Donald Trump's visit to the Iowa State Fair was a spectacle...
Rob Stutzman...witnessed the scene and experienced flashbacks to the hordes his client, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, encountered during his unlikely bid for California governor during the 2003 recall election.
"It's celebrity appeal," Stutzman said.
"Both of them are very skilled at using their celebrity to attract public and media attention,"
They are wealthy celebrities, so universally branded that they are known by their first names.
Schwarzenegger and Trump have a flair for theatrics that play well on the evening news. Some examples: Schwarzenegger dropped a 3,600-pound wrecking ball on an Oldsmobile Cutlass to protest the tripling of a state car tax. Trump offered children free rides on a helicopter emblazoned with his last name at the Iowa fair.
The two are confident, unabashed and self-promotional.
"I knew I was a winner, I knew I was destined for great things," Schwarzenegger wrote in a 1977 biography.
"Sorry losers and haters, but my IQ is one of the highest - and you all know it! Please don't feel so stupid or insecure, it's not your fault," Trump tweeted in 2013.
Both tapped a vein of discontent among disaffected voters...
Both also displayed an immunity to controversy that would have felled other politicians.
Trump, who is now espousing traditional conservative views on issues such as abortion, was once a registered Democrat. Schwarzenegger became a Republican upon his arrival in the country in 1968...
Still, conservative Republicans were skeptical of Schwarzenegger because of his liberal views on social issues such as abortion.
"The hurdle an Arnold Schwarzenegger had to clear or a Donald Trump has to clear is the jump from being a lightning rod for totally disaffected voters to being taken seriously," Sragow said, and that's "one that is not easy to make."

Here we go again. Yawn
In the end, as the curtain comes down on Saint Ted all his supporters have left is an occasional clever remark that lingers like a fart until the Trump Express Train roars by and blows it away.
The Cruz spin is getting pretty thick.
Just saying.. Cruz was born overseas. Trump is 100% American.
Finally, someone to make sense of it all...
LOL
Well OK. Canada isn’t overseas exactly.
:)
Welcome to FreeRepublic, wise choice of words.
Thanks.
:)
That’s all it takes to get your vote? Why not go for Hillary or Bernie then?
Cruz is a natural-born citizen who loves the Judeo-Christian values this country was founded on, values Trump appears to have little personal acquaintance with.
Oh wow. Another Trump campaign operative.
“Finally, someone to make sense of it all...”
Now my life has meaning......
Actually, that post was exactly on the money.
History and logic will not sway the cult of Trump.
I’m not bashing Cruz, just offering balance to the original post.
Cruz is second best in the race.
:)
And you think Trump won’t kill the national GOP? Even if he wins the election, the GOP could lose the Senate at the same time. Trump’s supported Democrats in Congress as much if not more than he has Republicans. He bashes the GOP establishment so much and is on record praising Hillary, Pelosi, Reid, Schumer that his supporters may end up voting in a Democrat Senate, who I’m sure Trump will enjoy “working with.”
One of the older ladies in my prayer group made this very comparison a few months back. She worked for Arnold in his recall campaign, was very enthusiastic ... and then felt very disappointed, even betrayed, when his actions in office were not what his supporters had been led to expect.
I’d have done the same, if I’d lived in California at the time. I remember Gray Davis from when was insurance commissioner, and he was an incompetent creep.
The article forgot to mention how Arnold bragged in his campaign about how he was too rich to be bribed or bought off. Sound familiar?
That doesn’t stop one from following one’s own big city urban elite liberal tendencies.
