In Defense of Ted Cruz’s Quip About “New York Values”
Redstate ^ | 1/16/16 | Josh Hammer

As a born-and-raised New Yorker finishing up law school in the Midwest before getting ready to permanently take my oversized cowboy boot collection and Gadsden Flag paraphernalia down to Texas later this year, I want to chime in on the “New York values” feud from last night’s Republican Presidential debate. If you did not see this particular part of the Ted Cruz v. Donald Trump brawl, here you go.

The media, being Acela corridor-centric, has naturally tended to take Trump’s side. And yet, as my friend Harry Enten notes at 538, an April 2015 YouGov poll showed that more Republicans (49 percent) said they had an unfavorable view of New York State than said they had a favorable one (38 percent). The Cruz campaign is already fundraising off of the New York Daily News’ shameful front-page cover this morning—a cover, ironically, which itself helps prove Cruz’s underlying point. Indeed, it hardly seems at all obvious that this exchange will end up helping Trump or hurting Cruz on the ground in Iowa, in South Carolina, and in the March 1 “SEC Primary.” But I nonetheless want to put out a few thoughts of my own.

Notwithstanding Trump’s shrewd obfuscation of the underlying critique by nostalgically reverting to Rudy Giuliani 2008 campaign-style braggadocio, everyone listening knew exactly what Ted Cruz meant when he lambasted Donald Trump for exuding “New York values.” This line of attack quite clearly has neither anything at all to do with individual New Yorkers—many of whom are proud conservatives, and even some of whom I know to be close confidantes of Cruz himself—nor anything at all to do with the truly heroic actions of N.Y.P.D. and F.D.N.Y. first responders on September 11, 2001.

While I like both of these candidates and will vote for the eventual winner of the two, I sense that Sen. Cruz made a tactical error in his assessment of NY values. The topic has no intrinsic value electorally and actually is divisive...

A perfectly valid way of framing the election is over values. Trump has had most of his life the most liberal NY values. Cruz values smaller government, Trump loves big government solutions, Cruz values morality, Trump supports the gay mafia and is colleagues of the NY mafia. Trump is ok with graft and pay-to-play corruption, Cruz finds it distasteful. These are big differences and in an election the differences need to be highlighted. If you find it divisive that conservatives do not want to unite with liberalism than you and I share a different vision for liberty.

No need.

Everyone knows what Ted Cruz meant.

Those feigning butt-hurt and the faux outrage are all carrying out Alinsky tactics.

Agree with this article. One thing Trump supporters conveniently forget is that not too long ago, Trump asked Iowans if they were stupid.

You know what this tells people? It tells people that Cruz has a hot temper, that he has poor impulse control, that he doesn’t think before he acts, & that he lashes out at people who have nothing to do with the person he’s angry at. He doesn’t even consider the consequences to himself. I don’t know about anyone else, but I call that volatile & unstable. *I* wouldn’t hire him. There’s no telling what he’d do.

And then, he’s not even sorry. That’s something a sociopath would do. That ‘’apology’’ was outrageous. He sure as hell didn’t take responsibility for his behavior. But he does that a lot. It’s always somebody else’s fault.

And it’s not just spur of the moment situations. He had plenty of time to clear up his citizenship status BEFORE he launched a run for the Senate. Let alone president. That’s what any normal, rational person would do.

Was it sound financial judgement to put everything they had on the line & go into hock for 2 million dollars on a gamble? What if he’d lost? And what if one of his daughters got sick- or his wife?

This guy’s got issues. Big ones.

Tell me about those four Trump bankruptcies again?

Bankruptcies are a normal part of business. In all probability, Trump’s personal finances were, obviously, protected.

Believe it or not, some TV and radio pundits based in New York are trashing Cruz's "New York values" line of argument as anti-Semitic. These include Geraldo Rivera (no surprise there) and former Reaganite economist Larry Kudlow. Kudlow really threw a fit on his radio show today, saying that Cruz's attack on Trump's "New York values" disqualifies Cruz from the presidency, because of its "divisiveness."

Well, from this Jewish perspective, such trashing of Cruz on this issue is stupid. Since when does Judaism support complete "pro-choice," pro-"gay marriage", and rigid gun control positions? No, these are Obama-Clinton-leftist social issue views, NOT views necessarily supported by Jewish law and custom.

And since when does New York values equate to Jewish values on social issues? It turns out that the percentage of New York city's and New York State's population that is Jewish has been on a downward spiral for 50 years. Seems like a significant number Jews have left "liberal" "New York values" behind. Could at least some of that outward migration be due to an opposition to "New York values" and the state and local government policies that they impose?

If you folks wish to continue to run against 1995 Trump, be our guests.

When reality comes home to you, it will be a rude awakening.

I didn’t see any anti-Semitism in his remarks although clearly I thought they were inappropriate and not helpful to his election prospects.

I can’t speak for the other boroughs but Manhattan still has a large percentage of Jews. They really define the culture - in a good way, generally.

>>> NY Values are to cry 9-11 when someone points out you are a rude liberal

Worth repeating. And clearly true by the fact that the loudest complaints are coming from NY liberals.

In the moment of the exchange, I felt that Trump had bested Cruz with his reply. But, upon reflection, the one aspect of Trump that has always left me squirrelly is, how else to say it, his “New York values.” That hasn’t changed.

Trump's personal finances were, obviously, protected.

So it is responsible to gamble with other people's money and leave other families unprotected. Is that a NY value? Because here in the mountain west we have a different name for it.

Thank you for your concise informative response. The difference I see between these two candidates is style. Cruz is a politician, Trump is a businessman. We have seen the gamut of the former in the WH and I am convinced that they are not so accomplished. I sense we need a businessman who can negotiate a better deal. Cruz is beholding to other politicians and investors, Trump is not.

You have assigned gays and the mafia to the Trump campaign. Seem to have heard that Cruz actually met with gay supporters for a cash infusion. Please annotate your documentation for your highlights against the Trump campaign. Thank you.

I, for one, am sick of libtards crying amti-Semite at the drop of a hat. If they must do an ad ominem, could you please leave the Jooos! out of it? For that matter, since when does being an anti-Semite disqualify anyone from being POTUS. The Present occupier of the WH should be disqualified a dozen times over, if that were any criteria. Richard Nixon and Harry Truman were both known for occasional anti-Semitic cracks, and they each did the Jewish State a solid in their time. FDR was the darling of Jewish voters, and he turned back the Missouri. anti-Semitic is as anti-Semitic does.

As for my co religionists, real Judaism opposes abortion, homosexuality and immodesty (among other things). It is hardly a Liberal religion. That my fellow Jews from supplant Judaism with the religion of present day Liberalism and the Democratic party is a tragedy and a constant source of humiliation for me. Also, Geraldo Rivera is an eliminationist antisemite, who wants the six million Jews of Israel killed. Jerry Rivers has a Jewish mother, too. A real whacko that fellow is.
