Dale L. Bumpers, a liberal governor and four-term Democratic senator from Arkansas who came out of retirement in 1999 to make a passionate closing argument defending President Bill Clinton against removal from office in a Senate trial, died on Friday at his home in Little Rock, Ark. He was 90.
His death was confirmed by his granddaughter Linn Bumpers.
Mr. Bumpers was part of a generation of moderate Southern Democrats, among them President Jimmy Carter, who emerged in the late 1960s and the â70s. He always said his proudest achievement had come early in his career when, as a small-town lawyer in the 1950s, he guided his native Charleston, Ark., to become the first community of the former Confederacy to integrate its public schools.
But he is remembered more for what he did in the twilight of his career.
Three weeks after retiring from the Senate, he returned on Jan. 21, 1999, to speak to his former colleagues on behalf of Mr. Clinton, a fellow former governor of Arkansas. The House had charged the president with perjury and obstruction of justice for lying under oath about his sexual affair with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky.

Carl Sanders - Now, he may have been a moderate Democrat.
He certainly was a lot classier than Carter. Then again, so is your average sewer rat.
He never lost an election: that’s not true of David Pryor, Mr. Bill, Winthrop Rockefeller, Orval Eugene Faubus, J. William Fulbright, Frank D. White, Asa Hutchinson, Mike Huckabee, and so many others. His hatred of Jesse Helms is what I remember most about Mr. “Dandy Dale”.
Hope they bury him face down.
Another pro-abortion politician enters Hell.
I would never have sent it to him because he was so liberal, but I always thought it would be clever if he put out stickers for his supporters’ cars saying, “I’M STUCK ON BUMPERS”.
LOL.
but I have no use for any politicos protecting grifters, rapists, mafiosa, and other crooks....that says something about character when they protect such people...
Good riddance.
I heard he did...
Yeah, because people in their 90s never die naturally.
Turns out I’m wrong: Bumpers lost a 1962 race for the Arkansas state House in which his father, William Rufus Bumpers, had previously servedLike the father of Mr. Bill, William Rufus Bumpers died in a car wreck.
Sometimes the terms are nearly interchangeable, certainly for all practical purposes, they are mostly interchangeable. Everett McKinley Dirksen was called “conservative” but was at the beckon call of his friend LBJ even though Dirksen backed Goldwater in 1964.
You must not be Arkansan. People there truly believed in “Dandy Dale,” as he was humorously called.
If they were or are phonies, dj, it’s what the American people truly desired.
Javits was not a liberal. He was a Socialist, close to the old Communist wing of the GOP (and yes, in NY, there was one).
To them, it’s interchangeable. “Liberalism” is “Moderate.” Anything to the right of far-left is a pejorative.
Dirksen died before he could refute the media whitewash of history that the Dems were the Civil Rights party.
