Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN)Donald Trump estimated on Tuesday that it will cost about $8 billion to build the wall he has promised to erect on the U.S.'s southern border if elected president.
Trump has vowed to force Mexico to pay for the border wall and said Tuesday on MSNBC that the hefty $8 billion price tag "is a tiny fraction of the money that we lose with Mexico" on trade.
"The wall is probably $8 billion, which is a tiny fraction of the money that we lose with Mexico. We lose a tremendous amount of trade deficits. We have a trade deficit with Mexico that is astronomical, much bigger than that. We will get -- and I say it also is also part of my plan -- Mexico is going to play for the wall," he said.
Trump's proposal to build a wall on the U.S.'s southern border and his hardline immigration policies have become central to the billionaire's presidential campaign. But Tuesday marked the first time he has tacked a specific dollar amount to his border wall proposal.
Trump said he came up with the figure by "multiplying the number of miles by a certain number."
"I'm taking price per square foot and price per square, you know, per mile, and it's a very simple calculation," Trump said, noting that he would need to erect about 1,000 miles of border wall along the 2,000-mile long border because of natural barriers along certain parts.
Trump's pledge to make Mexico pay for the wall drew harsh criticism just days earlier from former Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

Somehow, congress will never find the money to build it.
How much would you be willing to pay to watch the launch?
Hell, we can even chuck the Isis boys caught in this country over while we are at it.
What’s the point of building a wall if he’s going to expedite letting them back in?
Without a fence, migrants are sending $23 billion back to Mexico each year. Do the math.
Got to remeber that this is largely in the desert. I have seen concrete poured down here and even as it sets it cracks.
That is why I favor the pre cast done somewhere in a building that is climate controled. The sheets, or whatever they call them, cant be that wide. pre fitted with to fit with each other. Round Tounge and groove. They can be grouted after they are set.
Withdraw them from all government programs and fine all employers hiring them and they will self deport.
We can give two for one on weekends, July 4th, Veterans Day and Flag Day.
We could put in a viewing platform and charge $10 for adults and $5 for teens. Children 10 and under are free.
For the small fee of $50 a lucky citizen can be the one to pull the trigger. Free photo included.
We could turn it into a great tourist attraction!
Be the first on your block to “fly” a wetback to Mexico!
Them Mexicans are better at tunneling than the “Palestinian” sand rats.
The motion sensors are a good idea.
Buy’em in bulk under bid and use plenty of them.
One reason the CCC was able to do what it did was because they didn’t have an EPA or tree huggers to deal with.
They start to build the wall and there would be 20 years of lawsuits by every envirowhacko and border jumper lover in the country.
Congress would have to pass legislation to skirt the EPA and lawsuits.
Maybe a State of Emergency would have to be declared to get things moving.
Well, we got it all figured out!
When do we start?
As to your concens about the EPA. Not if it is declared a nation security issue by EO from the POTUS.
In that case precast makes sense.
I think 10 feet wide would be the maximum width due to the trucks that would be moving them.
Height isn’t as much an issue because you can stack one on top of another.
Even with one panel that is 30x10 I imagine you would need some metal banding to keep it rigid.
I have seen them set up precast sections for sound barriers along highways but never paid attention to the actual setup.
You know, I think we have given this more thought tonight than the government has in twenty years.
I’m going to check into the precast panels.
You have aroused my curiosity.
Time to head to bed.
Talk to you later.
My my. Another “just give up, you can’t deport them” GOPer. You must write Michael Medved’s material.
Wait, what lawsuits? An illegal will hire a lawyer to say he didn’t break the law, when in fact he did? Furthermore, are you saying that you and I would pay for said lawyer?
I want to live in that world! I can hire a lawyer to fight for me when I break the law, and not have to pay for it to boot?!
On time and under Budget I assume.
If it is funded by Taxing Monetary Transfers to Mexico, they are indirectly paying for it.
Then again, what if the Taxpayers ended up paying for it? Don’t you think securing the Border is worth paying for? How much does the Border Patrol cost the Taxpayers anyway?
Instead of all that money flowing out of the United States benefitting Mexico’s Economy, it will be used to build the Wall using American Labor and Resources. Sounds good to me.
Net result, Mexico pays for it one way or the other.
I think a 10% Tax, not 50% on the Money sent to Mexico should be enough to get the Job done.
Don’t be blinded by TDS. Securing our Border should have been Job One decades ago, don’t you agree? Obviously the Politicians from both Parties didn’t agree or we wouldn’t be talking about it today.
Not really. You assume that ever money transfer to Mexico is done by an illegal. I'm sure that the bulk of it is done by businesses and legal residents. You will be taxing them as well.
Then again, what if the Taxpayers ended up paying for it? Don't you think securing the Border is worth paying for? How much does the Border Patrol cost the Taxpayers anyway?
But that's not what Trump is promising. He isn't saying he'll only secure the border, which is desperately needed. He's saying he'll do it at no cost to the U.S.
Net result, Mexico pays for it one way or the other.
Not if we're paying for it first.
Don't be blinded by TDS. Securing our Border should have been Job One decades ago, don't you agree? Obviously the Politicians from both Parties didn't agree or we wouldn't be talking about it today.
I don't disagree that the border should have been secured long ago. But pointing out that Trump's promises are idiotic and unworkable is not being delusional. Blindly believing everything he says is.
I bid 7 !
How much do we spend every year supporting and managing illegal invaders?
I’ll answer, Trump said, “ no citizenship for deported illegals” so there will be no touch back. Now you answer how you don’t know that or do know that and are lying here on FR to FReepers.
