I’m not sure what people he is talking about...such a broad statement.
Perhaps he is just not knowledgeable about people dying in the streets.
I think he is letting conservatives know he will not tolerate “people dying in the streets” What he does not know is that conservatives are the most caring and giving.
Well...I noticed that you can’t (honestly) refute any of those descriptive terms and observations about Trump. It’s called a personal opinion...and everyone has one....even you.
Through payroll deduction, happens all the time. But the account needs to be portable, and rolled over year-to-year.
Also, MSA policies should never be much higher than $2-3 thoudand deductible. Some are $15-20 thousand
"If an insurance company isn't currently doing business in my state why should I want to buy a policy from them? And why would they want to sell me one?"
That's sounds like a personal preference rather than an "unworkable problem". I prefer to insure with a major carrier for my car, but there's a hell of a lot more folks that go with some Vern Fonk or The General. Health insurance options would be similar, and "if you like your name brand, you can keep your name brand". Also local doctors in my area are partnering up with their own options. Sounds like you may prefer something along that line.
"So what is Trump planning that will improve them?"
Again, guessing. Scrapping Obamacare and those asinine premiums will free up cash. Some may choose to invest those extra dollars in tax deferred/free health care savings accounts.
By bringing back affordable medical insurance, and privatizing MediCaid. IE shrinking medical welfare to only the truly needy.
Watch the first segment on Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson.
People should be able to shop procedure costs and put hospitals in competition with each other. You won't believe the variation from hospital to hospital.
"Cost shifting" to pay for "free healthcare" is what drives up cost....gouging you to pay for freeloaders. That practice should be banned.
The Donald wants to restore competition by allowing healthcare to cross state lines.
That alone will fix the problem, however you have the issue of some people who are so poor that even when healthcare at low cost is available from somewhere they won’t buy it. In this case if reverts to welfare and Trump needs a plan for this. (I personally liked McCain’s idea of letting the impoverished put their health care on their food stamp card.)
I believe I have seen signs that the good Lord may be working out a multi-variable problem to America’s current good, only one part of which is Trump’s agenda-formation methodology. The other part is a gospel revival.
These would dovetail much as Nehemiah’s plans did with the willingness of Cyrus the Great.
Cruz may not be “it” because his notions are too preconceived, including a Dominionism factor that heaven only knows the extent of (but his father did stress it heavily, and the nut often does not fall from the tree). God wants us to be open for Him to push His plans on us rather than vice versa. Trump could be such a door, if he is sincere about his “deal” dynamic.
Don't states need to expand Medicaid? And haven't about half refused to do that under Obamacare? What part of Terifficare make them change their mind and expand it when Obamacare couldn't?
That's sounds like a personal preference rather than an "unworkable problem"
I'm asking what are the benefits to me to go to an insurance company who does not currently do business in my state, and what reason to they have to sell me insurance?
Scrapping Obamacare and those asinine premiums will free up cash.
So they do without health care insurance?
Some may choose to invest those extra dollars in tax deferred/free health care savings accounts.
How long would they have to save up to afford a physical? Or cancer treatments?
I agree and I understand what he is saying and why he is saying it. It just makes it sound like he doesn't know what he is talking about. I wish that he would figure out a better way to say it.
And if that takes place, the glory will go to God and not to either Trump or to “religious people.” Honest observers will see that both Trump and the people, oriented as it were by coincidence, were essential ingredients in the formula.
Yes, I’m mongo optimistic, as so is Trump, though he does not know gospel from goose feathers at this point.
How?
...and privatizing MediCaid.
Some states are already privatizing Medicaid. My neighboring state of Kansas did. Expected savings haven't been realized, quality of service is down, and rolls have been cut.
“I noticed that you cant (honestly) refute any of those descriptive terms”
Ridiculous.
Those are personal feelings that a therapist may be able to help you with, not opinions based on fact.
It might be possible that Trumpcare will be set up less as a jobs program for the IRS and other miscellaneous bureaucrats — far less. Just maybe.
Good point... we don’t want to wallow in despair just out of principle.
This might be a bigger problem than any of those, and in need of more work to formulate. The best thing Trump would be able to say, until his think tank comes together, is pretty much what he has said. We will consider this, that, the other possibility.
I’m guessing you’re one of those guys who thought Kennedy was a carnival barking loon because he didn’t detail the Saturn 5 rocket plans when he announced we are going to the moon.
I’ve shared Trumps policies. You think they aren’t detailed enough ? So sorry.
