Cruz: Drafting women is 'nuts'
Politico ^ | 02/07/16 | Katie Glueck

Posted on 02/07/2016 2:23:04 PM PST by Isara

PETERBOROUGH, N.H.-Ted Cruz on Sunday said he opposes requiring women to register for a potential draft, breaking with Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush and Chris Christie, all of whom indicated support for opening up the Selective Service to women during Saturday night's debate.

"I have to admit, as I was sitting there listening to that conversation, my reaction was, 'Are you guys nuts?'" Cruz said Sunday, speaking at a town hall here. "Listen, we have had enough with political correctness, especially in the military. Political correctness is dangerous. And the idea that we would draft our daughters to forcibly bring them into the military and put them in close combat, I think is wrong, it is immoral, and if I am president, we ain't doing it."

To applause, Cruz went on to note that he is a father to two daughters, and he wants them to follow their dreams.

"But the idea that their government would forcibly put them in a foxhole with a 220-pound psychopath trying to kill them doesn't make any sense at all," he said.

The previous night, at the presidential debate, Rubio said he had no problem with women in combat, and added, "I do believe Selective Service should be opened up for both men and women in the case a draft is ever instituted."

Bush made a similar argument but stressed that there is no draft and he is not calling for reinstating one.

Christie was less explicit, but more broadly indicated openness to allowing women to register for the Selective Service.

If Trump would have made this statement, you guys would be back-slapping and saying what great leader he is. Does your devotion to Trump blind you to positive aspects of other candidates?

No answer. Not surprised because there is no answer. It is a waste of money to draft women. The draft inevitably fills combat slots in the Army and Marine Corps. You knew that right?

I agree completely, re abortion, and homosexual marriage, so do three wrongs make a right? So lets keep degrading civilization further since we’re already so far down the road to hell.. some logic.

Agree with you and Cruz, putting women into combat with men puts our society so far down in the toilet we might as well flush it.

What are you, some kinda girly man? What if a nice normal girl just wants to get married and raise a family? Only a homo or a total statist would demand she be forced to be in the army.

Yes, I know that. I also know that to demand one group of Americans over another based on sex is against the law. Like I said, don’t like it? Get rid of the requirement that men have to register.

btw, no, I have never served in the military. I came of age at the end of the Vietnam war. If I had to do it all over again, I still wouldn’t join. I served my country by working and paying taxes all my life. That’s just as important.

It’s tough to defend the indefensible. I would like to know how the drafting of women enhances military readiness and combat efficiency. I would also like to know why you are content to have your money wastex training people who can do the job. The job of the Army and Marine Corps is to close with and kill the enemy.

We're already uncivilized. same-sex "marriage" and killing babies in the womb equals uncivilized to me.

C.S. Lewis said that post-Christian society would be worse than pre-Christian paganism, because a post-Christian society would have deliberately rejected Christ rather than simply being ignorant of Him.

Did any pagan societies regard sodomite relationships as "marriage"?

Now that women want complete equality and all that, they should be subject to the draft.

Your attitude is heartbreaking. Why collective punishment?

"They can work non-combat roles away from the front.

Hey wait a minute, that's true. During the Second World War, when the husbands, brothers and boyfriends went off to war, it was the women who went to work in the factories building the ships, bombers, munitions and meals that supplied the troops. Without their efforts the troops would have had nothing to eat or to fight with. I've seen pictures of hundreds of women in the old Boeing factory building one plane a day. Their efforts were vital in winning the war.

However, another alternative is to end the requirement that men register with selective service. That would equalize things as well. This would be my preference.

And it is more practical and consistent with a free nation than having people register to be forced to serve their country. We have plenty of people ready to volunteer to serve our nation, and if we encouraged and trained local militias, or expanded National Guard opportunities and benefits we'd have even more people standing by to serve if needed. And many of them already have the needed skills and background.

Practically speaking the Selective Service registrations are a waste of taxpayer money. The federal government already knows about every child born in the country, and they know the names of all the 18 year olds in the country.

Of course they may not be able to locate them, since young people move around, and if the draft were to be reinstated the federal government would have to figure out how to notify the draftees, but they have that problem with or without the Selective Service registrations. As a practical matter if they really need to round up young people they could just use Facebook and the state licensing databases.

Despite Jeb Bush's stammering response at the debate, the real issue is whether or not to have a draft, and if so whether or not to draft young women for combat. If, as he says, there is no plan to reinstate the draft, then there is no reason to waste money on the Selective Service bureaucracy.

The annual push by, who is it? Rangel? to reinstitute a peacetime draft is a stupid-assed idea -- not as stupid as Pentagon orders commanders to prioritize climate change in all military actions, but still pretty expletiveing stupid.
"But the idea that their government would forcibly put them in a foxhole with a 220-pound psychopath trying to kill them doesn't make any sense at all," he said. “If politicians risked sending their daughters as well as their sons into harm’s way, I would hope they would make those decisions with extreme care”.

Yes but they don’t.

I don’t want them sending my daughters in harm’s way. Drafting women is an obscenity, as is women in combat. Women used to be cherished and protected, as did children. Now we destroy our children in the womb and put our women in combat. That’s progress???

What if a nice normal YOUNG MAN just wants to get married and raise a family? Only a homo or a total statist would demand HE be forced to be in the army. Same logic.

Feminists want their cake and eat it too. They want ‘combat’ roles and avoid the draft/Sel Service req while having lower physical reqs. No. You want to play with the big boys you not only have to meet the same requirements you have to take the same risks and responsibility (yes that means draft as well). This is putting the feminazis in their place.

FWIW, I was in Jr ROTC, and tried to sign up 3 times but was ineligible due to hearing loss in one ear.
