Bipartisan deals -- so beloved by media pundits -- have produced some of the great disasters in American history.
Contrary to the widespread view that the Great Depression of the 1930s was caused by the stock market crash of 1929, unemployment never reached double digits in any of the 12 months that followed the stock market crash in October, 1929.
Unemployment was 6.3 percent in June 1930 when a Democratic Congress and a Republican president made a bipartisan deal that produced the Smoot-Hawley tariffs. Within 6 months, unemployment hit double digits -- and stayed in double digits throughout the entire decade of the 1930s.
You want deals? There was never a more politically successful deal than that which Neville Chamberlain made in Munich in 1938. He was hailed as a hero, not only by his own party but even by opposition parties, when he returned with a deal that Chamberlain said meant "peace for our time." But, just one year later, the biggest, bloodiest and most ghastly war in history began.

“The people are fed up with establishment politics and want rebellion. Trump is rebellion.”
The best and clearest assessment I have read or heard anywhere.
The gop still cannot understand it....this started with Bush 1 reneging on his emphatic promise of “no new taxes”. Then the idiots were all puzzled when ghwb couldn’t get traction. They have not been able to peer out of the damnable rut they created for themselves. Now, after Hastert, Boehner, McConnell, Cochran, et al ad nauseam, the villagers are coming at them with pitchforks and torches...if you listen closely you can hear the bass line rumble of tumbrels in the tumult.
Trump is Dr. Guillotine...
Either you forgot a sarc tag or you’ve got no idea what you’re talking about.
Thomas Sowell knows more about conservatism than most of the Trump supporters on this board combined.
This is why Obama was elected, and it's why Trump needs to go away.
This is why it's a good idea to let grownups run the show.
If you are bothered by something Tom Sowell has to say, I assure you: The problem is yours, not his.
The man is a living national treasure.

Quite a research link-list on post 105! [Pro-Cruz Alert]
That was a nasty portrayal of Thomas Sowell. Someone should hit the ‘abuse’ button on that guy.
But back in post 48 I laid out clearly the flaws of this article. Almost as if someone else wrote this. I can’t imagine Sowell laying out a case in such a goofy fashion. He’s way too smart ...

I only have a few issues with Donald Trump (and I may end up voting for him in our state's primaries) but one of them is the fact that his fans seem convinced that mob rule has ever accomplished something positive in all the times it has been tried. It hasn't. What it creates is a culture of ideological purity, where eventually even people like Thomas Sowell are fair game for disagreeing with your views.
With that being said, it is a fact that Donald Trump's legacy is chock-full of terrible, anti-conservative views, and, yes, "deals." It may actually be true that the man has evolved into a Conservative in the last three months. But I will repeat that you are offended by what Dr. Sowell has to say here, the problem is yours not his.
‘One of the great things about FR is that we used to be able to disagree with other FReepers, if not respectfully, at least civilly.’
It goes through phases. A presidential primary can be our toughest time.
‘... but one of them is the fact that his fans seem convinced that mob rule has ever accomplished something positive in all the times it has been tried.’
Boston Tea Party
But actually Trump supporters are not all ‘mob rule’. In fact, Trump doesn’t want mob rule. He spoke out against the Oregon Militia Uprising.
‘... where eventually even people like Thomas Sowell are fair game for disagreeing with your views...’
I called Thomas Sowell out on his goofy, self-sabotaging hit piece. Completely beneath his intellect to write it.
‘With that being said, it is a fact that Donald Trump’s legacy ...’
A rebellion against muslim barbarism in Europe. Nice legacy.
A rebellion by SanFransico voters against the ‘Sanctuary City’ policy. Nice legacy.
As for the Wall and his deals in DC ... no legacy yet.
Hey, he doesn’t even need me to defend him.
FRegards ....
To quote pandering to her audience Trump Supporter Ann Coulter: The Boston uprising is the single exception that proves the rule.
Heck, just look at the way he dealt with Megyn Kelly and FoxNews.
‘Art of the Deal’ is NOT ‘roll over and play dead.’
