Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recounted his older half-sister's struggles with drug addiction and eventual death during an emotional speech Thursday.
"These tragedies are happening in human lives all over this country -- it's the human journey," the GOP presidential candidate said at Emanuel Baptist Church in Hooksett, N.H., according to CNN. "It's fraught with peril and sometimes people make decisions bound and determined to destroy themselves.
"As a family you wonder: What could I have done more? Was there a way to change the path she was on? Those are the questions you never fully answer."
Cruz was describing Miriam Cruz, one of two children from his father Rafael Cruz's first marriage. He said she resented her parents' divorce and eventually turned towards prescription painkillers.
"Every one of us who has dealt with these demons -- or who has dealt with loved ones grappling with these demons -- everyone knows that these are personal journeys," Cruz said.
"Faith and a relationship with God can be a powerful, powerful element in turning that around," he added, citing his father's own method for escaping alcohol addiction.
Cruz added that he tried intervening in his half-sister's issues but could not convince her she needed rehabilitation.

“We could stop 90% of the drug trafficking and usage in this country simply by sealing our border.”
That’s a bit simplistic and pollyannaish but realistically by a third at least.
Nope. As long as there are buyers, sellers will find a way to met the demand.
Take a hike noob troll.
No. NH is plagued with heroin overdoses that el Chapoâs dreamers are trafficking.
Trump talked about that, at his town hall interview with Anderson C, last night. They really do have a YUGE drug problem, there.
Heroin is a huge problem in SW PA as well.
My youngest graduated from HS last spring...his school was dubbed “heroin high” by neighboring districts (I heard it my self at his sporting events). I’m talking suburban district w/a big influx of two professionals in the family, half million dollar neighborhoods (being built on farm lands). A teacher was ARRESTED last year for selling (off campus—not to her HS students) stamp bags.
Our township was somewhat rural when we moved here thirty years ago. It’s now a suburb, with some very low income and (newer) higher income areas. The mix of economics I think has contributed to the problem.
When I go for a walk in my neighborhood I have seen needles on the street (our neighborhood is a “pass thru” to a major thorofare. when our home was broken into in 2014, the responding officer shrugged and said “probably a junkie.” In addition to rifling thru drawers, they went thru medicine cabinets.
And finally, and this has happened numerous times, our local tv (Pittsburgh) issued WARNINGS that a particular type heroin, currently circulating, is laced with (fill in blank) and is x times more potent than “regular” heroin and x number of people have overdosed and/or died. It’s an epidemic. I don’t know the answer.
Maybe it was absenteeism that the half-sister resented.
I don’t think Cruz’s half sister OD’ing has any reflection on him.
That demand would go way down though to the point where only hard-core drug abusers will use domestic drugs such as meth, prescription drugs, or alcohol. The cartels would be put out of business.
The half-sister was born in Texas.
Seems more timed to maximize its impact in NH, which has few problems other than a drug or, especially, heroin “epidemic”.
The people are electing someone to represent them. Cruz is telling them he can relate to their experiences firsthand. You think candidates should try extra hard to cover up their life story so that they can relate LESS to the common man? What planet are you on?
Cruz’ mother was on stage for his Iowa celebration speech and he spoke about her and embraced her. Did you miss it?
Ted “feels your pain”.
Daddy first went to England, leaving Ted and his Mother alone for years, then went to the US,
then back to England, then back to the US where he finally decided to become a US Citizen.
Reminds me of Obama’s absent adored father.

Maybe you should read this article for some detailed info on the family. Papa Cruz wasn’t the
one going to England, it was Edward’s mother’s first husband, Alan Wilson. In fact Edward’s
mother went to England also.

Ostensibly not to throw the NH primary.
He was speaking in a church and related how faith is an important part of his life...in other words expedient to his audience
----Every one of us who has dealt with these demons â or who has dealt with loved ones grappling with these demons â everyone knows that these are personal journeys,â Cruz said. ----
---- âFaith and a relationship with God can be a powerful, powerful element in turning that around,â he added, citing his fatherâs own method for escaping alcohol addiction.----
Just like say Trump would recount a business story, if he was meeting with a group of business man ....
You need to get a grip...
Yes!
Old Rafeal is difficult to keep track of or which country he belongs to...like his son....took him long enough to decide to be an ‘American’! He did leave Ted and his mother.
His father left Cuba in 1957 to attend the University of Texas at Austin and obtained political asylum in the United States after his four-year student visa expired.[20] Rafael Cruz earned Canadian citizenship in 1973[7] and ultimately became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2005.[ Wikipedia
This begs the question; how is a Fundamentalist Baptist divorced and paid to pastor ?
