Trump’s threats to legally challenge Cruz’s eligibility for office are, “not defending a constitutional principle, just emotionally lashing out,” as Professor Jacobson has puts it.
Monday, Trump suggested Republicans ought to be thankful he’s willing to take on Cruz’s eligibility. Why? Because Democrats will do so if Cruz is the Republican nominee. Trump also referenced two pending cases on the matter, both filed by other parties.
But is Trump pursuing the Cruz/birthright issue because Cruz keeps running attack ads or because he’s doing everyone a favor? Trump himself doesn’t seem to know. And what about Marco Rubio? Will Trump go birther on Rubio once if he becomes a competitive contender?
The perpetual birther, Trump caused a stink around the 2012 election when he repeatedly demanded to see President Obama’s birth certificate.
For Professor Jacobson’s full breakdown on the eligibility issue, see here.
Trump said the Republican Party was “in default” of an agreement and then whined on about being treated unfairly.
The Hill reports:
“When somebody’s in default, that means the other side can do what they have to do,” he said. “The RNC is in default.”
Trump signed a pledge last year to run as a Republican and not as an independent. He first raised the posibility of a third-party run in an exclusive interview with The Hill last summer.âI signed a pledge but itâs a double-edge pledge, and as far as Iâm concerned theyâre in default of the pledge,â he said at a campaign event outside of Charleston, S.C., The Guardian reported.
During a later press conference, Trump said he was disappointed with the RNC because it stacks the room at debates “with special interests and donors.”
“The RNC gave all the tickets to special interests that represented Cruz and Rubio. They had all the tickets,” he said. “They walked on the stage and the place went crazy.”
He said he doesn’t have donors or special interests.
“I think the RNC did a very poor job,” he said. “We’ve warned them…and they don’t listen.”
The RNC has “total control” over Trump’s competitors, he added.
“The bottom line is the RNC is controlled by the establishment and the RNC is controlled by the special interests and the donors and that’s too bad,” he said.
Threats aplenty and approximately zero action. At least we know what a (God help us) Trump presidency would look like.
Wow, There’s two of us. I won’t vote for Trump either. My husband despises him also.
Cruz can go to a court and get a declaratory judgement that he is indeed able to run. Of course, he risks being told he is ineligible if he does so.
Trump’s strategy in this is brilliant, IMO.
Like the press Trump is dealing with now isn’t “truly adversarial now? Please...

Why should he?
To keep the RATs from screwing him & the country via lawsuits if he is the nominee.
How very thoughtful of you to be concerned about your man's opponent.
And a good morning to you too Pilgrim. Every time I see your name Pilgrim,,,,,I think of John Wayne.
Yep, ‘figgered you wus one of them youngens’!!!
LOL!!
Listened a couple of times since posting. :)
His position on amnesty, for one. Add on there: Ben Carson, and many others.
Then you must think he is eligible
I never said he wasn’t eligible. I honestly don’t know if he is, especially since he had dual citizenship till just a year & a half or so ago. He wasn’t born on a military base like McLame was.
I DO know that if the RATs can use the issue to screw Hillary into office they will. If you can completely take that off the table it seems worth doing to me .
If you are lawyer that practices in this system then I will defer to you on this point, as I am not. As I understand, the courts don’t hand out this kind of opions on request, they hear suits brought by plaintiffs. Mr. Trump could file one as he has threatened. He certainly has standing.
Everyone here at FR chastised me for "selling out" or even worse names were flung at me, for going along with the GOP program, for not "sitting this one out" and not "standing up for principle!
This time, that's the advice I'm following.
If my guy, Cruz doesn't win the primary, NOT only will I not "hold my nose and vote" for whom the punditry tell me the winner will be, I also will NOT work to get him elected, I WILL work to defeat him!
The guy's scum and a charlatan who will become another "narcissist-in-chief bully" and I can't bear the thought that I held my nose (for the good of the party) and voted for someone so harmful to American liberty and exceptionalism!
No matter what he says, he is only out for one person - himself and one never knows who he'll be naming to the Supreme Court or selling us out to tomorrow for one of his "great deals!"
I don’t think Cruz has lied about amnesty. I’ve listened to Rubio make the claim, and I’ve also heard Jeff Sessions refute Rubio’s claim point blank. Also Cruz voted with Sessions against the bill. Rubio voted for it. That’s clear enough for me.
Now Trump’s position on amnesty? I have no idea what he wants to do considering he said this two and a half years ago: https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/373145053482319872
And this just 7 months ago which was after he announced his run for President: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Vs2BxqhQ8Q
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if under a Trump presidency part of his ‘deal’ to pass immigration reform was to negotiate with Schumer and the Dems on a pathway to citizenship. Especially when Trump says this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wdlyykIs3I
As for the Carson/Iowa ‘lie’, I read the multiple CNN tweets, and I thought it sounded like he could be dropping out too.
I also read the tweets from Steve King, who Sarah Palin went out of her way to bash, and his tweets were so benign in their characterization of the Carson CNN story that, IMO, it’s laughable to call him somehow ‘underhanded’ and ‘deceitful’.
I like Carson, he seems like a decent guy, but up til this point he’s run one of the most incompetent campaigns I’ve seen.
How is it that Carson himself gets no blame when his own people apparently released an ambiguous statement about the immediate future of his campaign DURING the voting in Iowa? The news tweets didn’t sound that much different than Christie’s the day before Christie dropped out. I for one thought after reading the CNN tweets that it was entirely reasonable to think Carson would be dropping out, likely even.
Another thing, Iowa was a caucus, if people showed up to the caucus sites chances are they were the more politically savvy amongst the populace. I can almost guarantee that most of the people at their caucus sites had their own phones with them. After the CNN Carson story was reported, anyone who was following the campaign probably immediately saw the news anyway. To call Cruz himself a liar because his people reiterated what seemed to be obvious is ridiculous, IMO.
The Cruz press release that I saw about it didn’t even state that Carson was dropping out with certainty. It merely said something like, ‘the press is reporting Carson is taking time off after Iowa’, and judging by the multiple press reports it DID look like that was the case. Steve King’s tweets were even more benign than that. He stated merely, ‘it looks like Carson is out’ which is what it DID look like. Sarah Palin really went off the rails insulting King over this, IMO.
