I would vote for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton. Many of the Republicans who have declared that they would never vote for Trump gave carte blanche to politicians who have been complicit in the growth of the government leviathan. These Republicans have ignored conservatism in the name of party politics, and their broken promises gave rise to Donald Trump's candidacy.
Nonetheless, I will not be voting for Donald Trump in the primary. I take my conservatism seriously, and I also take Saint Paul seriously. In setting out the qualifications for overseers, or bishops, Saint Paul admonished Timothy, "If anyone aspires to the office of overseer . . . he must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil" (1 Timothy 3:1,6).
I think this is also true of political leaders, including those within the conservative movement. In October 2011, when many of the other Republican candidates were fighting Barack Obama, Donald Trump told Sean Hannity, "I was [Obama's] biggest cheerleader." Trump donated to both the Clinton Foundation and Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign, as well to Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, and other Democrats. In 2011, according to the website OpenSecrets.org, "the largest recipient [of Donald Trump's political spending] has been the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee with $116,000."
In a 60 Minutes interview with Scott Pelly, Trump aggressively supported universal health-care, saying, "This is an un-Republican thing for me to say. . . . I'm going to take care of everybody. . . . The government's gonna pay for it." He supported the prosecution of hate crimes. He favored wealth-confiscation policies. He supported abortion rights. On all these things, Donald Trump now says he has changed his mind. Like the angels in heaven who rejoice for every new believer, we should rejoice for Donald Trump's conversion to conservatism.
But we should not put a new conservative in charge of conservatism or the country, so that he does not become puffed up with conceit and fall into condemnation. Republicans have wandered in the wilderness already by letting leaders define conservatism in their own image. Donald Trump needs more time and more testing of his new conservative convictions.

Sad to see freepers taking advice on who’s a real conservative from a Hillary voter like Erickson.
Let me tell you something a FReeper told me recently :-)
If Cruz wins, I win
If Trump wins, I win
If Hillary! wins, we all lose.
For the meantime the fun continues.
Maybe YOU will understand if it comes from THE BOSS:
No one is better at border security, national security than Trump.
Sounds pretty damn conservative to me.
Want to talk about cutting taxes, cutting spending, cutting regulations, cutting government, cutting cronyism, cutting corruption, growing the economy, putting our people back to work, making America great again?
Trump does. And he sounds pretty damn conservative to me.
Want to defend God, family, guns, country? Want to build the greatest military ever so no one dares mess with us?
Trump does. And he sounds pretty damn conservative to me.
Want to build a coalition including conservatives, capitalists, blue collar workers, veterans, gun owners, religious people, minorities, freedom-loving Americans of every stripe?
Trump does. And heâs doing it. And that sounds pretty damn conservative to me!
Reagan Revolution meet the Trump Revolution.
No excuses for the tone. None needed.

Can’t believe The Kelly File tonight. They are apoplectic over Trump, even Katie Pavlich. The GOP had their chance at saving America, and they showed their true colors. They don’t give a sh!t about us, it’s all about continuing their DC lifestyle and power trip. I’m sick of all of them.
Also from the boss:
Build a wall, enforce the law, deport them all. End anchor babies. End sanctuary cities. Slap a moratorium on Muslim invasion, er, immigration. Investigate the mosques. Secure the borders, secure the nation.
Cut the taxes, cut the spending, cut the regulations, cut the government. Strengthen the economy, bring back the jobs.
Rebuild the military.
Buck the media, buck the GOPe.
Sounds pretty conservative to me.

What was Reagan's position on ethanol?
"I will get Government OFF the back of the People"
That's how he won 49 states.
TTTT!
So you really don’t know his position on ethanol?
Don't tell me what Conservatism is.
And it isn't Donald Trump.
BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You hit the nail on the head. A out and out Narcissist is right. I for one will not vote for him , period!
Is modern Conservatism open borders and bad trade deals ?
Exactly...they have completely redefined conservatism....no American with a brain agrees with them.
Good luck with that.
Can’t answer the question, eh?
That sounds frightening similar to another who said likewise....
Don’t agree...
If Trump wins, we lose big time too.
The question bores me.
Oh.... so now we call Conservativism...”Modern” ....Conservativism?
Interesting how subtle words can be added or manipulated just enough to give them another meaning....often distortion and deception works that way.
NRO published 23 of these Trump hit-pieces in their last-gasp Get-Trump Symposium. I suppose you’ll post all 23 as separate posts.
I watched four of the NRO yahoos on Megyn Kelly tonight and was absolutely stunned at the vapidness and duplicity of their attacks against Trump. Most repeated the mantra over and over again that conservationism was all about “principles and ideas”, but not a single time did they mention anything about ACTING to do anything with those “principles and ideas”.
Much of what they said was simply false or ridiculous, like one comment about Trump destroying “centuries” of conservative ideas and principles. Multiple times they indicated that Trump was unfit because he hadn’t spent decades “paying his dues” or “honing” his conservatism. They attacked Trump for positions held decades ago and at the same time dismissed that same issue regarding Reagan’s evolution. The most outrageous accusation was that Trump was a “strong man” who wanted the trains to run one time, and not-veiled-at-all reference equating Trump to Mussolini.
These people were truly pathetic and their absolute fear, panic, and hatred of Trump could be practically seen oozing out of very pore.
Clearly, these people are frightened that they and their ilk will become completely irrelevant when Trump is elected President. It was clear that they feared and loathed Trump FAR more than Hillary or any other Democrat. It was also clear that they are totally out of touch with the outrage in the GOP electorate as a consequence of the GOP elite winning both Congressional Houses and not doing a damn thing to stop any portion of Obama’s agenda.
This really looked like a last gasp by the old guard to put on a full court attack one last time before Trump actually starts winning primaries.
As far as I’m concerned these people are traitors and liars and don’t give a damn about conservatism or our country. They only care about themselves. Personally, I was completely outraged at how these people pretend like they are the great keepers of THE CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES and pretty much anyone who supports Trump is an uneducated yahoo.
Also, my impression was that Kelly was actually subtly on Trump’s side as her questions really seemed to be designed to give these Trump-haters substantial amounts of rope to hang themselves with, which they they proceeded to do with great gusto.
At any rate, it’s important not to forget that only a few weeks ago, Trump singularly upset the whole election apple cart!
Trump set the national agenda by opposing illegal immigration and bringing up other issues that the GOPe and their allies desperately wanted to avoid, and now they can’t.
The GOPe was not prepared for this, and as a consequence they don’t have a clue about what to do, hence their almost universal collapse into a pile of quivering jello, flip-flopping like a bag of Mexican jumping beans dumped on a hot griddle.
Trump has exposed those who pretend to be conservative but are really just fronts for big money establishment campaign donors who purchase their candidates with campaign “donations”.
Trump, by actually being a real man, has exposed the other candidates (Cruz excepting of course) and their allies for the weak little sniveling sellouts that they really are.
Trump’s vociferous truth-telling and fearless neutering of the kommie media have been the catalyst that triggered a massive revolt amongst conservative voters who are infuriated at the GOPe Congress doing absolutely ZERO to stop Obama’s agenda, and suddenly the GOP RINO leadership is in full blown panic mode and in full blown retreat, and the SMALL conservative House contingent smelt blood in the water, took heart, and charged in against a weakened, frightened and paralyzed GOPe leadership, and Boehner was taken out as a sacrificial lamb.
Trump is absolutely correct when he says that without Trump in the race, everything would be same-ol’, same-ol. The Joyful Tippy-Toes Turtle would be creeping closer to the finish line, Boehner would still be safely ensconced as Speaker, and there would be no mention of illegal immigration are any of the issues surrounding it by any politician in either party, other than possibly how critical it would be to pass immigration “reform”.
The media are loath to make the connection, but it’s obvious that the Boehner resignation was yet another falling domino, toppling due to the Trump Effect, because Trump’s unabashed truth-telling and fearless neutering of the kommie media triggered a revolt amongst the great unwashed GOP masses which emboldened a few conservative Congress critters to grow a few pairs.
And our nation wouldn’t even be having ANY of these conversations about illegal immigration and the myriad of other Obammunist issues destroying our country if it wasn’t for Trump. Instead, we’d simply be debating which RINO, GOPe squish would be least likely to be stomped by Hillary, and the GOPe would once again be exhorting the “base” about how critical it is for us to once again vote for the “lesser of two evils”, that is, vote for the GOPe side of the Uniparty coin.
And do note that ALL of the oligarchs and plutocrats are frightened to death of Donald Trump because the billionaires and millionaires can’t buy him like all of the other politicians they routinely purchase, because Trump doesn’t need nor want their money, and the kommie media is frightened to death of him because he isn’t afraid of them either, the bottom line being that Donald Trump can not be controlled by the rich and powerful or the corrupt media, so for anyone who is truly for campaign finance reform and wants to take money out of politics, voting for Trump is the only reasonable choice.
President Trump is really the last hope for this country: if he can’t undo any of the damage wrought by the Obammunists, the U.S.A. is done.
So least we forget, the above, and much more, are called “The Trump Effect”.
