Newport News police are investigating after a man reported he was pushed to the ground and had his handgun stolen late last week.
Officers responded to a report of the robbery in the 6000 block of Jefferson Avenue just before 8 p.m. Jan. 29, according to police spokesman Harold Eley.
The victim, a 37-year-old Hampton man, told police he was robbed as he walked across Jefferson Avenue to the lot at the Windsor House after visiting a friend at the Travelers Inn. He was wearing his handgun in a holster, open carry, on his hip, Eley said.
The man said he was approached from behind by two men, and one of them demanded his gun. The other then grabbed the gun from the holster and pushed him to the ground. Both men fled on foot southbound toward the trailer parks, Eley said.

Guy needs to use a retention holster and be more aware of his surroundings. And maybe carry a New York reload.

Hate to judge and stereotype but dang.
Agreed. Open carry is fine but you have to acknowledge it attracts attention. Many times unwanted attention. You have to be a lot quicker on the draw with open carry.
Mmmm, two guys, one behind, grabs it out of the holster; which begs the question as to why it wasn’t held in with a strap - don’t want it falling out when sitting and all ...
I read “Virginia” as something else.
open carry is good for ones ego.
But, you might as well put a Rolex on your hat.
The punks were lucky he didn’t have a backup piece.
I know that part of NN.. it’s near the corner of Jefferson and Mercury... it has a reputation for being “homey.”
a lot of freepers have lost their firearms in boating accidents......just sayin’. i think this is much more creative.
Open carry should be legal for all law-abiding Americans, but it is not always prudent. Anyone with open carry should also have something concealed, since they have a responsibility to ensure that a criminal doesn’t get away with their gun like these thugs did.
That’s been done:
Haha, he forgot to switch outta “don’t blow my arm off” mode. ;-)
Situational awareness deficit.
Good, that will teach him. Best he not carry another if he doesn’t intend to protect himself when he has one. He’s lucky they didn’t use it on him.
Problem is if he did shoot them and they are unarmed, he’d be the one going to jail. At a minimum he’d have to pay a small fortune to defend himself. Much better to carry concealed if at all
And, when the bad guy comes through the door, the open carry people are the first ones he shoots.
Stand your ground.
Agreed.
