Today I was shown a piece of literature from the Cruz for President campaign that misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law. Accusing citizens of Iowa of a "voting violation" based on Iowa Caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act. There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses.
Additionally, the Iowa Secretary of Stateâs Office never "grades" voters. Nor does the Secretary of State maintain records related to Iowa Caucus participation. Caucuses are organized and directed by the state political parties, not the Secretary of State, nor local elections officials. Also, the Iowa Secretary of State does not "distribute" voter records. They are available for purchase for political purposes only, under Iowa Code." - Paul D. Pate, Iowa Secretary of State

“What is the context here? What did Cruz do?”
There is an earlier post here on FR that outlines what was done/ Basically, Cruz is trying to threaten voters to go out and caucus. It was basically a card with the voter’s name on it, along with six of his or her neighbors togehter with a percentage of those voters participation in the caucuses and a Letter Grade Cruz is done, because of this crap!
Teddy should have asked himself, “What would Jesus send?”.
It was thought up by many political campaigns in the past. This appears to be a direct copy nearly of similar things sent out by campaigns for Republicans and Democrats alike years ago. Cruz obviously has no direct involvement in approving every thing his campaign operatives do. He isn’t aware of what people say on the phone when they make calls for him, what they say when they go door to door or what they mail out. This is just a standard, common political mailing. Nothing to get excited about and it has absolutely no reflection on Cruz personally.
But it will get him a lot of press over the weekend.
“This mailer has been used in the past, without such condemnation by the Iowa Secretary of State. Check out who Mr. Paul D. Pate is supporting, and youâll likely find Rubio, imho.”
That still doesn’t make it right!
It is kind of judgmentally condescending, or maybe condescendingly judgmental.
It’s funny to see how people fight, because this shows what they really believe in.
He’s as white and innocent as the driven snow.
No, it's an old tactic used by many campaigns in the past. Whoever's working on his mail operation just pulled it out of a standard playbook.
“...the Iowa Secretary of State does not “distribute” voter records. They are available for purchase for political purposes only, under Iowa Code.” â Paul D. Pate, Iowa Secretary of State
*************************************************************************
Strange “statement” by the Sec of State...so voter records are “available for purchase for political purposes only” (and ALL campaigns to purchase the records to build their data bases) but the “Secretary of State does not ‘distribute’ voter records”?
If they don’t “distribute” the sold records to the buyers of those records, how the hell would the buyers receive them. I do believe this GOPe official is quibbling and playing with words. But I guess that is normal in this political season.
Don’t know. . .but possibly an effort by an unaffiliated group that is eager and stepped out of bounds?
I suspect this was not authorized nor supported by the Cruz campaign.
Cruz stepped in it BIG TIME.
Does the general voting public get to vote in a caucus or is it just for people active in the party?
I’m suspicious of just about anything of this nature which happens in the days immediately preceding a vote. It takes time for it to be noticed and responded to if it was a dirty trick by other candidates.
“Nothing to get excited about and it has absolutely no reflection on Cruz personally.”
Oh please! Cruz’ campaign is cratering over this. Anything “his campaign” does is a reflection on him.
One thing is certain, though. Even if Cruz, my favored candidate, is damaged and becomes a non-factor by the time of the Missouri primary on March 15, there is one candidate I definitely will not be voting for, and that is Donald Trump. Trump is a total embarrassment. I would vote for one of the other guys--i.e., the next-best overall social and constitutional conservative--before I would ever vote for Trump.
So it seems a general get out the vote gimmick.
How does he know it isn’t going to get people to vote for someone other than himself?
Cruz can deny but people WILL attribute it to him, and it might push some fence sitters to Trump.
In over 1000 posts you failed to make your case, and now it appears you have learned absolutely nothing!
Ted Cruz has flipped his noggin!!! The voter letter is embarrassing in the least...but, siding with the lunatic madman, ego-maniac, Glenn Beck is political suicide. If there is any Iowa voter that casts their vote for Ted Cruz....they are either high on reefer or just plain insane!!! GO Donald Trump!!! Ted Cruz has done himself in!!! You gotta catch his campaign Manager....a real loser, from the gitgo!!! SAD!!!
His campaign manager admitted it. What more proof do you need?
It was a questionable call to purchase this political direct mailing by the Cruz campaign, conservatives in general react poorly to such things. So, there’s that. There’s another campaign going on to gain political advantage by fanning the flames of controversy, though. I’d say it’s Rubio.
