Did Trump walk into a trap on “NY Values” fight?
Legal Insurrection ^ | 1/15/16 | William A. Jacobson

The exchange between Ted Cruz and Donald Trump on “NY values” was one of the highlights of last night’s debate.

While Cruz clearly was referring to liberalism, he used a phrase that left him open to Trump’s counterattack invoking 9/11:

he media is thrilled with Trump’s response. Of course, much of that media is in or from NY City. I expressed last night that I wasn’t sure that the issue would play in Trump’s favor outside NY.

I was born in NYC, spent my early childhood there, grew up in and returned to the NYC suburbs after law school until moving to Rhode Island in 1993. And since 2008 have lived (originally part time now full time) in Ithaca.

I understand what Cruz was referring to. And it has nothing to do with knocking the heroism of NY police and firemen, or how New Yorkers reacted under attack. It has everything to do with political, economic and social outlooks which are not accepted in the Republican Party in general much less among conservatives.

The Cruz campaign apparently thinks this is a fight it needs to have, via Washington Examiner:

Cruz did not win that moment, but that moment is not the deal. It could well be that Cruz wanted to make this issue draw out.

But tell me, which NY values do you lust for? Gays? Taxes? Regulations? DeBlasio? Schumer. Yeah, that’s it, Chuck U Schumer is your choice for Trump’s running mate I bet. Now that would be a NY value dream ticket. Glad to know you’re on board.

I think we're both in agreement that the longer this issue is highlighted, the more Cruz will gain ground.

It's going to be interesting to see if Trump wades back in, or changes the subject.

Trump will never just change the topic. He’ll twist on this until he think he has won it. Sometimes that is good. In this case it will hurt him, because at the end of the day Cruz was right. And, you’re right. The longer this goes on, the more Cruz will gain ground.

Yep....if you stand up for the truth - take the immediate back lash that almost always comes with it - you will win the argument. Mitt would've won his 47% comment too...because it IS THE TRUTH. But he backed down.

The irony is, it's Trump who's shown us the value of doubling down on the truth more than anyone else...and today his supporters are not smart enough to see that this is exactly what Cruz is going to do, and why it will work.

Trump has shown himself to be fairly smart, his moves have been very good so far.

I think he won this one early, but will lose (this one) if he doesn't go back to his central formula.

This is important for both campaigns. Cruz has to double down to be effective here, knock Trump off message if he wants to make a gain just before the primaries start.

My take is simple. Cruz lost the values part and Trump lost the eligibility part. In terms of a debate. Another judgment will be rendered by polls. A consequential judgment will be rendered by votes. So, a draw at the debates, we're starting to get polling data, and 2 important actual votes are just 2 and 3 weeks away.

Ok,thats just funny and desperate. Here's reality Eddy. I am a midwesterner living in Florida. I have a deep negative bias about NY City values. Never been there and wouldn't enjoy going. Live in an area full of obnoxious NY and Northeatern snow birds.

So I know what Cruz was trying to tap into. And certainly there is plenty to criticize. But Cruz failed to leverage the issue properly and simply teed it up for Trump. Then he stood there with Trump swinging for the fences and took the full force of the bat up side the head. I was cheering for Trump and cringing for Cruz.

Cruz is done. Cant wait for Trump to focus on Hillary.

I agree. Cruz can win this. Double down, do all the talk shows he can, and make his point.

I don’t know who you are, and of course it’s easy and gutless (and meaningless) to sling insults when you are not man enough to own what you say.

Having said that, I am used to being days, weeks, months or years ahead of low information voters. I am ahead of you on this. Cruz will win this fight because NY values are what they are......NY values ARE WHAT THEY ARE. And you can’t change that. And they are despised in most of the country and despised EVERYWHERE a Republican has a chance of being elected. period.

history will vindicate me on this.....guaranteed......this NY thing is not a one minute deal. Trump won the first battle. He will not win this particular war. No way. NY values are what they are. Maybe you’ll share which NY values you cherish??????

There is so much there for Cruz to hit. For one... say, was Trump demonstrating his NYC values when he voted for Obama? All republicans who voted twice for Obama, raise your hands? Trump is definitely your guy...

That's where he should start.

NYC is like Vegas. It’s a great place to visit, and when you leave you’re glad what is there stays there.

In fairness to Rooster, when he said, where firefighters who raced to the Twin Towers, it was the initial point Trump made that had Cruz sheepishly applauding (and losing the initial skirmish).

I still think if Cruz doubles down, he will end up further ahead on this issue in the long game.

I'm not certain how Trump will counter, but based on his track record so far, I wouldn't put it past him to bring this one to a draw even if Cruz stays the course. Trump's shown himself to be pretty good at this. Underestimating him has been a mistake so far.

Roasting seems to have reformatted my hard drive.

That said, if London is the heart of Britain, and Tokyo is the heart of Japan...then NYC is the heart of the U.S.

BTW, I am a Southerner (born and raised in South GA), but spent a big part of my career in NYC.

I despise the City's liberal side as much as all we Freepers do. When you live there, you can literally feel the communist influence. Taking the Wall St express bus downtown each morning from the Upper East side, I would see an old building on the lower eastside that had painted on it "Workers of the World Unite." There were little hints all over town like that.

Disgusting stuff

But, as an economic, legal, social, literary, musical, artistic, and cultural center, NYC is still America's heart, in my humble opinion.

If he does what you are suggesting, I will applaud big time.

It will take away the aura he has developed as not being capable of leading, or being tough, or taking on something and winning. It will erase the doubts of many who saw him take the Clinton sex slime off the table, while Trump eviscerated them in one small blow back.

Dedication, perseverance, industry, resolve, recovery, rebound, and others. I served 24+ military years with many New Yorkers and never doubted one of them. They will have your back when they say they’ve got your back.
