Who Is Sri Srinivasan? Indian-American Judge In Race To Replace Justice Antonin Scalia
International Business Times ^ | February 14, 2015 | Sneha Shankar

Speculations were ongoing Sunday to find out who U.S. President Barack Obama will nominate to replace Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia after he passed away unexpectedly on Saturday. Speculations in local media listed out several possible nominees for the post, but most cited a report from 2013 to suggest that Sri Srinivasan, a former senior Justice Department official for whom Obama had fought to confirm a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia, could be appointed to the post.

Srinivasan, 48, was born in the northern Indian city of Chandigarh while his father belonged to the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. His family migrated to Kansas in the 1960s, where he grew up. He went on to earn degrees from Stanford in college, law school, and business school, the New Yorker said in a report in 2013, citing Srinivasan as “the Obama Administration’s principal deputy solicitor general.”

Srinivasan was also a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who was a 1981 appointee by Republican President Ronald Reagan and is now retired. After his clerkships, Srinivasan served as a corporate litigator at O’Melveny & Myers and then worked in the office of the U.S. Solicitor General from 2002 to 2007.

This is a choice that most unnerves me. I’m hoping that Obama goes overboard and chooses someone so vile, the public turns against him or her, like Goodwin Lui, for example. Srivinasan doesn’t seem like an inflammatory choice.

Who Is Sri Srinivasan?

He was the litigator, who represented the country in the Windsor v. United States case, argued that the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional given its limitations on same-sex couples.

THAT TELLS ME EVERYTHING I NEED TO KNOW.

If the Senate approves of any 0bama appointee to the Supreme Court, the Republican Party is finished.

He’s gonna pick a black female. That way he can beat the GOP over the head all summer for being racist and sexist.

Either they’ll eventually cave or it will be used as a rallying point to get the Obama base voter back out to the polls.

RE: Nobody born and raised in a Socialist country should even be considered.

I don’t think India is a socialist country ( it might have been when Srinavasan was born there ). he was too small to even know the economic state of India back then.

He may not get the nomination - according to Wikipedia, he worked in the Solicitor General's office during the Bush administration, so some Obama supporters opposed Obama's nomination of Srinivasan to the DC Circuit Court. That opposition might be a lot stronger for an SC nomination.

But he did pro-bono work on behalf of Al Gore in the 2000 election recount efforts. And the fact that he was a clerk for Sandra Day O'Conner doesn't exactly recommend him either. The GOP should firmly refuse to consider him until and unless a new president nominates him.

While he was born in India, he was raised in the US (though it seems we're heading down the road to socialism at about the same speed that India is heading down the road to free-market capitalism).

Bears repeating, assuming the Republican Party isn't already quite yet finished. But Senate approval would be the Republican Party's death knell complete with a stake through their heart. If you think the base is mad now...

I have a crazy idea. What about a white, male, protestant who was born here, watched Gunsmoke as a kid, lives in the west or Midwest and attended a state university law school.

As of before he died, it was 6 Catholics and 3 Jewish people. Basically all denizens of the east coast.

My concern is that the judge revere the Constitution and always follow it in his or her rulings. One doesn’t have to be a white Protestant native-born man to do that.

This man may be a perfectly fine individual and a solid jurist. I don't know very much about him. But I do know this:

If the R's hold the line in the Senate (which I concede is questionable) Obama will have ruined this man's chance of ever getting an appointment from either party.

He'll be poisoned; damaged goods from a political point of view. That Obama would wreck a good man's future prospects for the sake of engaging the R's in a pointless battle is appalling.
