After making progress in reducing homelessness among veterans, the Obama administration is turning to the larger and more complicated challenge of homelessness among families with young children.
In his 2017 budget, to be presented on Tuesday, President Obama will propose spending $11 billion over the next 10 years to fight family homelessness, a phenomenon that is closely linked to the dearth of affordable housing in New York and other big cities.
Of that amount, $8.8 billion would go to housing vouchers and $2.2 billion to more short-term assistance.
In addition to the $11 billion plan, Mr. Obama is proposing discretionary spending on 10,000 new housing vouchers; 8,000 new units for rapid rehousing; and 25,500 new units of supportive housing, or housing that is coupled with social services. That additional spending would have to be approved through an appropriations bill.

Child homelessness in U.S. at record level, report says

I’m not saying there aren’t entire homeless families out there, but when is the last time you’ve seen one?
And couldn’t we just buy each of the ones out there a house for a helluva lot less than $11 billion?
Typical liberals: create a problem so they can "solve" it.
Stupid Obama never thought about the consequences of bringing in a million refugees, not to mention allowing tens of millions of illegal latinos to flood in. Did he think that would create more housing? Stupid is as stupid does. We don't need more housing, we need fewer idiots in charge!
Because a job is out of the question.
As is a marriage to the baby daddy.
If housing costs are half of your paycheck, it means virtually no money for everything else.
Its a reality most Americans face.
$11 billion would buy a lot of houses in Detroit.
A Whole Lotta Skimming will be Going On!
If housing costs are half your paycheck, you need to move. With cheap gas, even better.
Getting more of what you subsidize...
Free or really cheap homes to have more babies at $1200 a month each? Each home will need repairs in 2 years because when you get something cheap it doesn’t last. My (disabled) son is in public housing, it “was” new 3 years ago, now it looks like a wreck, aka S#!t house. (As per him, the tenants don’t act responsible and they lack parenting skills.) Sorry if I offend, but 50+ years ago we had these problems, they were not as rampant as they are today. Our society has lost control.
Right.....my underwater mortgage is 1700 per month due to growing property taxes. I make 100k. I wanted to get out of Illinois and rent it out. So I get single non working mom’s with an obamavoucher for 1900 per month to rent it out. They live as good as I do, and do not work. I’m done with this country.
Great! He and Hillary can pay for it with their advance book royalties and speaking fees.
#1. You don’t go were these types of people live. It has to be so desperate for them. Watching their children while the parent or parents have lost the will to survive or achieve or even live.
#2. You are probably right. But it’s not about giving them the 11B, its about helping, as in I’m here from the government and I’m come to help type help. Meaning more meaningless programs, more government employees and more palms being greased than ever.
#3. Out of 11B at least 2.5b of it will end up back in the hands of Progressives, community leaders and super pacs to do whatever they want with.
0bama - why don’t you just house them in those abandoned houses in Detroit and Chicago and the Bronx (NYC) and and and.
Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States. - Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
So unconstitutional, vote-winning federal funding for homeless families is arguably stolen state revenues which the states could be using for the same purpose.
