If you ever wondered why the man leading overwhelmingly in the polls gets booed to hell at these republican debates and gets minimal applause and frequent consternation from the audiences, Trump has given us the answer: the audiences are packed full of top republican donors.
Trump in a "drop the mic" type moment pointed this out after members of the audience booed him for supporting eminent domain, "That's all of his donors and special interests out there," Trump said, who noted Jeb and everyone else in the debate also supports eminent domain when it comes to the Keystone pipeline.
"That's what it is, and by the way, let me just tell you, we needed tickets. You can't get them. You know who has the tickets? Donors, special interests, the people that are putting up the money. That's who it is."

The campaigns also set aside debate seats for their biggest financial backers, arranging receptions and briefings for them on debate days.
"I heard people here saying, 'I've been to three, how many have you been to?' " said Washington lobbyist and GOP fundraiser Richard Hohlt. "There are people who are almost debate groupies."

He did respond to that issue earlier. He said that what he wanted to do was a good thing because people coming into the area would be able to see wonderful things instead of that old house. I don’t know what about a parking lot would be a wonderful thing.
But Keystone isn’t a public agency, it’s an independent company. So that would be the equivalent of a private highway or say a private parking lot. I’m sure if Trump had won and built the parking lot, he would have let anybody park there.
The Supreme Court has approved generally the widespread use of the power of eminent domain by federal and state governments in conjunction with private companies to facilitate urban renewal, destruction of slums, erection of low-cost housing in place of deteriorated housing, and the promotion of aesthetic values as well as economic ones. In Berman v. Parker, 186 a unanimous Court ob served: ''The concept of the public welfare is broad and inclusive. The values it represents are spiritual as well as physical, aesthetic as well as monetary. It is within the power of the legislature to determine that the community should be beautiful as well as healthy, spacious as well as clean, well-balanced as well as carefully patrolled.'' For ''public use,'' then, it may well be that ''public interest'' or ''public welfare'' is the more correct phrase - See more at: http://constitution.findlaw.com/amendment5/annotation14.html#sthash.9n9ZlkLH.dpuf
It is not like the GOPe donors booing were a bunch of raging conservatives.
It's an independent company -- but it operates under public regulation and its services are available to all.
The "common carrier" application of eminent domain goes back to the post roads and ferries of colonial times.
Huge difference between a private industry that is vital to national security and vital to economy like energy compared to a parking lot for a casino.
If you can’t see that, you must be a Trump supporter.
Trump first always, conservatism if convenient.
-Yes, the pipeline is a regulated utility like electricity so it is public use.
All businesses are regulated so this is a bit legalistic.
Maybe not the Keystone XL pipeline that transports crude from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, but that isn't the only kind of pipeline.
Generally speaking, would you say that a pipeline that transports jet fuel that runs from a private refinery to an airport is a public use because the airport is a public entity, even though the airlines are private corporations? If the airport requires crude oil to come into refinery for the jet fuel to come out, is the crude oil pipeline also a public use?

I don’t know who the hell they were, but his liberal position on the issue deserves booing.
Where does the oil going through the Keystone pipe line end up?
Filling stations, (for profit), export (for profit), heating oil (for profit)....
So tell me why profit from Keystone is godly where profit from a nice apartment or subdivision is the work of the devil.
No, I’ve been following your blithering rationales that obliterate the scope and intent of the takings clause under the 5th Amendment with much disdain and your blatant dishonesty is troubling regarding your claim that government can confiscate private property from party a and transfer it to party b or in other words your private home can be taken to make way for a Motel 6 if a bureaucrat can find an economic benefit. No amount of sophistry can overcome the meaning and purpose of ‘public use’. Also, I stand by indignation regarding the effort to seize Vera Coking’s private property so The Donald has limousine parking for a casino. I would question your motive in defending such confiscation.
I am not agreeing with it, but right nowTrump’s position is same as SCOTUS post Kelo. It was also a somewhat hypocritical answer from JEB!. As pointed out on another thread his brother was part to a group that used Eminent Domain to acquire land from hundreds of property owners to build the ball park at Arlington for the Rangers.
The Government definitely doesn’t get a pass on the issue but the subject was Trump’s enthusiastic support Kelo and given his personal benefit from such confiscation, its not hard to see why and I take issue with giving him a passon the issue.
I doubt the Cruz campaign got more tickets than the Trump campaign. The establishment doesn’t want either of them.
>>> Trump said, who noted Jeb and everyone else in the debate also supports eminent domain when it comes to the Keystone pipeline
...and, apparently, Texas Baseball stadiums.
“That’s what it is, and by the way, let me just tell you, we needed tickets. You can’t get them. You know who has the tickets? Donors, special interests, the people that are putting up the money. That’s who it is.”

So glad Trump said that. Explains a lot.
Please allow my inner cynicism to manifest itself. What good does it do apart from a fleeting mention during the debates? The viewing public don't really understand, the MSM won't report it and the audience either don't care or they resent their dirty laundry being aired. Donald - make it a MINIMUM 5 minute pitch about how the country is run by an all-powerful Uniparty and this is another example.

Eminent domain needs a public purpose for it to pass constitutional muster.
Utilities ( including energy ) roads, bridges, all qualify.
Parking lot at the Donald’s casino does not.
Are the cultists so deluded? Trump was laughing at these fools with his 5th ave shooting comment, but I actually think cultists on this site would still support him.
Pretty scary.
If you listen to Trump’s side, doesn’t always win with eminent domain. People often get more money for their properties.
You might want to read this.
Reading it to the end is important.
You might also note that it was tried in the courts and the woman won, which means that eminent domain law was folloed
But the woman, by being blind in her anger, lost $450,000 and Trump the supposed villian saved what? Maybe 100 or more million.
Point being that it worked out as it should have.
