"Trump bankrolled politicians to steamroll the little guy, a pattern of sleaze stretching back decades. Worse? Trump still supports eminent domain today."
Who knew such a wonky topic would find its way into political attacks in the Republican presidential race? An ad released this week by Ted Cruz's presidential campaign lodged a renewed attack on Donald Trump's support for eminent domain and alleged use of the government's powers for private gain, to bully an elderly woman out of her home.
There are two problematic aspects of this ad: the misleading headlines that accompany the narration and the cherry-picked footage of Trump's answers that misrepresent the context of his statements. We took a look at these two elements, the context of the ad and the actual sources of the quotes and footage the ad used.
The Facts
The case
In 1994, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, a government agency, attempted to seize an elderly widow's home. The agency tried to invoke "eminent domain," which refers to the government's right to acquire private property for public use.
The house was located near the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The agency wanted to turn the house and two other properties over to the Trump Organization. Trump had planned to landscape the area and build a new parking lot, with a waiting area for limousines.
The woman, Vera Coking, was in her 70s and had lived in her home for 37 years. She refused to give it up. Then, a four-year court battle ensued.

Hoffa? Doncha know? Under the foundation of Trump Tower in Manhattan!
Why does Ted Cruz hate the Texas Rangers? LOL
Catapulting outright lies is a sign of desperation.
Cruz will say that he likes the Astros
Cruz is full of misleading things. Last night he jumped on stage at a Christian Rock concert in Greenville, said a few words, and a prayer, then left. His followers then started posting pictures of the 14,000 strong “Ted Cruz Rally.” That reeks of desperation, and is actually rather pathetic.
I’m waiting for him to start jumping up on stage at rock concerts across the country, and them claim that they were really Ted Cruz Rallies.
They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, and altogether deceitful, the Cruz Family
Yeah the Washingtom Compost is a reliable source for unbiased info. Another establishment mouthpiece that would prefer trump to Cruz.
A candidate’s attitude on eminent domain is about 1% of what I weigh when voting for a presidential nominee. The Wall and stop muslim immigration is 70% between the two.
Even if he drove the bulldozer himself I’d still vote for Trump. Non-issue.
It’s envy.
Jeb and Rubio will definitely make a play on Cruz.
Too much ground to be made up going after Trump. They need to position themselves with some 2nd place momentum going into Florida.
Now, now. It isn’t “lying.”
“It’s just wise use of words.” - Ted Cruz
You are hilarious. Did you read the article? They claim the ad is misleading because it insinuates that the woman lost her home. However, it admits the truth that Trump spent 4 years in court attempting to steal the woman’s home, but was unsuccessful. His position is clear. If a rich guy wants your property, it’s OK and right for the government to take it from you and give to the rich guy.
Jebber brought this canard out in the last debate..
Heh, I was wondering how many posts in the thread would be before someone trotted out the old “the mainstream press LOVES Donald Trump” nonsense.
Do you read? Trump offered the old woman a MILLION $ for her shack...she refused. The built around the thing. The city finally paid her half that and bulldozed the mess. She was a fool and Trump tried to make her rich.
Going after Trump does not work. They are afraid of him. Ted is easy pickings.
My only concern with Cruz is his promise to turn federal land to the states. States, like Nevada, that don’t have the budget resources to maintain the land for the people. I’d hate to see myself and thousands of hunters & fishers fenced out. Land sold to the highest bidder would be tragic.
They should love him. He’s awesome.
Cruz is no stranger when it comes to benefitting from eminent domain.
He promised to stand with TX citizens against eminent domain when a foreign company wanted to build a pipeline. It was to transport tar sands oil to be refined at two Texas refineries and sold overseas to increase foreign profits. He didn’t stand up for the citizens.
Ted also supports eminent domain for the Keystone Pipeline that a private company is building. Oil is subsidized and has been for years. Cruz has at least $365,000 in oil/gas company investments and at least $50,000 of that is in Plains GP Holdings, a company that transports oil and gas liquids.
And he stands to make money on Keystone. He’s received $25 million in oil super pac money and over $952,000 in oil campaign contributions.
