When did Freepers turn so nasty? (vanity)
vanity | 2/12/2016 | Optimist

Posted on 02/12/2016 10:04:27 PM PST by Optimist

Over the past several months, Free Republic has begun to show an ugly side of its members. Although admittedly comprised of many strong-willed, opinion-charged individuals presenting thoughtful, conservative insights into the topics of the day, this forum has begun to show a seamier side as the Trump-Cruz-Rubio-Carson 2016 Primary heated up. You all know what I mean. Many of you have either been at the giving or receiving end of EMOTIONALLY-charged attacks against various candidates or even individuals as their supporters.

Herewith a few thoughts I would like to share:

  1. Passion for a candidate and buying into the campaign is exciting and important for exposing others to knowledge and understanding more about "your" candidate.
  2. Most of us WILL NOT be able to have a voting impact on which individual becomes the candidate, so why such vitriol? A little perspective is really needed. What are you going to do if by mid-March (when only 20% of the country has had any type of primary vote) and your candidate has fallen off the slate? Face it ANY of these candidates are better than any Democrat or potential Independent opposition, and will have a better chance of being elected than nay 3rd/4th/obscure party candidate.
  3. When did we turn into the Ron Paul group? Sorry, I don't mean to offend, but you know what I mean: personality driven, my guy can do/say no wrong, I'm going to get in your face if you don't see things my way, and .... well, you hopefully see the similarity.
  4. None of the candidates is 100% perfect, but they all have characteristics that are admirable:
  5. Yes there are negatives for all of them, but this is THE BEST crop of candidates we have ever had to choose from, unlike past elections when it seemed inevitable that the hand-picked, it's-his-turn, establishment candidate was chosen for us. And, besides, go back and re-read number 2.
  6. And (finally?) a word about pundits: (Glenn Beck, Rush, Fox News, et. al.):

Well, this is what happens when one (Ok, I) become frustrated with the ad-hominem attacks against so many good people both on this site, and otherwise supportive of conservatism and the rise of a conservative Republican Party. We are all decent, America-loving conservatives who are driven to strive for what is best for returning this country to its pride.

Please Freepers, make your best case, and trust that whoever eventually runs against the Demobeast will, with God's light, be the right person for the job.

Let the flame-war begin, I have donned my suit! And God bless.

What the hell is that all about?

All manner of unspeakable behaviors are possible if you make the personal determination that God is on your side. Different strokes. I wouldn't be that prideful.

An overwhelming number of posts are emotion laden or name calling with precious little policy analysis or logic. It’s like the posters are turning FR into DU.

I love the sting of battle. I love the Trumpsters too. I can take it. I can dish it. As long as we don't "opus" we all live to fight another day. I'm glad FREEPERS care. The outcome is Gods.

There's one much funnier but I'm too chicken to post it.

Ooh please. This is nothing compared to flame wars of 96, 97 or the civil war of Clarity, CAL, Val and others.

So many are measuring their dicks and trying to prove they are the baddest badassess in the bush to assuage their inflated ego? I can buy that. FR is nothing compared to your average comments on any newspaper website where it is all out war. There are a lot of people out there invested in winning at any cost.

When did Freepers turn so nasty? Dissent from (broadly speaking) “Free Republic orthodoxy” and you’ll see the nasty side of FR instantly. Dissent is little tolerated here, and that is nasty by it’s very nature. Free Republic is anything but an open, vigorous free speech site- the zot ensures that people self-censor. But one may as well complain that gravity is keeping them down. It is what it is.

In my opinion, the "Nastiness" is relative to the degree to which Bezmenov was correct about the end result of the process of demoralization and subversion:

"According to my opinion, and the opinions of many defectors of my caliber, only about 15% of time, money, and manpower is spent on espionage as such. The other 85% is a slow process which we call either ideological subversion, active measures, or psychological warfare. What it basically means is: to change the perception of reality of every American that despite of the abundance of information no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interest of defending themselves, their families, their community, and their country.

It's a great brainwashing process which goes very slow and is divided into four basic stages.

The first stage being "demoralization".

It takes from 15 to 20 years to demoralize a nation. Why that many years? Because this is the minimum number of years required to educate one generation of students in the country of your enemy exposed to the ideology of [their] enemy. In other words, Marxism-Leninism ideology is being pumped into the soft heads of at least 3 generation of American students without being challenged or counterbalanced by the basic values of Americanism; American patriotism.

Most of the activity of the department [KGB] was to compile huge amount / volume of information, on individuals who were instrumental in creating public opinion.  Publisher, editors, journalists, uh actors, educationalists, professors of political science.  Members of parliament, representatives of business circles."
--KGB Defector Yuri Bezmenov
--Soviet Subversion of the Free Press (Ideological subversion, Destabilization, CRISIS - and the KGB)

Observe how many of the  people are unable to articulate their own definition of "Conservatism".

Thus, as Breitbart has observed, it becomes an exircise - not in Conservatism - but in Nationist Populism  (which smells alot like 1933)
"Trump won't be able to trump Cruz on conservatism. So now he's making clear that he isn't running a conservative campaign - he's running a nationalist and populist campaign. His enemies include both Republicans and conservatives"

one Lord one faith one baptism: "Donald has always been for Donald first, everything else including country second."

dforest: "YOU are the embodiment of what this OP is talking about. You seem to be unable to let it go for even one thread."

You are both correct. The Trump supporters (I support Trump and Cruz) need to admit that Trump is in it because he wants to make America great and be remembered as a great president. He has a two-fold plan to do that: 1) attack the other candidates and the media and win 2) have a plan to make America great.

If you read Trump's website he has a plan to make America great. Cruz is different in that he wants to replace corporate income taxes with VAT in that wages are non-deductible to employers. The common critique of VAT is that it gives politicians a continuously expanding pot of money. But Cruz's plan is way better than what we have now. Trump wants to restrict illegal immigration.

The crux of the difference is that Trump is skimpy on details on everything else but the making America great items. What kind of America will we have under Trump? We don't really know, but Trump will make deals and might sell off some of our values. For example Trump wants 50 state concealed carry. That is a good thing. But how it is implemented makes all the difference. Trump could make a deal allowing the FBI to review every concealed carry permit as opposed to the states and localities which do it now. I would much rather be reviewed by my local sheriff.

On item 1, getting elected, Trump has a clear advantage. He has even helped Cruz a lot by steamrolling the media and putting politically incorrect statements into the public discussion. Cruz benefitted for the most part although he had to take a stand on the Muslim immigration issue and chose not to call for a hold. Even that weasel Rubio (sorry about that Rubio fans) said he was in favor of a hold on Muslim immigration about a day or two before the Iowa primary in an attempt to siphon off some Trump votes. He took that position in a speech along with several other Trump positions.

Having Trump in the race is good for Cruz except if Trump wins. If that happens we will be rolling the dice. America will be great or at least much greater than under Obama or Bush. But we really don't know how it will look socially and what that means 20 years down the road.

Free Republic is anything but an open, vigorous free speech site- the zot ensures that people self-censor.

That is generally true, but you can go uncensored in the smoky back room or even a chat thread if you want to. If you have a reasonable history of supporting conservative positions you will not get the zot.

Spot on! I remember the first time it dawned on me and I said on a thread, “could it be that Cruz is as nasty as his supporters here?” A few days later, Trump called Cruz nasty!

Was he [Cruz] 'fighting' BEFORE Donald threw down the gauntlet?

No question Trump has injected the fight into this fight. If Trump were not in this race we would be looking at Cruz, Rubio, Bush, Gumby, Mutt and Jeff all at 15-20% each. We would end up with Mutt or Jeff.
