ANALYSIS: Debate Without Trump Favors Trump
abcnews.com ^ | January 28

It turns out that a world without Donald Trump is filled with Donald Trump anyway.

To many in the Republican Party, Thursday night's debate was a dream scenario -- seven candidates, and not a reality TV show billionaire in sight. No huge walls were hypothetically built, and no religious groups were banned from entry into the United States.

Yet Trump was still everywhere. He was there for viewers on another channel, giant American flag behind him, two other Republican candidates beside him, chants of "USA, USA, USA" enveloping them.

He was also there with the candidates as the "elephant not in the room," as moderator Megyn Kelly put it, or as Jeb Bush's non-showing "little teddy bear."

His absence was felt, moreover, when the leading candidates tangled over the hot-button issue of immigration. Trump wasn't there to take heat for them, or to face any real scrutiny of his own.

Trump's dominance in the race was revealed by the extent to which the debate lacked an obvious center of gravity. The party and its candidates have grown used to the front-runner; surely the same is true for viewers treated to a debate season like no other.

I tuned in sporadically. Every time I tuned in, it seemed like a lot of bickering and fighting about nonsense with a cheap shot thrown at Trump every couple of minutes.

NOT TRUMP AGAIN!

I’m so tired of winning.

It is pretty much a given fact that hadn’t Donald Trump come along, tonight’s debates would revolve around taxes, the environment, and social security.

Question of the night: Who the Hell actually votes for Kasich!?

This is only a wild guess, but I'm guessing Kasich. ;-)

I think when Cruz made his remark about leaving if he got any more mean questions, he was trying to be sarcastic, taking another shot at Mr. Trump.

I liked Cruz, but he did sound like a jerk last night.

I want to see if Rush is going to point out the Murdoch connection with open borders and his support of Rubio.

Fox is not unbiased and should not qualify to hold a debate.

The Rubio fawning started right after the debate, as I suspected it would. Frank Luntz was particularly nauseating.

CNN put it in the 100’s for Trumps audience.

Trump - His persona is bigger than life. His shadow looms over all campaign events now taking place whether he is on the scene or not. I predict that phenomena will prevail throughout the coming years.

Was there really a “debate” last night? I must have had something more important to do, like shining my shoes or shoveling the walk again. I’m totally sick of these so called “debates”, they have outlived their importance.

What is creepy about a woman expressing desire for her husband after a notable success in a risky venture?

Chicks dig that stuff.

If an event is on C-Span and somewhere else, C-Span if the only way to go; it’s pure.

They knew it too. In Fox’s own Greta poll, 83 percent of viewers said they were going to watch trump instead.

“Chicks dig that stuff.”

You are correct. Chicks dig men manly men who will say, “You’ve got to stand up for yourself!” — and then do it. The feminism movement has tried to make people think that women don’t want to be protected by their men. We do. It’s a turn-on.
