Here's Why Shares of Gunmaker Smith & Wesson Are Jumping

by Robert Hackett

January 5, 2016, 8:58 AM EST

The stock is up 6% premarket.

Gunmaker Smith & Wesson SWHC 12.11% is projecting an incredible start to 2016, which sent shares up more than 6% in premarket trading.

The company raised its revenue and earnings guidance for the current quarter and fiscal year, based on strong sales at recent gun shows as well as an uptick in year-end FBI background checks, an indicator that potential customers are looking to obtain gun licenses.

Smith & Wesson now expects sales between $175 million and $180 million from $150 million to $155 million for its third and present quarter, which ends Jan. 31. The company also boosted its adjusted earnings outlook, raising its estimate to between 39 cents and 41 cents from 27 cents and 29 cents for the same quarter.

The optimistic guidance improved Smith & Wesson's already bright prospects for the fiscal year, which ends April 30. The company expects revenue between $650 million and $660 million, up from its earlier projection of between $625 million and $635 million. The company also raised its expected adjusted earnings to between $1.36 and $1.41 per share from between $1.26 and $1.31 per share.

Smith & Wesson's revised guidance comes on the heels of President Barack Obama's intention to tighten gun control laws.

One of the finest revolvers ever built, and that three inch barrel is the perfect fit.

One of my son in laws will be getting my forty some year old Model 19 for his birthday this year. Hate to part with it but it couldn’t go to a better new home. An elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

The wheel gun in post #1 has 4 holes on the near side of the cylinder. It’s a .22 as noted in post #15.

Just FYI, no worries.

The one posted earliest is in .22 caliber. I carry a Taurus copy in .22 magnum with two inch barrel. Eight rounds and reloadable using ammo strips. My carry is fitted with a laser, also.

“I’m looking at the M&P Shield in 9mm, anyone have hands on experience with it?”

If you purchase that weapon be sure to buy a magazine loader as well or your thumbs will be in pain for weeks.

Also realize that the weapon has No safety selector. The action is like a Glock pistol. So if you draw it out of your holster keep your finger away from the trigger or you will shoot yourself.

I use tha pistol everyday as a duty weapon.

We have 4 of them in our family. Xmas gifts last year and this year. Nice little personal protection gun. Easily fits in your pocket, even with an extended mag.

ObamaCare Extended To Policing Gun Ownership

BY THOMAS MCARDLE

11:09 AM ET

“If you like your gun, you can keep your gun” is definitely not anything you’ll be hearing from President Obama soon.

You may never have thought that a simple visit to the doctor could lead to the FBI breathing down your neck, but the president’s new executive actions on gun control could lead to just that, mortally wounding the long-established presumption of doctor-patient confidentiality.

Obama’s directives apparently trump long-standing federal rules preventing doctors from disclosing mental health matters. Now the executive branch will “expressly permit certain HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) covered entities to disclose to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) the identities of individuals who are subject to a Federal ‘mental health prohibitor’ that disqualifies them from shipping, transporting, possessing or receiving a firearm.”

Currently, if a doctor discloses a patient’s private information without that patient’s authorization, the physician could be sued for malpractice or invasion of privacy. The president now apparently wants violating that confidential bond to be treated as an act that promotes public safety.

And the question of “mental health” is entirely subjective. If you tell your doctor you woke up Monday morning feeling like killing yourself, or that your spouse made you mad enough to reach for your hunting rifle, will that warrant a call to the FBI? Will a federal SWAT team then pounce, just in case you have a gun or two in the house? Such law enforcement overreach is by no means an outlandish scenario.

The ObamaCare database, it turns out, was only the beginning of this administration’s violations of the medical privacy of Americans. Now doctors are set to be enlisted in the nation’s federal gun police.

You’re looking for the S&W Governor Model for the .45/.410 with an MSRP of around $900 to $1100 depending on if it has the laser grips. The pictured gun is the 317 Kit Gun with a MSRP of $760. You should be able to find both for less.

Great to hear! I’m targeting a somewhat middle-sized gun, something that wouldn’t be a brick if I choose to carry and yet still have enough room to grip it reliably. Hoping to get my hands on the M&P Shield, M&P, and SD9VE in the weeks ahead.

Thank you for the reply. Haven’t been to a shop or range yet to evaluate the gun yet, but one of the first things I would have done would have been to look for the safety... Thanks for the heads up.

While I know the safety actually resides between my ears, I’ll have to think this through.
