Did Trump walk into a trap on “NY Values” fight?
Legal Insurrection ^ | 1/15/16 | William A. Jacobson

The exchange between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump on “NY values” was one of the highlights of last night’s debate.

While Cruz clearly was referring to liberalism, he used a phrase that left him open to Trump’s counterattack invoking 9/11:

he media is thrilled with Trump’s response. Of course, much of that media is in or from NY City. I expressed last night that I wasn’t sure that the issue would play in Trump’s favor outside NY.

I was born in NYC, spent my early childhood there, grew up in and returned to the NYC suburbs after law school until moving to Rhode Island in 1993. And since 2008 have lived (originally part time now full time) in Ithaca.

I understand what Cruz was referring to. And it has nothing to do with knocking the heroism of NY police and firemen, or how New Yorkers reacted under attack. It has everything to do with political, economic and social outlooks which are not accepted in the Republican Party in general much less among conservatives.

The Cruz campaign apparently thinks this is a fight it needs to have, via Washington Examiner:

first of all, I don’t know or care if London is the heart of Britain or if Tokyo is the heart of Japan. Second, those are phony analogies.....I suspect London is far more representative of all British thinking than NYC is of all American thinking. Ditto the Tokyo/Japan flawed analogy.

All the good things you like about NY are things...all you hate about NY are the VALUEs.

so what are you saying? Having the back of someone who is wrong is more important than standing up for the truth?

I guess you are. You and I have different values apparently.

I don’t think the NY centric media will let it go, and trump won’t be able to resist......

Not so different. You both have too many of the same values.

Disagreeing on who will win this NY values dust up isn't the same as differing in values.

You may be right, but as I said, Trump has shown himself as far more resilient, and smarter, than most have given him credit for.

He's the best media manipulator I've seen since Reagan, he shouldn't be underestimated.

There are conservatives in NYC, they just are out-numbered greatly by the liberals.

William F Buckley was a New Yorker.

Non-liberal New Yorkers values are very much the same as those in the hinterland.

As I said, I was raised in a small town in South GA and had strong Christian values. I met many folks in New York that shared my values.

I came to conclude that the liberal side of New York was based on a foundation of religion (actually the lack thereof).

The human need for a religion is a powerful thing. When they refuse to believe in God, they create their own. Liberalism seems to be just that...a religion for non-believers and hedonists.

Liberalism in NYC has created a huge vacuum. There is a great urge in New Yorkers to find some meaning that cannot be found in liberalism. It is this vacuum into which Tim Keller has stepped. And the reaction has been profound.

If Cruz thinks that campaigning against NY is a good strategy, he is sadly mistaken. Those who live in glass houses....

Cruz is the insider pretending to be an outsider. He is a product of Ivy League schools; he has spent most of his working life in government; his wife works for Goldman-Sachs (Headquarters NYC); his major donors include the Club for Growth' Goldman-Sachs, and a billionaire hedge fund sugar daddy. Cruz advocated a 500% increase in H-1B visas. Do we really need another first term senator with little executive experience as President? Do we really need a grandstanding gadfly who is considered a pariah in his own party unable to work with his colleagues?

So who is the elitist? What blue states that Obama won in 2012 will Cruz win in 2016?

That’s a bit obtuse, but I suspect you are like many—committed to a candidate and that’s all that matters.

I’ll accept Trump, Cruz as my first tier, and I’ll also accept all the remaining except for Christie and Bush. Christie because of punishing parents seeking help for their homosexual children and Bush because of my rejection of dynasty coupled with his liberalism. I’m far more interested in the nation than petty disputes with fans of personalities.

...was Trump demonstrating his NYC values when he voted for Obama?

Uh, no, he didn't, Trump backed both McCain and Romney.

Those two are likely to end up as the final two, and I'm fine with that. I'll support either of them, for very different reasons. I still prefer Cruz, but Trump isn't far behind for me any longer.

As to the others, I agree about your two, but I also have a deep and personal revulsion to Kasich that I can't get over (unsure as to exactly why), and I have a difficult time with Marco's full throated gang of eight foolishness.

Hey Eddy, If you are so interested in “who I am” for supposedly addressing the great and honorable “legend in his own mind,” C. Edmund Wight, I suggest you waste your time doing a google search on “Awgie.” (BTW You re the one who decided to make this personal. A good sign you were losing your argument).

Anyway, back to “Awgie.” (I'm so glad you asked. It gives me an opportunity to talk about my favorite subject). “AWGIE” is an acronymistic pseudonym for Average White Guy Insurance Executive. (Clever right?! But a little mis leading because I did a career change in my mid 50’s and am now a Physical Therapist. (No I dont want to hear about your bad back).

Lets see, what else...Been married twice, to the same woman! Try that sometime especially if you want a lesson in humility.

My main hobby is music. I play the fiddle and the ukulele and often go to open mics and perform. I also sing in a barbershop quartet. Been doing that for 20 years both on the competition stage as well as paid performances.

I have written, directed and acted in musical comedies produced by my local barbershop chorus. We performed before 1000’s of people.

I am the inventor and creator of a soon to be launched product/business called “The Mobility Bar 10 Minute Home Exercise Program.”

Using my knowledge as a PT and my observations of the aging process (I am 66) I have developed the worlds greatest home exercise system!

Which is why I do what I am about to do...put on my bathing suit, grab my back pack and meet my best friend ( a guy I grew up with in Flint Mich) and spend the day on St Pete Beach (sunny mid 70’s) running jumping throwing playing catch laughing talking to beautiful young girls in bikinis.

Then after a couple hours of vigorous youthful physical activity on the beach, my friend and I will retire to the coolest beach bar in Florida, the “Toasted Monkey” on St Pete Beach.

We may even get up and sing with a really good blues and rock band called “Horses Wild.”

So Eddy, if you're ever in the area, bring your walker and your oxygen tank and join us. We are there 52 weeks per year! You will have so much fun!

BTW Eddy, if you are still reading this. As PT I want you to take time from your successful career as a writer and do some stretches. Your posture is terrible from years of hunched over writing.

Oh,and if you are still reading this, consider yourself SCHLONGED!

Here are "New York values" on display...

...2008 Election, votes for Obama:

New York County (Manhattan) - 86%
Queens County -75%
Kings County (Brooklyn) - 79%
Bronx County - 89%
Richmond County (Staten Island) - 52%

...2012 Election, votes for Obama:

New York County (Manhattan) - 84%
Queens County -79%
Kings County (Brooklyn) - 82%
Bronx County - 91%
Richmond County (Staten Island) - 51%

In other words, New York City (with the exception of Staten Island) is simply a hopeless Liberal hive drenched in "Liberal values".

How can his judgment about someone be so wrong? He was convinced Obama would be better than George W Bush.... Do you think Obama has been better?

Scalia, great mind, great man. He probably remembers Teddy Roosevelt, like teens now know who JFK was. Teddy, another “conservative” who loved war and ran against the Republican so the Democrats would win, was from NY. The last time a Conservative politician won office in NYC was several decades ago, probably 5 or 6. Corrupt unions, quarter million dollars to buy the right to run a taxi, the UN, Wall Street, corruption and slimeballs. That is my thought about NYC. Would not want to visit, will never get that close to the “rats cage”.

Trump supported McCain and Romney in 2008 and 2012 respectively. That is a well-known fact.

“You are the one who predicted anything. I predicted nothing. ;-)”

Indeed. But I was talking about myself and the gazillion others predicting whether Cruz’s remarks would hurt or help him. But sounds like you’ll be safe from any ridicule or “I told you so” one way or the other!

I am not psychic. I cannot see into the future. It does seem that others think that they CAN see into the future as if they have a stethoscope on the pulse of the whole nation. Predicting sets up oneself for ridicule. That may turn out to be YOU! ;-)

I like both Trump AND Cruz so that it does not matter to me which one of them wins the nomination. Each have their plusses and minuses. In my mind the plusses and minuses kind of cancel each other out.
