No-one doubts that Cruz, a former national college debating champion, is exceptionally bright. Most exceptionally bright people cannot resist the temptation to wing it, simply because they can. Not so Cruz. He combines high intelligence with enormous discipline and capacity for work. Betsy McCaughey, a former Republican Lieutenant-Governor of New York, observes that self-discipline of this kind bespeaks humility: he is smart enough to know that even smart people can make big mistakes, and that hard work is the best insurance against missteps. Humility is not a personality trait one immediately associates with a politician who has opposed virtually all his colleagues in the Senate, but it is required to solicit and obtain the support of grassroots leaders, as Cruz did.

Trumpelstiltskin, meanwhile, has revealed a side of his character that voters hitherto have ignored, or even admired in a perverse way. He inherited wealth and ran a private company the way he wanted to, saying what he wanted and hiring and firing whom he pleased, without answering to partners, shareholders or the general public.
He is not a particularly good businessman; had he invested his inheritance in a stock-market index fund, his net worth would be double what it is today. But the psychic rewards of unrestricted narcissism more than compensated for the unperformance of his portfolio. He has had the opportunity to retain the infantile instincts of a child of wealth into his dotage. He cannot bear to lose; he cannot even bear to accept part of the responsibility for a loss.

He is the greatest American since George Washington. Did you know that he spends his money to fight for your country?
Trump doesn’t believe in stocks. That’s why he told Bernie Madoff he wasn’t interested.
And he is not a Lawyer and politician.
Actually did some work.
Neocon “Spengler” = David P. Goldman
Trump’s investment performance indicate he has a personality problem which is why he’s been on tv forever and out all the candidates people are least sick of seeing his face on tv.
This article blows goats.
Completely false. Forbes checked into this, and found his wealth would be about 75% of what they estimate it is now, NOT double.
Yes, people are so sick of seeing him, approaching 400,000 people have gone to see him in person at one of his rallies.
I’m not a fan of Trump - but this article is REALLY snarky.
I imagine lots of wealthy business owners might do better if they put all of their money in stocks. Of course then one doesn’t have the joy of creating stuff. And how about enjoying stuff? Did the writer account for all of the stuff Trump gets to enjoy (homes, vacations, cars, etc.) - or is all of that wealth also tied up in the stock market?
Trump didn't inherit great wealth "before" he made it on his own and he is a VERY good business man.
Trump c an "wing it", because he actually IS brilliant.
Cruz may be the kin d of person who can easily get good grades, but he can't thin k on his feet, is incapable of "winging it", and like any good programmed robot, is very capable of repeating what he has studied and practiced saying. That's akin to Obama being a good telep;romp;ter reader.
A multi-billionaire—not too shabby. Real Estate is what he inherited and knows. Trump is a disciplined worker and leader. His mouth is not so disciplined however.
I like Cruz a lot and he was my first choice but the number Trump does on the press, I think we NEED someone like him.
Everything everyone says about him is what they used to say about Reagan as well.
What did you think of my erudite comment, O doughty one?
I’ve had my ration of these stupid Trump hit pieces.
Maybe it’s time we started giving them the reception they deserve.
I agree. While reading, I heard it in the voice of that infamous Republican strategist, Rick Wilson.
"Spengler" writes that he got the idea from his daughter: "Trumpelstiltskin", isn't that clever.
I’m not impressed with this article, neither Trump or Cruz are perfect, neither Cruz or Trump are rotten, They both have very strong points and articles that are so imbalanced will change the minds of no one.
I had to go look that phrase up.
erudite=’smarty pants’
I agree. The truth is, it’s over for Ted.
Let them have their last remnant of happiness this election cycle.
When I think of all the money he blew on Iowa, spending a full year there, and couldn’t beat Trump by more than three point three precent, even using shady tricks...
It’s going to be a real short year for some people.
About all Ted succeeded in doing was to burn up supporter cash.
