How the Rubio Campaign Will Argue Third Place Is Really a Victory - Again
NBC News ^ | February 20, 2016 | Gabe Gutierrez

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Hoping to rebound from New Hampshire's crushing fifth-place finish, Sen. Marco Rubio's campaign is preparing to finish third in South Carolina.

"To leave here in the top tier would a really nice comeback," a Rubio aide said, adding that some internal polling suggested it could even be a close race for second.

But critics - especially the Ted Cruz campaign - suggest that spinning a third-place finish into a "victory" is questionable, especially after Rubio netted the endorsements of Gov. Nikki Haley, Sen. Tim Scott and U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy.

"He's got the top three endorsements in the state," said Alice Stewart, a Cruz spokeswoman. "If he can't win here, the question is: how can he win anywhere else?"

The Rubio campaign counters that it's still a six-person race....

Candidates dropped out since Iowa. Where did their 3%and 4% go? Is anyone picking up a lion’s share of that?

The Cruz campaign made this big deal about a fantastic ground game. Im biased for a ground game and I bought it. But either it is a lie and they dont have a ground game or more likely the campaign staff, appointed campaign volunteer leaders, chairs of the campaign at the state, county and other levels are have no clue how to run a ground game.

It should be noted that the largest conservative training organization, CLI does not understand the ground game and advocates against anything more than a token ground game... last I checked.

You are so bitter. I hope someday you get help. Lying doesn’t help you or your cause.

I assume Cruz is now calling 3rd place a victory.

What were the expectations? I think most thought he’d finish in a close #2 or #3 and that’s what happened. Rubio and Cruz did cut into the margin of Trump no doubt, but that’s not exactly earth shattering.

Not at this point it’s not. He’ll get the big $$$$ coming in and then he can really compete. Rubio will be the nominee most likely. Trump needs to pay everyone to stay in to get the nomination.

It was so funny seeing the Gop/rino’s putting on the smiley face like they were happy that Rubio got thumped. Let’s kick the establishment to the back of the room.

Trump won’t lose to Hillary. Hillary’s campaign, and it is too close for comfort against Sanders, I doubt can survive the incoming from the FBI investigations. And Hillary has it coming! Trump may come up against some real contenders who replace Hillary, though.

I have thought more about it. I think you are right. Bush will endorse Rubio for one reason: Amnesty. He will take a liar for amnesty if that’s the only way he can get it. I don’t think he will like it.

Er, clue: Trump doesn’t need to beat Hillary today. Or next week. Or next month. Just one day in November.

Easy peasy.

So, is Cruz spinning that he won?

I doubt it. And Fox News won’t try to spin it for him like they did Rubio in Iowa. Have you forgotten that already?

Cruz ust said that third is a victory. He said he was really tied for second. Go figure.

Cruz 1st in Iowa, 3rd in NH, and 3rd in SC. NV is next on Tuesday.

Now that Bush has dropped out, Cruz will be in third in most of the primaries from here on out. The GOPe is coalescing around Rubio.
