DavutoÄŸlu signals Turkish action after fall of Aleppo corridor

February 12, 2016, Friday/ 14:40:40/ TODAY'S ZAMAN | ANKARA

Prime Minister Ahmet DavutoÄŸlu has implied that Turkey will take action after the capture of the town of Azez in Syria, a strategic corridor between Aleppo and Turkey for rebel groups, by Syrian regime troops backed by Russian airstrikes.

Speaking to reporters en route to Turkey from the Netherlands, Davutoğlu said that he had told German Chancellor Angela Merkel of the need to stop Russia in Syria in order to prevent further influxes of refugees to Turkey and Europe from the region, the Hürriyet daily reported on Friday. When asked whether Turkey will take action to reopen the corridor to Aleppo, Davutoğlu said, “Wait for the next few days and you will have the answer,” daily Hürriyet reported on Friday.

An offensive by Syrian forces, Hezbollah and Shiite militias directed by Iran and backed by Russian bombing raids has reversed opposition gains on the ground and encircled rebels inside Aleppo. President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan said on Thursday that the number of refugees fleeing to Turkish border might reach 600,000 if airs strikes continue.

Davutoğlu also criticized the US for not listing the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) as a terrorist organization. He argued that the People's Protection Units (YPG), the armed wing of the PYD, supplies arms to the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). “When US Vice President Joe Biden came [to Turkey in late January], we showed him everything on a map for five hours. We shared everything about which routes are used by the YPG to carry weapons to Turkey. We expect [the US to show] sensitivity [about the issue]. We cannot see the YPG as legitimate just because it is fighting against the [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant] ISIL,” Hürriyet quoted Davutoğlu as saying.

The YPG has been a reliable ally in the fight against the ISIL on the ground and has benefited from the US arms supply on several occasions. Both the US and the EU share Turkey's view of the PKK and see it as a terrorist organization. However, under US law, the PYD is not considered a terrorist group and US officials repeatedly said that their cooperation with the PYD against ISIL will continue.

The freakout by Turkey is over the Kurds. Assad/Russia made a shrewd deal with the Kurds and gave them the entire north of Syria bordering Turkey to the Iraqi border. This serves as a buffer against Turkey for Syria and thus worth the loss of territory and at the same time the USA is working with the Kurds. Turkey is apoplectic about all this.

“Turkey will take action after the capture of the town of Azez in Syria”

Isn’t that’s always been called an invasion? Or is it ok because they are a NATO member.

The so-called cease fire brokered by some guy who fought in Nam basically divides eastern Syria to Raqqa to US control, and every thing west to Russia along the Syrian Turkish border.

So turkey will either have to cross into the Russian or the US sphere to attack the various parts under Kurd control. The US: no sweat - Russia: WW III or at least the end of the Turkish mil as a fighting force.

With US control of Raqqa, ISIS can breathe a sigh of relief and get back to business killing innocents.

Iran and their Shia militias are the big boots on the ground player here. Russia is just the air power. Yet you don’t mention Iran. Are you ashamed to support Death to America Iran?

Russia could hit Turkey from the North East. Russia did some practice to launch air attack from Caucasus region soon after they started the Syrian campaign: their cruise missile launches from ships in the Caspian Sea, and their long-range bombing mission from Russia.

They have some ground troop presence in Armenia, too.

They showed Joe Biden a map for five hours and thought that would change everything?

Hahahahahahaha!

Joe was sitting there for five hours wondering why the picture never changed on that paper TV.

Believe me, the influx of “refugees” to Europe was NOT propelled by the Syrian civil war. Or, at least, it was not at first. Those refugees running away from ISIS had plenty of room to run to elsewhere in the Middle East, and at what must be at much less risk to self and families. The civilian refugees were, in fact herded aboard these flimsy little boats, along with a contingent of sometimes already battle-hardened ISIS fighters. Launching out across the Mediterranean, and the “pruning” of Christian and Yazidi refugees, by the simple expedient of casting them overboard, in favor of the fifth column that was being exported to Europe, was a major troop movement.

Mission accomplished. Invasion force established, reinforcements arriving daily.

The Kurds are the ones cutting off Aleppo from Turkey. So you are either ignorant or a liar.

Helped by Russian warplanes, Kurds advance in northern Aleppo

Under the cover of the Russian airstrikes, Kurdish fighters affiliate with the Kurdish Democratic Union Party gained control of a number of villages and neighbourhoods north of Aleppo over the past few days, Syrian opposition sources told the Anadolu Agency yesterday. Senior opposition leader Murad Abu-Ibrahim Al-Taweel from the Syrian town of Azaz told Anadolu that the Kurdish units “exploited the involvement of the opposition in the battles with the regime and attacked its strategic bases near Azaz and controlled” a number of villages and towns. Al-Taweel reiterated that the Kurdish attacks “were covered by the daily Russian strikes on the opposition bases in Azaz,” noting that these forces turned to Menagh Military Airport, seven kilometres south, aiming to control it. “Clashes are going on currently around the airport,” he said.

>>...or at least the end of the Turkish mil as a fighting force.<<

Turkey's military is not a push over. They are several times stronger/well equipped than ISIS, Hamas, Syrian rebels combined.

Turkey entering Syria would be a really bad thing. Russians battling Turks would lead to a greatly expanded war in the middle east.

Now you are just parroting Russian propaganda. Again. There have been many, many reports of Iran/Shia backed militias fighting for Assad.

Does this guy look Kurdish to you?

I did not deny Hiz and Iran are fighting on behalf of Assad. This article is about Aleppo being cut off from the north cutting off Turkey. That is being done by the Kurds working with the Russians.

My thoughts exactly. What Turkey should do is reinforce the border to prevent a mass migration.

So it sounds like Turkey is admitting that they have been running the war in Syria all along. Wouldn’t that get them kicked out of NATO?
