The Dallas Morning News on Friday endorsed Republican presidential candidate John Kasich over home-state rival Ted Cruz for the GOP nomination.
"As much as we'd like to see a Texan in the White House, we fear that Cruz's brand of politics is more about disruption than governing and threatens to take the Republican Party to a dark place," editorial members of the influential Texas newspaper wrote.
"As we've written before, continuing obstructionist paths might excite primary voters, but it won't benefit the nation or the conservative cause," they added.
Editors of the Dallas Morning News wrote that state-level public servants like Kasich "forged practical, even imaginative, ways to help their citizens lead safer, more stable and prosperous lives."
"That's a sharp contrast to what GOP presidential front-runners Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are offering," the editors wrote, referencing the candidates who won New Hampshire and Iowa, respectively.
"John Kasich of Ohio is one of those pragmatic leaders, a Republican who -- to his own present detriment, perhaps, but to the benefit of his constituents -- shows more interest in actually governing than in partisan theatrics," the newspaper added.
The Morning News editorial board praised Kasich's "get things done" bona fides in Ohio, mentioning closing a budget shortfall and overseeing a sharp drop in unemployment, as well as his efforts in Congress to balance the federal budget. They also credited his moderate positions on immigration and Medicaid.
"While other GOP establishment opponents, for instance former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, have rewritten parts of their résumés, the center-right Kasich hasn't been cowed by the farthest-right reaches of the party into doing anything of the sort," the editorial reads.
Texas holds its primary March 1.

LOL. Soon, even Cruz’s dad will endorse Trump.
They support dims. Endorsed Kasich and Shillary.
I had an opportunity to participate in a panel with part of the editorial staff. I went in thinking that I would be dealing with the conservatives I had remembered of old. I found them to be smug and sarcastic, which really surprised me.
Truth is I had quit getting the paper and just hadn't read any of their editorials in a number of years.
They used to have the best coverage of events, very in depth with true, old-fashioned journalistic reporting.
I am actually surprised they didn't endorse Hitlary.
In the General they have always supported the Republican nominee.
I'll save you trouble, I checked....

“The Dallas Morning News used to be a conservative newspaper.”
You’re right.
I lived there from late 70s to 1999. Because of the work I did, I took both the DMN and the Dallas Times Herald. Until the DTH went out of business in 91, the DMN was the conservative paper while the Times Herald was very liberal.
Once it became the only newspaper in town, the DMN no longer had to cater as much to their advertisers’ politics. This allowed the liberal ideology of its writers and editors to sweep in and eventually poison the paper’s “news” sections the way it does everything it touches.
Dear Dallas Morning News,
I would gladly exchange the governor of my state, Kasich for the governor of your state.
I stopped taking the DMN when I read their take on the Branch-Davidian Waco Reno fiasco. That was it for me. Well, that and the one time I saw two gay guys being lauded in the bridal section. It was three years after that I was on the panel. I honestly thought that maybe the editorial section was still sane. But, no way Jose.
Wrong!! The Times Herald was liberal all day long. The Dallas Morning News was absolutely conservative. When the T-H went under(because no one wanted to read that crap) the DMN went middle of the road to meet the market and disappeared down the rabbithole soon after.
How many times do you post the same thing? Obama drew big crowds. So does Bernie. I’m looking for a constitutional conservative who will reign in the federal juggernaut, not a NYC moderate who thinks the juggernaut just needs better management.
There is no God but conservatism and Ted Cruz is the prophet.
You would expect a newspaper to support local solons.
Anyone who knows what the DMN has become is not surprised by such an endorsement. I am a little surprised they did not endorse Trump but I’m certain it would be anyone except Cruz. Dallas is about as left wing as can be and has been taken over by Marxists and thugs. Glad I escaped that dingy city of filthy minded people. Looks like the only conventions they can get are the likes of sex oriented darkness, Dallas should go back to the days of success when it was run by civic minded folks, people that gave them the structure founded on God and country not the Marxist loving bastards that have torn the fabric away from a once great city. Of course, anyone with any dignity has already left that pile of crap called Dallas.
You have no idea what the hell you are talking about. You don’t know what Dallas has become. On second thought - maybe you do know and Dallas fits your pistol.
Amen. It saddens me as to what the DMN has become. Once a great newspaper has become nothing but paper to line a bird cage with or to wrap fish heads and guts in. So sad. It is only a distant memory of a once great newspaper.
