As the Iowa caucus results rolled in Monday night, the wheels were surely turning in the minds of editors at the New York Daily News. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump — the local entry and a favorite tabloid target — was losing to Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. Which way to go with Tuesday's cover?
There were so many options. "Iowans fire The Donald"? Nah. A "you're fired" joke is too predictable. "Trump is a loser?" It would've just been white noise. Too many people were already turning Trump's favorite insult around on Twitter.
Instead, the Daily News went with a running theme: "Dead clown walking" — a sequel to "Clown runs for prez" (June 17) and "Insane clown posse" (Jan. 21). Actually, it goes back further than that — to "Sideshow Don" (April 11, 2011), when Trump was toying with the idea of a 2012 White House bid.

Seriously, in a lot of places it takes more votes to win a city council seat than Cruz got in Iowa. Iowa is important because it is the start of the contest. But it does let people know what kind of a campaign to expect from the candidates.
We can expect the Canadian to run the nastiest campaign. We can expect to see the billionaire tone it back a little. We can expect to see a massive amount of cash flow into amnesty boy’s campaign. The surgeon looks tired and we can probably expect more sulking.

Iowa doesn’t pick the winners. They’re 50/50,
It was a close race. In fact, the winner was Rubio who did more than two times better than expected.
Trump learned a lot from Iowa it was his first rodeo.
If he applies the lessons elsewhere where he has leads in the polls he’ll do fine.
I expect Rubo to get hit hard from Cruz and Trump camps over the next couple of weeks and not so much fighting each other.
Speaking of which, has Cruz been given Secret Service protection yet? Last I’d heard only Trump and Carson on the GOP side had it. Maybe, I don’t know, the Capital police provide equivalent protection to Senators and thus cover Cruz, Rubio, Paul and Sanders.
