Tragedy and Choices: After Scalia, the Case for Cruz (Sowell reverses course)
American Spectator ^ | 2.15.16 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 02/15/2016 7:49:03 PM PST by SoConPubbie

Amid the petty bickering, loud rhetoric and sordid attack ads in this year's primary election campaigns, the death of a giant - Justice Antonin Scalia - suddenly overshadows all of that.

The vacancy created on the Supreme Court makes painfully clear the huge stakes involved when we choose a President of the United States, just one of whose many powers is the power to nominate justices of the Supreme Court.

Justice Scalia's passing would be a great loss at any time. But at this crucial juncture in the history of the nation - with 5-to-4 Supreme Court decisions determining what kind of country America will be - Scalia's death can be catastrophic in its consequences, depending on who is chosen to be his successor.

Given the advanced ages of other justices, the next president is likely to have enough vacancies to fill to be able to shape the future of the court that helps shape the future of America.

Already many people are complaining that the America they grew up in, and loved, is being changed into something they can barely recognize. Record numbers are renouncing their American citizenship.

Meanwhile, people with high level experience in the military and in the intelligence services are warning us against extreme dangers in a world where our adversaries' military power and aggressiveness are increasing,

. . . . .

Senator Ted Cruz has been criticized in this column before, and will undoubtedly be criticized here again. But we can only make our choices among those actually available, and Senator Cruz is the one who comes to mind when depth and steadfastness come to mind.

As someone who once clerked for a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, he will know how important choosing Justice Scalia's replacement will be. And he has the intellect to understand much more.

Actually he is not. There are a couple of Freepers in close running, though.

“A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice.” - Thomas Paine 1792

“It does not take a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.” - Samuel Adams

Worth repeating!

Personally, I’d like to see Trump nominate Cruz for the court. Very seriously.

Laughable chart. If Trump is so disliked, why did he tie in Iowa and win NH by more than a 2-1 margin in an open primary? Both Huckabee and Fiorina scored higher than Trump and they are now out of the race.

So what does that tell you about the relevancy of that chart?

Everything matters in who will pick the next Supreme Court replacement justices!

It simply cannot be the clown prince Trump!

He is like the perverbial weather vane: just about the time you think he believes this, he changes and declares he believes that and has for years! Someone proclaimed, he's like jello, you just can't pin him down!

Well, I want someone one I can count on to pick judges, not jello guy!

Trump supporters are very much like those who supported Obama, especially in '08.

If you asked them the reasons for their loyal support when he hadn't done anything, they'd utter that they thought he would do such and such. Even today, they can't admit they made a mistake, they merely blame "the system, Republicans, the problems with the economy were bigger than even Obama thought.........!

Hindsight is 20/20, but you’re proving particularly myopic when it comes to foresight.

The math is really not that difficult. First thing different here is total dislike is combination of dems, repubs, indies.

Second thing is, in a primary you could have, for example, a candidate who was disliked by two-thirds of the electorate and he could still take win a plurality of votes.

Apparently you don’t understand how pluralities work. You can win a plurality and never be able to pick a single vote outside your cult like following.

That’s why Trump loses in the head to heads against Hillary and Cruz wins. I’d explain it firyher, but something tells me you won’t get it.

Actually your argument would work against Cruz in the general election. You are not going to win a general election with evangelists alone.

Sigh. Why do people make this assumption? Why does Cruz win in the head to heads? Just because he only pulls evangelists? Obviously, not.

You completely fail to realize the STAGGERING number of people who will NEVER vote for Trump. For example, I, my wife, my parents, my sister and her husband, my best friend, and about a half-dozen of my closest friends - all of whom are solid conservatives - will NEVER vote for Trump. (Incidentally, there is only ONE evangelical in the bunch.)

If the primary goes to Trump vs Cruz ONLY, Cruz wins. Then Cruz beats Hillary based on current polls, which will only get better once all the infighting goes away.

Your right about that. My family including kids and their spouses make 8 right here that will never vote Trump...then extend that to x10 for others they know. OH, I could add more myself with those in my Church, but there isn’t enough space in this little box.

I don’t care. Trump has to get the nominee first and then well worry about the General. You see Trump is ten steps ahead of everybody. He is already working on beating Hillary with her Iraq vote.....she is screwed because she didn’t think that would be an issue with Republicans but.......we have the great Donald Trump who will use that daily and even more daily. The liberals already hate Hillary for so many things so they will stay home. Trump will gather the Reagan voters and win the general. People are PISSED OFF and the Cruz games aren’t working this time.

That would be Jesus, and his followers. Maybe us Constitution lovers come in right after that. Wait a minute that would put me in two groups. Cruz appears to me to be Catholic.. Making the sign of the cross at the debate. I am not sure how I feel about that... But he checks more Constitutional boxes than anyone else. Let me clarify, his record checks more constitutional boxes. We admonished the country for not looking at Obamas record, now we must heed our own advice.
I mistakenly supported trump for a couple of weeks, but then I remembered 2000.. He checks the anti-constitutional boxes.

Actually I don't care who ends up winning the nomination, so long as it's not a GOPe candidate again. Right now, all the momentum favors Trump but if Cruz is suddenly able to appeal to a wider group of people, I would enthusiastically support him as well.

Right now Cruz's support seems narrow and if many of his supporters here are any indication (I'm not including you in that mix), they don't seem like very nice people.

I’ll admit: I’ve become not-very-nice as of late. I sat back for quite some time and watched the Trumpettes tear my beloved forum up with asymmetric warfare. Finally, I had enough and starting firing back.
