Today I was shown a piece of literature from the Cruz for President campaign that misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law. Accusing citizens of Iowa of a "voting violation" based on Iowa Caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act. There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses.
Additionally, the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office never "grades" voters. Nor does the Secretary of State maintain records related to Iowa Caucus participation. Caucuses are organized and directed by the state political parties, not the Secretary of State, nor local elections officials. Also, the Iowa Secretary of State does not "distribute" voter records. Even if you disagreed that these mailings are threats, I think anyone would agree that they are intended as “intimidation”, and, that, too, is against the law specifically.

Yes they are intimidation especially the part about a follow up. Creepy.
I will honestly say if I found out Trump was doing that it would really be a problem for me to continue to support him.
Same here. If Trump used illegal and creepy tactics like Ted Cruz just did he’d lose my support. Underhanded tactics are expected, but threats and intimidation are not acceptable. Those are fighting words.
The emails I get daily from his camp are almost as bad so yes, I guess he could be that stupid. The emails asking for $ have turned me off him...Big Time
These scorecards were used in Iowa very effectively by Obama in the past.
The problem is that Dem voters have no problem with a “big brother state/intrusive mailing” like this. You know, if only “all the people” would vote, Dems would win every race 70-30 and all that rot. Dems love this type of appeal.
GOP voters don’t like it at all. We hate that type of stuff. We just want to be left alone in privacy. That’s where Ted botched it.
I expect Trump to just step out of the way and let Cruz bleed out between now and Monday but after that he will be beating Cruz with this stuff night and day. How about the next debate? Oye! :-)
Trump obviously has a more instinctive sense of how to motivate people than this demonstrates although the notice itself didn’t look all that official. How a semi engaged voter can believe there is such thing as a formal “violation” for not going to the polls I’m not quite sure.
I think we are seeing the backroom Ted, the one that owes some people his political career. Glenn Beck’s involvement is as creepy as it gets.
Trump’s letter is one I would expect from a political campaign: Hi, if you are a Republican voter please vote for me and this is how you can go about doing that.
That is perfectly legal. No threats, no intimidation, no nothing; if you are going to vote then this is how.
Beck was a mistake. The shaming letter was reckless. Cruz is hitting the wall at Mach I.

| Yes, Beck was a big mistake for Cruz. Since Beck's company Blaze is imploding, Beck is setting himself up to be the opposition to Trump for 4 to 8 years. He will probably go after Trump on the "meanness" of sending illegal immigrants home. There are plenty of corporate donors from Silicon Valley and elsewhere who will pay Beck money to push the Cheap Labor Express. Perhaps it's this change of focus that is causing his acolytes and supporters at Blaze to jump ship. Beck is a brilliant demagogue. Yep. I realized after Cruz campaigned for the most lawless POTUS in US history by enabling Obamatrade that Cruz the man did not match the myth.

Telling voters they are in VIOLATION is a good campaign strategy?
On the other side, the mailer said in red letters at the top, “VOTING VIOLATION.†The text then reads:
You are receiving this election notice because of low expected voter turnout in your area. Your individual voting history as well as your neighbors’ are public record. Their scores are published below, and many of them will see your score as well. CAUCUS ON MONDAY TO IMPROVE YOUR SCORE and please encourage your neighbors to caucus as well. A follow-up notice may be issued following Monday’s caucuses.
The reaction on Twitter was swift, and largely negative. Many viewed the mailer as a privacy violation.
