Francis responded to a reporter's question about Trump's immigration policy being in conflict with the gospel by saying, "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the gospel."
The pope's immigration jab came shortly after he prayed along the southern border for those who died trying to enter the U.S. illegally.
Trump, a Presbyterian, called the comment "disgraceful" and said the pope apparently is not aware of crime linked with illegal immigration.
"If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS ... I can promise you that the pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president because this would not have happened," the billionaire told Fox News.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a Catholic, agreed with Trump.
"I think the Holy Father recognizes, or should recognize (and I believe he does), how generous America is. We accept close to one million [people] every year as permanent residents of the United States. No other country in the world even comes close," Rubio told CNN's Jake Tapper. "There's a balance here between compassionate, but also being responsible, especially in a world where radical jihadists are seeking to use the immigration laws of countries to infiltrate killers and fighters into foreign countries."
The pope's comments even managed to bring former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, also a Catholic, to Trump's defense. Bush told reporters in South Carolina that he supported "walls and fencing where it's appropriate," and did not think it was wise to listen to Francis on "economic or environmental policy," the Associated Press reported.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz opted "not to get in the middle" of any altercation between Francis and Trump.
"That's between Donald and the pope," Cruz told reporters.

Is this satire ? If not, Cruz just proved himself unwilling to defend US borders against illegal entry.
What a weasel. Cruz's own site says, BUILD A WALL, Cruz has said in at least two or three debates that he would build a wall.
"Not get in the middle"? He SHOULD say, "Your Holiness, I think you mean ME, too, and not just Trump. Not fair to single out Trump when I say the same thing."
Of course, the POPE knows, as we all do, that Cruz has no intention of building a wall. It's pandering, because his donors don't want a wall or any restrictions at the borders.
Cruz declined to defend the US border.
Why the heck should Cruz stick up for the Donald. If it was the other way around the Donald would say good for the Pope and see this proves nobody likes him.
The tRumpster pretends he’s a tough guy he should be able to handle this all by himself. Maybe he can sue the Pope.
The Mexican government has no fear of Cruz at all. Very telling.
And a socialist pope is no pope at all.
BUT Cruz has been saying the SAME THING. "Build a wall"---on his website, in some of the debates also.
Shouldn't Cruz man up and DEFEND Trump and say, "Don't just single out Trump; I will build a wall, too."
Of course it would be good for Ted not to call attention to yet another campaign promise which he and the Republicans have NO INTENTION of fulfilling. (We will repeal Obamacare! We will stop secret Obamatrade deals! We will secure the border! We will reduce the deficit! We will reduce the budget!
What liars.
I am pretty sure that Donald Trump and Pope Francis are twins separated at birth. Neither one knows how to shut up, both are addicted to attention, and neither has any filter whatever.
You have concurred that Cruz is not really a natural born American citizen, being unwilling to defend the USA because Donald Trump is defending the USA and decisively leading Cruz in the Republican Presidential primaries. Rafael Cruz is just another politician, albeit a bit lower now than Marco Rubio and Jeb Bus who had the sense or backbone to say something in defense of our borders, Trump notwithstanding.
I've always enjoyed your posts but not this one.
Do you know Trump personally? Have you known him for a long time? Somehow you know who is and who is not a good Christian?
So is Cruz renouncing his promise that appears on his website under “Immigration”, “I will build a wall.” This also is something he’s said in debates recently. (Admittedly they were said in Rubio’s mealy mouthed, weaselly way, kinda like, “Will you bring back waterboarding?” to which Cruz gave a rambling, lawyerly answer that was a non-answer, and very Clintonesque.)
Trump’s a cultural Christian. So’s the present Pope, apparently.
Nutball pope steps in it again. They gotta get this guy to stay home or he won’t have any Catholics to rescue from abuse.
ugh.
I don’t know what is in the man’s heart. God knows, I don’t.
“I am seeing Catholics on FB questioning their faith over this pope.
That makes me sad.”
Oh, I am not questioning MY faith. I am questioning HIS.
Cruz is just letting the all powerful Oz Trump handle things for himself. If the Don wants to be president he’s going to have to learn that not everybody is going to kiss his behind.
I’m sure if the Pope had said the same thing about Cruz, the Don and all his supporters wouldn’t have stuck up for him. In fact I’ve seen tRump supporters call Cruz a fake christian in many threads.
You would have been one of the first ones posting “See even the Pope knows Cruz is a “fake”.
It’s not always easy to read where people are. A lot of Christians are a lot less than they could be in principle. And it will probably take a revival to really change this situation.
“It looks like the pope singled out Trump as the only one being consistent on building the wall. Yep, you other guys are, if nothing else, wishy washy on the wall and “illegal immigration.”
God catch!
