Lutoslawski: Variations on a Theme of Paganini for 2 Pianos

Witold Lutoslawski (1913-94) was a major Polish composer who spent much of his life dodging Nazis and Communists. Not surprisingly, he backed the Solidarity movement and received one of Poland's highest honors before his death. The second "L" in his last name has a slash through it, not reproducible with FR's current software, and it's pronounced like an English "W." The Polish "W"s in his name are to be pronounced like English "V"s. (VIT-old lu-to-SWAAV-skee)

Every composer worth his salt wrote variations on Paganini's 24th Caprice, and Witold wrote his set in the modern idiom of dissonance. It's short and a lot of fun.

That is a rarely heard Beatles tune. McCartney is his early days knew how to use the 3 minute limit to get his ideas across.

I’m not sure, Randy. I see her occasionally on Facebook,, but for some reason she’s quit posting music. Got busy with family, I suppose. I sure miss her though.

WINTER FESTIVAL

Schubert: String Quintet in C, D. 956

This is the greatest piece of chamber music ever written. Two weeks after Frannie finished it, he was dead from a combination of typhoid and secondary syphilis.

I posted the finale a while ago with its Carrie-hand-coming-out-of-the-grave ending, but this scherzo has a playful atmosphere. Schubert writes a violin line that's a cross between bagpipes and country fiddling, and in the Seattle performance, Tessa Lark's second violin hit that brilliantly, thanks to her Bluegrass background. It was Appalachian Schubert.

In most scherzi, the central panel keeps the rhythm going, but in this case, Frannie stops it cold for a second slow movement in the Neapolitan interval, that is, one-half tone upward, C to D-flat. This central panel is a post-death, out-of-body experience set to music, which makes me wonder if he had an inkling of what was about to happen to him.

Back to Rockumentary next week.
