Can Republicans really block Obama’s Supreme Court nomination for a year? Probably.
Washington Post ^ | February 13, 2016 | Amber Phillips

Come January 2017, Republicans have a chance at controlling the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House.

So it stands to reason that Republicans have very little incentive to even consider President Obama's suggestion for who should replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died Saturday.

There's some historical precedent for them to do just that. A hazy rule dating back decades that congressional experts say is really more of a tradition suggests senators of the opposition party of the White House can oppose some judicial nominations in the months before a presidential election

I read on another thread that obummer can do a recess appt until he actually leaves office IF the Senate is not in session. So they need to get and stay in session PRONTO.

Don’t know what being in session entails? A lone filibuster? Minimum presence etc.?

There has always been an element of partisanship within SCOTUS. In recent years we reached and maintained an uneasy detente. Leftist judges schedule their departures to coincide with leftist administrations, and the same goes for the righties. The dhimmicrat presidents nominate leftists and the pubbies nominate moderates - and once a generation or so nominate a genius like Scalia. As I see it this detente will continue and the reason why is simple - because either we maintain the status quo or the country burns. It’s really that simple.

The left is gonna scream and shout and stomp their feet - and at the end of the day will allow the 0bongo regime to expire without replacing Scalia. The feckless pubbies will find some spinal viagra and make sure that any effort to replace him is thwarted. Sure, there will be tons of drama - how could they not? - seeing as how all politicians are drama queens. In the end they will let it go because they are scared shiiteless of the alternative - people like me, mad as hell and armed to the teeth, and looking to put notches on his stock.

I pray to God that they think clearly for a moment and recognize the implicit consequences of failing in this most important task.

Their very lives depend on making the correct choices.

answer the question, can Republicans block any Obama appointments to the Supreme Court for a year? They have to. there has never been a greater reason for a Republican majority in Congress then for this matter. They have to hold the line, at all costs. None of their careers at in Congress matter more than this issue matters. it must be impressed on all Republicans in Congress to form a common front again any Obama appointments to the Supreme Court. No Surrender no reconciliation to his wishes. it has never been so urgent.....

I have known of, and admired Sen. Ted Cruz ever since his twenty-one hour filibuster in 2013.

Could he do it again to block a vote on a hard left SCOTUS nominee?

Maybe if all the Senators had phones and pens, they could impede whatever the Boy-King wants to do. Disrespect meet disrespect.

“McConnel is being quoted as saying the Senate will not accept any Obama appointment to the court, that the next President will get to pick.”

Talk with McConnell and the Rino’S in Senate is cheap.....I won’t believe it until I see it.

They’re going to ban then confiscate. After flooding our borders with refugees and third worlders. Wonder how many gun owners voted Dem because their priest or liberal pastor told them to.

Kind of curious what the reaction is going to be if the Senate holds firm and does not approve an Obama nominee.

Will people still say there is no difference between the parties?

Will they? I have my doubts.

What about a recess appointment? Obama might do it.

Yes and don’t listen to a bunch of scare talk about a recess appointment. Mitch McConnell is not about to let Ofail appoint a SCOTUS justice.

They could if they truly wanted to. But they’re already getting into the bend over position.
