This is precisely what Donald Trump, national GOP front-runner but second place in Iowa, told an Iowa crowd this week while stumping for votes.
Just remember this -- you gotta remember, in all fairness, to the best of my knowledge, not too many evangelicals come out of Cuba, okay? Just remember that ... just remember.
...We will not dedicate time, space or energy to parsing those words in ways that might offer some alternative meaning than the one most evident and likely, which would be this: Donald Trump thought it would advance his political aims if voters in Iowa were reminded that Ted Cruz is a Cuban (technically half-Cuban) and/or cast doubt on whether Cruz is a true evangelical.
This comes from the the ever-useful section of campaign play books that say tell voters why your competition is "not like us."
...
First, Donald Trump's knowledge of the Cuban religious diaspora is, apparently, limited and outdated.
In Cuba right now, Protestant and Protestant Evangelical churches are experiencing rapid membership growth. In the United States, Latino-Americans with ancestral and direct links to many different Latin American countries, including Cuba, are driving some of the only growth in many Protestant denominations. Latino evangelicals represent the fastest-growing religious group in the United States. Some are Cuban-American evangelicals.
To be clear, the majority of American Latinos are Catholic. But the share who are Catholic slid from 67 percent in 2006 to 59 percent in 2013....
...
Finally, Ted Cruz is a self-identified evangelical and the son of an evangelical -- and many would say extremely conservative -- Cuban-American pastor. We have no more reason or authority to doubt that than Donald Trump's declarations that he is a life-long practicing Christian, even if he cannot name a Bible verse. That is between Trump and his God.

What - did they give Jenna "I'm Not Jenna Jameson" Johnson some time off to attend an orgy or two? Or four?
I think someone pointing out that one of the leading conservatives on the USSC today is from Queens NY was a nice touch...don’t you?
NY-3 ... Cuba 0
We are voting Trump who will be our next President, Isara crybaby.
Note he attached...”Don’t be fools” at the end of his rant....typical manipulation tactic Trump uses to maintain his following.
His entire compaign is focused on manipulation of the masses and media,... Trumps obviously a ‘celebrity politician’ who exploits his fame and his insider knowledge of how the media works to maximum effect...... He’s said very little other than to transform the nominating process into a ‘daily’ reality Tv show which looks to be running for a year.... keeping people tuned into the next Trump episode show on full display.....just a different stage.
“Sheep”...projection from one of the suckers who fell for Trump’s cynical Bible-waving ploy.
Cruz took money from homosexual Republicans. So?
Trump is on record that he supports traditional marriage for now but is “evolving.” His wife posed naked with another woman for a photo shoot.
And you, as a Southern Baptist, support that. You want it to lead the nation.
See, you really need to learn that you can’t get up on that moral high horse when you support Trump.
I don’t believe that....anymore than I believe Trump....but it is ‘a show’ many tune into.......voting is another story yet to be seen.
Talk about twisting someone's words. You have to assume Cruz is using the royal "our" to make his statement into something negative. However, the simplest and most logical reading of his statement is that he is referring to our shared values as Christians. Perhaps you do not share those values or beliefs, and that is why you cannot understand that basic concept? Or are you just so dedicated to Trump that you will look for any way to tear down any possible challenger to his coronation?
Since we all seem to accept Islam as a “religion” then I guess anything goes so I don’t care what is said about any “religion.”
For it or against it or decrying it it doesn’t matter.
Yes....Trump already is responding to the fact he needs to be concerned about his supporters going to the polls and actually voting. There are several who have stated they were at the rallys but not voting for Trump...........and they were there for ‘other’ reasons....the gal with the baby photo said she was there because she’s been a loyal watcher o his show and wanted to see him, but she’s not voting for him.
Cuba was known as a Catholic nation. To me, Trump’s message makes sense. One would expect Catholics to come out of Cuba.
Here in Michigan you can’t split your primary ballot which means any democrat that wants to cross over and vote for Trump has to sacrifice every other down ticket democrat.
I don’t see them doing it when they’re so desperate to regain control of the state.
Trump has no idea how the Spirit of God works......when a candidate brings his childhood bible signed by his mother as evidence he’s a Christian...it’s anything but convincing and was used just as another prop on his stage show.
Rush Limbaugh nailed it in 2012 when he said Romney is winning like a liberal and will lose the general election because of it.
Romney fixated on the urban areas and big crowds while ignoring the true base in flyover country.
Yes, Cruz is making the personal connection, which counts. With Trump, there’s the “hey, you never know what’ll come out of his mouth-—let’s check it out” factor.
Dang, that sounds familiar, LOL.
“However, the simplest and most logical reading of his statement is that he is referring to our shared values as Christians.”
He certainly was referring to shared Christian values, but he connected “our” with him receiving that vote as the natural progression voting based on those Christian values; that was my point. He was saying, “If you vote Christian values, you will have to vote for me. My campaign and Christian values are the same.”
“Perhaps you do not share those values or beliefs, and that is why you cannot understand that basic concept?’
Just plain snot. Usual snark from Cruz supporter.
One big difference is the fact that Cruz is a far better campaigner than Santorum was and has far more energy.
Santorum effectively tied Romney here in Michigan and that’s nothing to sneeze at. In 08 John McCain finished almost 10 points behind Romney in Michigan.
