Who's advising Trump on health care? His ideas are as unorthodox as his candidacy.
Politico ^ | 02/21/2016 | Paul Demko

Donald Trump has a plan to make America's health care great again.

It's very simple, he says: Lock the best health care policy minds in a room -- and don't let them out until they've crafted a plan for providing terrific coverage for everyone.

But the strategy, laid out in Trump's most recent book, begs the question: Who exactly would be locked in that room? And who is advising him on ideas which are as unorthodox for a GOP frontrunner as his candidacy?

Trump has repeatedly said everyone should have access to health care -- going so far as to say he supports "the mandate" in a town hall meeting in South Carolina Thursday night (although he walked that back on Twitter, saying he was referring to the rule that insurers must cover people with pre-existing illnesses). He also says government should pick up the tab for the poor so no one is "dying on the streets" -- a stance seemingly far to the left of the rest of the Republican presidential field.

Sam Clovis, Trump's national policy adviser, insists the campaign is talking with lots of health care experts -- but declined to name any of those advisers.

"We have experts around the world who help us on these various topics," Clovis said in an interview with POLITICO. "We get very frank and honest input if we do not expose these people to the scrutiny of the press. … As we get further along they might want to come out of the shadows."

To shed light on the advisers shaping Trump's eclectic thinking, POLITICO scoured the landscape of notable policy wonks -- from academics to lobbyists to congressional staffers to think tank fellows -- but was unable to find anyone, on either side of the political divide,

HIs Twitter clarification the other day was consistent with his position and was well stated. I assume that he will be giving a better delivery in the future; it has just been a pet peeve of mine.

Well Obamacare has kind of stranded us on the moon and the task now becomes to construct a ship that is going to fly us back.

“Through payroll deduction, happens all the time. But the account needs to be portable, and rolled over year-to-year.”

Correct. We have one we need to cash out every year.

How?

By repealing ObamaCare and letting the carriers do the rest.

Expected savings haven't been realized

It will happen, governments can't do anything better than the private sector, but they can really waste money.

quality of service is down

If done properly, as an incentive MediCaid shouldn't be as good as real insurance. Low incomes should be able to buy into it, and most should pay some premium, based on their income...and a co-pay.

The providers should be receiving commercial reimbursement rates.

and rolls have been cut.

Good, that's the general idea.

I'm guessing you're one of those guys who thought Kennedy was a carnival barking loon because he didn't detail the Saturn 5 rocket plans when he announced we are going to the moon.

Kennedy didn't say, "I'm scrapping NASA's plan and instituting one of my own that is much, much better." If he had I imagine people would have been asking him for the details.

I've shared Trumps policies. You think they aren't detailed enough ? So sorry.

You haven't shared Trump's policies because he doesn't have any.

If “disingenuous”, “bragging”, “arrogant”, and another “Bragging” is the cause of your despair you really do need therapy.

“Well Obamacare has kind of stranded us on the moon and the task now becomes to construct a ship that is going to fly us back.”

Good point. Bad news is we’ll have to get CHINA to build us the freaking rocket to get back because “we aren’t winning anymore” !!!!

I'm asking what are the benefits to me to go to an insurance company who does not currently do business in my state

Because they give you exactly what you want, or a better price.

and what reason to they have to sell me insurance?

Because they want your money.

And (at least in an older ethic, though less and less so in this demoralized day) they believed they were putting out something good.

Which is why they got into the insurance biz and not into the porn biz.

“You haven’t shared Trump’s policies because he doesn’t have any.”

Actually I did.
Trump: Repeal ObamaCare, Remove insurance carrier boundaries, Promote health care savings accounts, Medicaid for the “uninsured”.

The most hilarious part of your little charade is you support Cruz, who’s policy is even more lacking in specifics, but is, for all practical purposes, identical.

Cruz-”If I am elected President, I will repeal Obamacare and propose commonsense reform that makes health care personal, portable, and affordable. I will expand competition in the marketplace, empower consumers and patients to make healthcare decisions with their doctors, and disempower the government from getting in between doctors and their patients.”

There may be a lot of money flowing through their coffers, but their profit margin is fairly modest.

Most (75-80%) of premium goes back out in claims. The remaining 20-25% is taxed to about half. Out of that +/- 12%, they pay overhead, mortgages and wages, they keep about 3-4%.

At least that’s how it was back when we still had health insurance companies.

Spot on!

Some folks in these parts want to make sure the bright work is polished, the paint is good and arguing over how to make the repair according to design specs, while the ship is sinking.

Someone needs to come in and plug the damn holes, so the pumps have a fighting chance.

We my FRiends, are the pumps.

Because they give you exactly what you want, or a better price.

If they don't do business in my state then they don't have a network of doctors, hospitals and pharmacies that they have negotiated prices with. Any claim I make would be paid at the out of network price so right off the bat I have a higher deductible and a lower percentage of covered costs. That's assuming that my doctor would accept them in the first place; not being in their network just adds to their expense for filing claims and any disputes they may have with the insurance company will have to be dealt with by an out-of-state insurance commission. So at best I'm paying more out-of-pocket than I would with an instate company. At worst I won't have anyone in my state who would accept it.

Because they want your money.

I'm assuming that most of a they want to make money. Their policy price is set based on what they expect to pay out. Selling a policy to me, in a state where they have no network that they have negotiated prices with, means that they pay whatever my doctor or hospital chooses to charge them. It's also based on medical costs in their state, which may be lower than those in Missouri. So their policy price is based on their known risks. Along I come with higher costs to them for my claims and no idea how big a risk I am. One thing is certain, their existing policy price will probably lose them money. So how much to they raise their rates for me? It's almost impossible for them to calculate it. So their safest course is to say, "Thanks but we'll pass on your business."

Lock the best health care policy minds in a room -- and don't let them out until they've crafted a plan for providing terrific coverage for everyone.

Which is a common practice in the business world which political reporters and politicians wouldn't know about.
