Despite Donald Trump's victory in New Hampshire, what is the chance that Republicans will nominate Ted Cruz and that he will go on to win the presidency?
The website ElectionBettingOdds gives Cruz a 14.5 percent chance of winning the nomination -- his victory in the Iowa caucuses and what looks like a third place showing in New Hampshire notwithstanding. It puts his chances of actually winning the presidency at 4.3 percent.
But let's say Cruz beats the odds and wins the nomination. One of the most conservative members of the Senate, Cruz would test the argument made by leaders of the hard right that Republicans have lost four of the last six presidential elections because their candidates -- George H. W. Bush of 1992, Robert Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney -- were insufficiently conservative.
For more than 50 years, Phyllis Schlafly, the right-wing icon and founder of the Eagle Forum, has been a relentless proponent of the nomination of far-right candidates like Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan.
In an Oct. 7, 2015, column, Schlafly wrote:
Establishment candidates have been unable to win the popular vote in five out of the last six elections, and that outcome is not something any Republican should want to repeat.
There is an unusual degree of consensus on the intensity of Cruz's conservatism among experts in campaigns, elections and partisan polarization....

Great post Slyfox. Thank you for your observations and commentary.

That is my honest concern. I have to consider how popular this man is in the senate. He has very few allies there and while I am fine with him, others seem to believe he's singularly unlikable. Trump has not helped with this perception and used it effectively as a weapon.
However my gratitude to Trump was initially based on the fact, and yes, it's a fact, that he acted as a "flame shield" for Ted Cruz from the assaults of the leftist media. They were so focused on Trump that Cruz was able to make it this far. Trump just shrugged off attacks where I believe the left could have taken Cruz out by now.
Later, I felt I could support Trump as well. If for no other reason than a Trump/Cruz ticket could bring in Trump to break the back of the uni-party, and Ted Cruz could remain another 8 years to clean up the mess.
I still believe Cruz can make a close race and could even win the nomination, but I'm not opposed to Trump winning, build a wall and driving a stake through the heart of political correctness while the left goes nuts. That is a reality show I'd watch for 8 seasons.
But man, I hate watching people I value and respect go at each other this year, it's been really touch to read some of the flame wars.
I agree, without any snark.
Time for a photoshop of either of them smiling and holding up a picture of an aborted fetus. Gross and shocking but probably effective.
Like the bobble heads were saying the other day a fifth place finish was a win for Cruz and I did not understand how it was a win and only first was a win. As I read more about Cruz's ground game in NH and beyond the picture becomes clearer.
So to me it is still a loss but third is good for the Cruz campaign.
Senator Cruz spending his money the way I would want my President to spend mine.
This 76 year old woman and mom wouldn’t vote for the Hildabeast if she were the only candidate on the ballot. I raised my boys for 10 yrs on my own, when I left their abusive father the man came home from Nam a changed man and I was not about to let him beat any of us, I walked out and never looked back. Did it with out child support he wouldn’t pay and before all the safety net social programs we now have. I WORKED as a waitress and in a factory making a whopping $3.50 per hr. My parents did the baby sitting during the summer and school breaks.
Guess DT’s supporters didn’t read your reply. I did and would like you to put this out there as a thread possibly under vanity or general? ALso, using your three points, please give your opinion on the strengths of the candidates within those three. If you have a thread already written and we have read it, share it again here! Thanks.
Lucky for Ted...you only have one vote.
Discouraging that selling baby parts gets the video taper into legal trouble and the sellers /ghouls free reign
Ditto desert storm. Don’t need bribes from dems
You supplied NO facts to back up your opinion.
I compared and contrasted the FFs with Ted and you ignored my facts, as well as my own opinions.
The FFs were visionaries who were able to understand that human nature doesn't change, ergo, many wrote about "if this happens, that will follow"/"this shouldn't be done, because that will follow"; though they couldn't foretell the future ( things such as cell phones, the net, plane, etc., which makes the world "smaller", they took pains to warn about things that never change.
There is less than nothing at all like that re Cruz. He can't think on his feet, he can't speak extemporaneously, he doesn't understand human nature, he isn't an original thinker, and though he supposedly know Constitutional law, he changes what is so, to what favors himself...re NBC.
Hillary’s supporters can’t ALL be ancient “FEMINISTS” and that was my point, as well as your statement about birth control.
Look up the word “impugn”.
You need to read more history and how your views have or have not worked previously.
Thank you; you said in a very few words, what I attempted to say in far too many, or perhaps not enough.
