Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz was born in Canada; he is not a "natural born citizen," and he is not eligible to be president.
And this is an issue that isn't going away, contrary to The Sacramento Bee's assertion, ("Trump's 'birther' lunacy, the sequel," Editorials, Jan. 7)
The Constitution is very precise: "No person except a natural born citizen ... shall be eligible to the office of President." The founders knew what they meant.
John Jay, later the first chief justice of the United States, wrote: "the commander in chief of the American army shall not be given to, nor devolve on, any but a natural born citizen." Later, one of the authors of the 14th Amendment, Rep. John Bingham of Ohio, wrote: "Who are natural born citizens but those born within the Republic?"
Congress has passed a statute that says if one of your parents is a U.S. citizen, you are an American citizen, too, no matter where you were born. Cruz's mother was born in Delaware. That makes him a "citizen" by statute, but not a "natural born citizen" within the meaning of the Constitution.
If both of Cruz's parents had been American-born, Cruz would have a stronger case. However, his father was born in Cuba.
Every other president and presidential candidate in our history was born either within the United States or one of its possessions. At no time ever was Calgary, Canada, where Cruz was born in 1970, a U.S. possession.

It doesn’t matter if Cruz (or whoever) is a natural born citizen. There is simply no way to enforce this particular clause through the court system. Such scenario have been played many times with the current President. If you sue Cruz before him being elected President, you have no standing. If you do it after that (when majority of electorate votes for him), you’ll find no judge (SCOTUS included) willing to overturn the will of the people. It is a waste of time, in my opinion, and a waste of bandwidth...
At least the state SOS should do his job and actually determine their eligibility when they file.
The requirements are very simple. It’s cost less thana hundred bucks per candidate- even at government prices.
Yeah, those founders were a bunch of nose-picking retards. Everybody knows it's a "living breathing document".
Why can he be a loyal Senator or Congressman but not President?
Barack Obama.
My husband is a student of the Civil War, and he got me hooked on Gettysburg. Been there about six times now. It gets to you every time even if you think it won’t. That’s why I got so pissed off about the Confederate Flag thing. OMG, I even called the Mayor of Gettysburg and gave him the what-for for about 40 minutes.
Notice I suggested he might get on the legal team to support his side (someone has to be on loosing side ). Daddy as a lawyer taught me not to argue with __________ Let them expose themselves completely in front of knowledgable people So you encourage them -— point in the direction of humiliation
IT probably is a good idea to give Jim the heads up. information
Yep the Establishment/GOPe knows this....., and that is why they are pushing Cruz.
Then once they have Trump knocked off, then they will Judge shop with the DNC to disqualify Cruz based on where he was born.
Wake up Cruz supporters. You are being set up by the Establishment and the GOPe. They hate Cruz as much as Trump if not more.
“Yeah, those founders were a bunch of nose-picking retards. Everybody knows it’s a “living breathing document”.”
Yes, this thing. My goodness, after seven years of toil I am ‘bout worn out. But my devotion to the country, to the Constitution, will give ME no peace. That churlish people today would even THINK this:
“If you think archaic 18th Century wording should disqualify an American born in Calgary from running for President, its stupid.”
My God.
I hope some people start brining lawsuits challenging trumps natural born citizen status.
Yeah, except everything you described only applies to democrats. A conservative Republican is fair game, with a red lazer-dot on his forehead.
Good for you! BTW, I got the last Confederate flag out of Amazon and display it proudly in my house. My American flag is displayed outside.
Gettysburg is beautiful and moving. Last year, we did Antietam and Gettysburg. I flipped out over that beautiful West Maryland town (Sharpsburg) and battlefield. Walked into Dunker Church and stood in Bloody Lane. What does Nikkie Haley know about this? Obviously, nothing. Ill-educated dolt.
How would they do that? Born here to US citizen parents.
Here in forum people are exposed to both sides okay, but the lying side is known to seek overwhelming volume by numbers of posters and posts - run with me, I'm in the herd.
I figure a public post Cc: Oz creates some tension. I'll likely be called a liar and disruptor, wrong, etc.
Jim will handle things fine. The issue may burn out without an admission from Cruz, or it might resolve with a coming clean (doubtful). I don't see any need to rat Oz out any more than I already have.
See #44.
Yes. How would his U.S. Senate campaign have gotten off the ground if the Canadian citizenship issue were common knowledge?
While we’re on the subject: Let’s review how BO went from State Senator (eligibility issues reviewed?) to U.S. Senator (eligibility issues reviewed?) to POTUS? At least one gate out of those three should have shut him out. BO openly declared his father was a British subject at the time of his birth (British East Africa a.k.a. Kenya), thus making BO a dual citizen (if we are to believe the HI birth story). So would a dual citizen of the UK and the U.S. even be eligible for State Senator?
Will send an email soon
Who, of the horde of candidates is not on the ballot in all 50 states?
And why are they still being allowed to be muck up the debates?
Actually, that statement makes you a member of "the Constitution is a living document" club, along with the Democrats and the "progressives".
You make a good point thecodont.
What alerted your sister to the loss of her Canadian citizenship?
