ST. MATTHEWS - Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry says U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz went to Washington to shake up the political class, not join it.
"He is a courageous leader who went to Washington, D.C. to break up the Washington cabal. He went to Washington and did exactly what he said he was going to do," Perry said.
Perry and former U.S. Sen. Bob Smith of New Hampshire campaigned for Cruz in Calhoun County on Wednesday. Perry was running for the Republican nomination for president, but dropped out and endorsed Cruz.
The Republican presidential primary is Saturday.
During a small meet and greet at the Town and Country restaurant in St. Matthews, Perry talked about his time as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He said checklists play a major role in keeping pilots and their passengers safe.
"I would not want to get on an airliner if the captain and the copilot had not properly used their checklist," he said.
Cruz has two checklists that he uses in his life: the Bible and the U.S. Constitution, Perry said.
"I'm very supportive of him because he is a disciplined, strict constitutionalist who will lead our country with his eye always on the Bible and the United States Constitution," he said.
The former governor says he knows Cruz, a Texas senator, very well. Cruz has a passion about veterans, Perry said.
Cruz "will focus the efforts of the federal government appropriately to take care of our veterans. He will devolve power back to the states from today - a centralized government in Washington, D.C.," Perry said.
He says Cruz will also respect the Tenth Amendment, which defines the relationship between the states and federal government.
"I'm not sure that if you ask Donald Trump what the Tenth Amendment is today, if he could tell you," Perry said.
The rise of Trump represents the anger of the American people against Washington, D.C., Perry continued.
"Donald Trump is totally a response to Americans' anger with the political class in Washington, D.C.," Perry said.
S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley endorsed Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio, a U.S. senator from Florida, on Wednesday.
"Everybody has to make a decision. I know that Ted Cruz is the individual who best reflects the evangelical and veteran base in South Carolina," Perry said.
Smith said, "I feel our country is in deep trouble right now, and we can't afford to make a mistake."
He refers to Cruz as a consistent, dependable conservative.
Following the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, "I want to know that we're going to get someone nominated in that type of conservative. I want to be sure. I'm not sure with the other presidential candidates," Smith said.
Smith says Cruz will focus on repealing Obamacare, restoring the values America was founded on and strengthening the military.
"The military is asked to do too much with too little," Smith said. "They have their hands tied behind their back in a sense of they can't do what they want to do: to win the fight."
My understanding is Jim Robinson is a Trump supporter. That’s only based upon what I’ve read. You can provide sources to support your opinion though.
LOL...I'd be careful, the Viking Kittens haven't been feed yet this morning...
I think that the problem with the teddy bears at the border is that the stream of people coming across are being conned. BarakO has sold them a bill of good, that they are welcome and will be supported and will have a better life here. They stream in with no means of support, diseases and parasites we have no immunity to, overwhelm our schools, hospitals, and saftey nets. They undergo a gantlet of rape and horrendous experiences to get here because of these perceived promises. Maybe not as quick a fix, maybe less opportunity to grandstand but less apt to promote human misery.
I believe that it is the very opposite of Christian to encourage them to come here. Going with Teddy Bears is a nice optic but if it encouraged one extra child to be sent across the border alone it was a criminal act.
The most Christian thing to do is to have a strong border and immigration rules that are the same for everyone, to eliminate the tunnels and coyotes that prey on our southern neighbors.
Visiting orphanages, helping establish schools and hospitals in South/Central America those are wonderful things. Americans are warmhearted and generous people and those efforts should be applauded. Grandstanding at the border can only hurt the South/Central American people by sending the incorrect message and in my opinion uses the people crossing cynically for their press value while encouraging them in a dangerous and disruptive activity.
Are those people better off coming to America, dying or being raped in the process, being preyed on by coyotes, entering the welfare trap, being targeted by gangs or are they better off remaining in their country with their existing support systems and having their country improve with increasing industry and aid delivered locally via farming info, small business support etc?
I hope Old Salt, you will see my comments above in the spirit they were meant, as an outstretched hand. It was not an opportunity to attack just a sincere explanation of why I am troubled by an act.
As previously stated, I do believe owner of this website, Jim Robinson, is supportive of the Trump candidacy.

They are lies of omission. Ted does it a LOT.
“Also known as a continuing misrepresentation, a lie by omission occurs when an important fact is left out in order to foster a misconception. Lying by omission includes failures to correct pre-existing misconceptions.”
Actually, Mr. Robinson is a Cruz supporter as well as a Trump supporter and would vote for either man...
You can look it up...
Now thanks to you we now know, it's just the big money, New York bank website. Cult of personality is right.
Strawman and as hominem.
I want a non status quo successful business man as president. No other candidate comes remotely close to the skillset and leadership Trump brings.
FReegards.
You’re a Trump fan, right?
That’s a joke post, right?
=O
McConnell!? Did you mention McConnell - well, look - along with Rove and Boehner [and all those leadership Democrats and Committees]:
“....That $100,000 gift from Trump to the Boehner-allied super PAC was twice as big as his next-biggest contributions. [Trump’s] given $50,000 .. to Karl Rov’s American Crossroads (2010) [and $50,000 to] the pro-Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Kentuckians for Strong Leadership (2013)...
And then Trump gave McConnell’s PAC another $10,000 in Nov 2014.
And reaching across the aisle, Donald Trump has donated to the very politicians who shoved Obamacare down our throats - Pelosi, Reid, Clinton, Schumer [and many other Democrats], as well as giving large donations to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Don’t recall seeing the Teddy Cruzer love.
"ICE Council President, Crane represents the nation's approximately 5,800 frontline ICE officers, agents and personnel who are responsible for enforcing America's immigration laws in all 50 states and U.S. territories. For the first time ever, Crane details his behind-the-scenes interactions with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as Crane sought to protect the nation's ICE officers and national security.
Crane was integral to stopping Sen. Rubio's amnesty plan from passing the House - which, as Sen. Jeff Sessions recently explained, "was a near-run thing."
In his responses, Crane addresses an incident- first detailed by Breitbart News - in which Marco Rubio stood idly by as Crane was ejected from a Gang of Eight press conference for trying to ask a question on behalf of law enforcement.
Crane, an active duty ICE officer, has served as an officer for approximately 13 years and has been elected by his peers as the president of their union, as thus their voice on the national stage. Prior to joining ICE, Crane was a United States Marine.
What follows below are the complete, unedited responses of National ICE Council President Chris Crane."........................................
“No one expected Trump to be anything but Trump.”
Yup, just a pro-abortion, anti-gun, NYC liberal. Just like Hillary!

I love Cruz, but I'm not going to try to destroy Trump. Trump is leading for a reason.
Yeah, I know. I love Cruz, but if he doesn't make it and Trump does, I'll support Trump in the general.
I love Cruz. But if Trump wins the nomination, I will not sit it out. I will support him.
Thanks to you he is now exposed as ---Now, it's just the big money, New York bank website. Cult of personality is right.---
“He went to Washington and did exactly what he said he was going to do,” Perry said.”
Two things, VOTES, that Cruz and Rubio both did that they never remind the voters they did was to vote for TPA and the Corker bill.
Both votes can/will cripple the United States. Both votes are infinitely more important to the future of the country than an off-the-cuff comment may by a businessman 20 years ago.
“RUSH: Uhhhh, I’m just not feeling this, folks. In the first place, people are not dying on the street.”
Rush has turned out to be a fork-tongued liar. Trump was referring to what will NOT happen as a result of the implementation of his health care plan after he gets in office.
Rush alluded to that possibility of meaning, and so he could say that he did in fact mention if he was called out, but then jumped back onto his original diatribe about how there are no people dying in the streets today.
All in all, I was astonished at the deceptions put forward by Rush Limbaugh all week, and especially Friday. Talent on loan from whom?
Thanks for that. Cruz is the NYC money bagman. You don’t want to see it because he is devoTED or just plain ol’ Pious Ted. Let the scales drop from your eyes there, junior.
“As previously stated, I do believe owner of this website, Jim Robinson, is supportive of the Trump candidacy.”
You don’t have to relegate it to the level of “belief”. He has stated he supports Trump’s candidacy.
