Ted Cruz has inched ahead of Donald Trump in a new national poll released Wednesday.
The Texas senator has the backing of 28% of Republican voters nationwide, unseating Trump, who won the support of 26% in the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. But Cruz's 2-point edge is within the poll's margin of error.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio comes in third with 17% support, followed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 11%, Ben Carson at 10% and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in last place with 4%.
The results are a major change from last month's NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, when Trump held a 13-point lead over Cruz, 33% to 20%.
The latest survey was conducted by Republican pollster Bill McInturff and Democratic pollster Peter Hart after Saturday's GOP debate in South Carolina....

In all these years, how do we treat small polls here?
It doesn’t matter who it is for.
8 people per state is not a poll, it is a headline. I don’t care if it says Trump or Cruz has 10% or 2%, as it is designed to draw attention or push a narrative, and you know it as well as I do.
Not fair maybe but it would be fun.
Polls? Who’s talking polls? Oh, yeah, Trumpers for the most part.
I’m way beyond polls now.
And there is a statistical reason for that ...
Cruz needs to take the gloves off and not let up til he’s curled up on the floor.
The beauty of Trump is he cannot control his emotions and must react to everything that’s said.
This article is about a poll, in case you forgot. But staying on topic is difficult without throwing in a bunch of childish snark on your part.
You decry the actions of others (because you disagree with them) while participating in the exact same behavior you complain about.
It’s a good bet that the GOPe’s overall game plan is to create plausible deniability so they can commit electronic election fraud on Super Tuesday, stealing votes from Trump to distribute them accordingly. I’ve read from several different sources that once the electronic votes are cast, there is absolutely no way to do a recount. And no judge would make a ruling for that many states to have new elections using paper. So if Trump doesn’t take pre-emptive legal action to prevent this, there is nothing to stop election theft. Or at least I can’t find anyone who has a backup plan for the morning of March 2nd if we wake up and discover the primary had just been stolen. (And don’t forget about the new RNC rule that a candidate must win 8 states outright, not 6.)
If we start seeing poll “surges” or “shifts,” then we should suspect a situation where the stage is being set for election fraud. It would give them cover if a race appears to be closer than it actually is (as it may have been in Iowa.)
As others here have already said, their ideal long-term scenario (short of Jeb making the Mother-of-all-Surges) is if they can knock off Trump (by whatever means necessary), then they can easily handle anyone else. If Cruz is the nominee, they’ll go after his Canadian status through the new liberal Supreme Court (McConnell WILL cave. Even if he doesn’t, what will happen with a 4/4 tie on this?)
With Cruz taken out through the SC, here comes Jeb or Romney on a white horse to save the day. Of course a RINO like those 2 idiots will lose again, but the RNC folks just don’t care. Globalization of our country is now more important than winning the election, unfortunately.
As for Rubio, isn’t his birth status the same as Cruz? If so, he would be taken out via lawsuits along with Cruz. He’s expendable as long as Kasich, Bush, Romney et al are there to step up and “save the country.”
Little Johnnie probably pays union dues.
If Trump spends his own money, goes through all this irritation, then works his butt off for years to fix this country economically, there is NO way he would pick someone who would undo all of his hard work. His motivations for this presidential run are many, but top on his list is love of country and saving a country for his grandkids.
I dunno. It just seems like I don't see too many fiscal conservatives who are social liberals. And picking a fiscal conservative as a SC appointee -- someone who would safeguard his legacy -- would be his top priority.
Stop telling me what I do.
I know what I do.
I’m right here.
I would like to congratulate the Cruz supporters for this certain victory in South Carolina in three days.

Wall St Journal & NBC News hate Trump...this poll is bogus.
Perish the thought.
But Cruz has his vaunted Ground Game in SC. And there are more evangelicals there. By ANY measure Cruz should do better in SC than in a national poll that includes NY (for example).
Try to think it through.
They let Democrats vote Saturday in SC.
So it doesn’t matter.

Good old sundance.
Now in its 20th year, the Republican polling firm offers only a limited sample of its victories on its walls, but its influence is nonetheless clear.
"Those push-button polls can do a good job of telling you who's ahead and who's behind," Newhouse said during an interview at the firm's office. "But what
