Rush is Establishment anti-Trump. That’s why he is pimping both Cruz and Rubio, the only two close to Trump in the polls. He has his orders from his Establishment bosses to make sure Trump doesn’t get in. The other guys to varying degrees are acceptable.
Rush backed Pat Buchanan in the 1992 primary. Then he got a White House invite from George HW Bush and Rush has never been the same since. Read what Rush had to say about Pat Buchanan the next time around in 1996:

Before Iowa, Cruz was going along with the conservative conventional wisdom: “We can’t trust the main stream media!”
Then when Cruz said Carson was folding his tent, and Carson exploded, well (just like the misleading and insulting Voter Mailers) Cruz got all, “That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!” and his position was, “CNN got it right.”
Then .. when it became clear that—well, you really can’t trust the main stream media, his position morphed back into, “CNN got it wrong!”?
