Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) recounted his older half-sister's struggles with drug addiction and eventual death during an emotional speech Thursday.
"These tragedies are happening in human lives all over this country -- it's the human journey," the GOP presidential candidate said at Emanuel Baptist Church in Hooksett, N.H., according to CNN. "It's fraught with peril and sometimes people make decisions bound and determined to destroy themselves.
"As a family you wonder: What could I have done more? Was there a way to change the path she was on? Those are the questions you never fully answer."
Cruz was describing Miriam Cruz, one of two children from his father Rafael Cruz's first marriage. He said she resented her parents' divorce and eventually turned towards prescription painkillers.
"Every one of us who has dealt with these demons -- or who has dealt with loved ones grappling with these demons -- everyone knows that these are personal journeys," Cruz said.
"Faith and a relationship with God can be a powerful, powerful element in turning that around," he added, citing his father's own method for escaping alcohol addiction.
Cruz added that he tried intervening in his half-sister's issues but could not convince her she needed rehabilitation.

Who knows?
At any rate, I’m unsurprised by the many uncharitable remarks here.
“Ted Cruz using anyone or anything to win. No thanks. Why bring this up now. It is politically expedient, that is why”
I had kind of the same reaction. There is just something about Cruz that I don’t like. Sometimes he seems too cheezy and too prepared. I’m not sure he’s likeable to independents or women. I’m a woman and most women I know don’t like him either.
I said “local action,” not “Federal government mandate” or “expensive Federal boondoggle.”
Why does not Cruz discuss ObamaTRADE (whose vote
he voted to allow) or ObamaCARE (which is a TAX and law
because of Cruz’s push for Blackrobe Roberts),
instead of using his family.
Hmmmm this group monitors Republicans. Well, if they voted against the provision there was a very good reason and I trust Cruz to explain. How crass for a group to attack Cruz when he has a close family member die from drug use.
This is soooooo personal....to her...not to Ted. It’s not his to be publicized. There are plenty examples of drug abuse and divorces...et, etc...
“But if this is the skeez BB has as a zinger, it is in extremely bad taste.”
I have no clue what the zinger is about, but I can assure you that the death of his half-sister is not it.
I was accused this morning on another thread of being a nasty poster. So I reviewed mine of the past two weeks.
Perhaps I am blind to my faults (no doubt), but I found nothing I am ashamed of.
/self serve mode
That’s the headline of the OP.
I agree and I have applied the same logic to Chelsea Clinton, who deserved to be judged on her own merit, but not ridiculed because of the acts of her parents.
But a glimpse over FR threads will disclosed that outrage is quite selective, depending on the political affiliation of the particular individual being scorned.
No matter. Such judgements are above ALL our paygrades anyway.
My firsthand experience with addiction makes one thing immutably and unequivocally clear...All the efforts in the world by others will not help the victim of abuse if they're not willing to help themselves.
What is OP?
I do not agree about Chelsea Clinton because she has persisted in, benefited from, and aspired to future political careers solely on the basis of her family connection - the daughter of Hillary Clinton.
She has continuously taken advantage of that fact her entire adult like and still persists at it.
She is fair, fair game in my book.
The title of the original posted thread.
We get it that you loathe, fear, despise and are sickened at the thought of a Pres. Cruz!
One is still able to discuss unpleasant things or tragedies from ones own family if one is running for office today. Those things are sure to come up or be dug up by the same "investigative crack reporters," that ignored a history of known recent drug use, family history and intimate friends of Barack Hussein Obama!
Since we've been treated to hourly obnoxious, and incessant bragging about all things by the Trumpster!
Do us all a favor and skip on by any article that even mentions the name Cruz and go rain on someone else's parade!
Have a nice day!
Its a significant problem here in Wisconsin too (heroin) and was a main platform item in the State AG race here.
Mark Belling (fills in for Rush) last summer mentioned during his local show how surprised he was about how much heroin issues he was hearing about early in one show. The next two hours were listeners of his either parents, recovering addicts or current addicts talking about the death or destruction heroin is having on their children’s lives.
Mark was so shocked that he spent the next day talking about what we’re trying to do to fight it.
As the parent of 4 kids I was utterly shocked at how prevalent it has become.
Or maybe because it is relevant to problems that NH is dealing with right now. Don't you think NH voters who are struggling with the problems in their families caused by drug addiction or alcoholism might want to know the candidate understands what they are dealing with?
He has no chance with Independents. I am a conservative but an independent who votes Republican 99% of the time, except locally on occasion. He has zero chance to unite the party.
A very Jeb! kind of story.
Trump's unfavorables are very high. Poll from NH yesterday had 3 times as many saying there was no way they vote Trump than would not vote Cruz.
That was among Republicans. I expect he has Hillary like unfavorables (or worse) among the general electorate
