Who won the ratings race: Fox News or Donald Trump?
CNN ^ | January 29, 2016

Donald Trump counter-programmed Thursday's GOP primary debate on Fox with his own prime time event. So whose show scored a bigger audience?

Answer: Fox's debate. But it was the second lowest rated debate of the season. So Trump is certain to take credit for hurting the channel's total viewership.

Fox News Channel's Trump-less debate had an 8.4 household rating, according to early Nielsen data from so-called metered markets.

This means 8.4% of American metered market homes with TV sets were watching the face-off.

By comparison, two of the cable channels that showed parts of Trump's event, CNN and MSNBC, had about a quarter of Fox's audience combined.

So Trump's rivals clearly came out ahead in the raw ratings.

The most recent GOP debate, televised two weeks ago on the harder-to-find Fox Business Network, had a household rating of 7.4.

So Thursday's debate was bigger -- but not by much. The other five GOP debates of the cycle have had household ratings ranging from 8.9 to 15.9.

Debates always fade as the election goes on....the last debate with Trump was substantially lower than the 25 million mark!!!

I switched from CNN to CSPAN when they interrupted the rally with comments by Beckel how Trump should have been at the debate.

The customers wanted to see the Republican candidates.

It would have been very easy for Ailes to replace Kelly and satisfy the customers.

He didn’t.

The customers aren’t important to him.

This does not take into consideration OAN where we were able to watch uninterrupted the full Vets rally. So the numbers are skewed.
......................................

I watched on C Span and there were no interruptions and full coverage straight through. I also noticed something rare. The camera SPANNED the room showing the huge audience...more than once.

Then don’t watch fox.

If he would have caved he would lose all credibility to both customers as well as his advertisers. If the other networks do not see what is going on then Trimp will do the same thing to them when he creates some imaginary BS.

Good point

Fox News is in 95 million homes

Fox Business News is in 80 Million homes

The viewership ratings must be compared to the first Fox debate (apples to apples), and the drop is significant.

The luck of Trump cost them big-time, but they will spin it otherwise.

“Very small % of people under 30 ever sit through any TV ads.”

This may mostly apply to people under 30, but this family over 60 quit conventional TV a few years back not just because 33% of a show is advertising, but also because the content of most programs are too far left.

We love streaming, can pick and choose exactly what we want to watch. No ads, and either change shows or fast forward when the leftist stuff such as homo’s is snuck into a program.

Those type of comments have no place here.
And was way out of line.

You should be riding the bolt for Hitler comment.

The ratings went up without Trump. Good. Millions of people got to see a more serious and substantive debate without the clown act and the insults.

"Trump's show was....well, I'll be polite....tedious."

Trump can be quite entertaining when he is throwing juvenile slurs at someone...the media, other candidates, Democrats, etc. When he doesn't have that to fall back on, you can only hear "tremendous", "wonderful", "beautiful", "great", repeated over, over, and over....so many times, without it becoming, well.....tedious.

Let’s raise the drill bit just a bit.

How long did Fox push the Iowa Presidential Debate? As in the number of days and number of spots per day? How about the other broadcast networks?

How much exposure did Trump’s show get? Again, the same question - number of days and number of spots per day and the number of networks involved.

Base on the extremely short lead time to publicize his event I think the Trump campaign did very good to attract the audience share they did.

I have to wonder what his audience share would have been if the Trump Campaign had had two weeks notice instead of two days.

Not for a half-hour soliloquy by one guy (not his fault, at all)...plus Mr. Trump's usual blathering about his own and his friends' wealth for the first twenty minutes... from a production-critique standpoint it was slapdash and boring like it was put together by Phyllis Diller......nothing personal against anyone on stage.....much as you would like to make it so.

I saw a side of Trump last night that bodes well for his general election victory. He granted the CNN commie chick a 10 minute interview prior to the Vet rally. Several of her questions were gotcha style similar to the angle that the Fox moderators used for Trump during the first debate. Every time Donald would stop the question and correct the false assertion before he would comment. He refused to be grilled by the biased reporter. Most of our candidates never learned a damn thing when dealing with the MSM.
