No Outrage
Weekly Standard ^ | February 15, 2016 | Bill Kristol

Donald Trump, the leading candidate for the Republican nomination for president, claims in Saturday night's debate that the most recent Republican president, George W. Bush, knowingly and purposefully lied us into war in Iraq.

President Bush's brother, Jeb Bush, briefly defends his brother the president but quickly turns his defense into a complaint that he's tired of Donald Trump criticizing his mother and his family. Jeb is apparently too wounded to be outraged.

George W. Bush shows up to campaign for his brother two days later in South Carolina and chooses not to directly address the charge. George W. Bush is apparently too post-presidential to be outraged.

Dick Cheney is asked about Trump's comment on Fox, and explains the Bush administration had the same intelligence as others around the world. Asked if he could support Trump were Trump to win the nomination, Cheney reiterates that he's always said he would support the Republican nominee. Cheney is apparently too loyal a Republican to be outraged.

If George W. Bush and Dick Cheney - and Colin Powell and Condi Rice and all the others accused by Donald Trump of lying us into war - aren't going to be outraged, others aren't going to be outraged on their behalf. So John Kasich decides it would hurt his image as a positive unifier if he were to be outraged. So Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, who had moments of authentic outrage Saturday night, go back to sniping at each other rather than sustaining their outrage.

Once upon a time we had leaders who would have expressed their outrage at such a slander. They would have demanded evidence from Trump to back up his charge. Receiving none, they would have denounced and excoriated him. They would have explained to the American people how extraordinarily irresponsible his slander was, and would have done their best to discredit a man who could behave so irresponsibly. They would have pronounced him unfit to be president of the United States, and they would have mobilized their friends, supporters and admirers to ensure so appalling an eventuality didn't come to pass. They would have been scorned by some for doing so, and they would have worn that scorn as a badge of honor.

We apparently no longer live in such a time.

I guarantee you Billy Crystal has never called out W for not defending himself over Iraq or for failing to act on the pre 9/11 intel he had that Al Qaeda was going to hit the homeland. But when a convenient club to hit Trump with is available look at all the vermin like Kristol who come out of the woodwork “defending” W. Hilarious.

And somehow got Clinton to establish the exact same policy three years earlier. Your charges are patently false.

I do not want to be indelicate with the ignorant. We are all God’s children and as such are Brothers and Sisters.
The invasion of Iraq was the greatest error ever committed in US history by a US president. I know you agree with that. But you and I disagree on if it was intentionally done with contrary facts available. I personally believe that it was done with intent to deceive. I believe that from available facts including the UN inspectors on the ground when we bombed, and the absolute fact that Iraq had ZERO to do with the killing of 3000 Americans on our land that Bush lied and people died. GO TRUMP!!

Well not only does "Give them hell Trumpy talk with forked tongue, he also doesn't seem to want a real fight:

Though he previously depicted Bush’s actions as deliberate, on Sunday morning he distanced himself from those statements. On NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump backed away from his past impeachment calls, saying, “It may not have been impeachable because it was a mistake.”

George W. Bush ...chooses not to directly address the charge. George W. Bush is apparently too post-presidential to be outraged.

Bush didn't even address the charge WHEN he was President. He completely forfeited the narrative, choosing to remain "above it all." Why? Probably because he knew damn well that Saddam's bio-chem weapons were transported to Syria in the run-up to the war when he was attempting to put together a coalition. If he admitted the truth, he'd have essentially been admitting that because of his decision to invade Iraq, Saddam's WMDs were now in much more dangerous hands (Syria/Hezbollah), a few miles from Israel's border. NOT an option. So he kept his mouth shut and played the fool.

I am no Bill Kristol fan, but his point is valid. I believe we should still seek to elect men who reflect our great leaders, such as Washington, Lincoln, and Reagan. Trump is a repudiation of those leaders. He is little more than a carnival showman. There is not a single "conservative" promise he will keep. He will not stop, or even slow, immigration. He will not nominate conservatives to the Supreme Court. He will not stop the runup of national debt. He will not be a strong and wise steward for foreign policies.

He is a blowhard, and a weak man, as is clear by his insults and his threats (and actual lawsuits) against anyone who disagrees with or criticizes him.

Even if all you say about Trump is true (and let’s say it is for the sake of argument), Trump can still be right about certain issues.

There is no reason people cannot have different views and express them, especially about events such as the Iraq invasion. These things need to be discussed and Trump is bringing them to the fore. Even if you hate, hate, hate Trump (as Kristol does) you have to give him some credit for saying things that other people wish they had the guts to say.

Maybe they aren’t outraged because it’s pretty close to the truth. Remember in lives of others, the Stasi man was teaching students about interrogation. Had that classic line explaining that innocent suspects become enraged.
Nobody here is enraged.

Exactly.

That’s what I always wind up thinking about.

All this hoopla about Trump, and very little objection to Obama at all.

Heck, McCain said we had nothing to fear from an Obama administration, effectively endorsing the guy.

Now they’re apoplectic?

A known follower of the worst people in our nation, and no problem. A known supporter of America First, now there’s a massive problem.

I am so sick of these quislings.

........my preference is Ted, I like GWB as a man and patriot but TRUMP nailed it on the Iraq WAR. A. It shouldn’t have ever happened because Hussein, as bad as he was was a necessary EVIL to keep these Jihadi’s intimidated enough to behave themselves and keep Iran at bay.

And B., like Amnesty, Trump does us all a favor by having the balls to state publicly what needs to be stated and owned. Namely, the Iraq War was mishandled and several thousand of our guys, and some gals, got killed because it was mis-handled. That’s an indisputable fact.

In the interest of candor and fairness, I must and do confess that I once supported GWB on the Iraq War. I freely admit my error!
