Recently, I asked my students what they thought about commentary that appeared in the Guardian newspaper in November suggesting that France and Britain had failed their immigrants through clumsy -- and ultimately alienating -- efforts to promote multiculturalism (in Britain's case) and assimilation (in France's). In this way, author Kenan Malik said, French and British policies gave Islamism an entree into isolated Muslim communities.
Nearly all my students rejected the premise, arguing that immigrants were responsible for their own actions whether they were isolated or not. Of course, many of these students come from families who fled countries terrorized by Muslim extremists and have no sympathy for them. But they don't blame Western multiculturalism for the rise of home-grown Islamism. "That's silly," shrugged one Syrian girl.
Why, then, I asked them, don't Muslims march in the streets of London, Paris and New York loudly condemning the Islamic State? Because, they answered, mainstream Muslims are too scared that the extremists would come after them. The class brainstormed about what could be done instead. Most concluded that they, too, would be afraid to call attention to themselves.
When I asked another class what responsibility we have to explain to others that terrorists don't represent all Muslims, the response was mixed. One Saudi student said it was not at all our responsibility. "If a (Western) person wants to learn about Islam, he should Google it," she said. Another, an Egyptian, was angered by the question: "If I hear one more time that Muslims have not done enough to condemn terrorists. . . ." Many Muslims are weary of such criticism.

Good point. I'd guess Satan since the Nephalim / fallen angels had sex with females on earth.
Better that they go through a deep sepuku.
My first thought as well.
Worth repeating. The so-called "moderate" Mohammedans are scared of the jihadis and are the actual targets of terrorism. When the moderates see terrorism, they inherently know that if they "get out of line" that they will be hurt. Moderates are tall grass, jihadis are the vipers in the tall grass.
Can someone please post that picture with the bearded fanatics and their sign “Kill all those who say Islam is violent”?
Thx
The West has to stop trying to impose democracy on the Muslim countries because that can only lead to disaster (see Egypt). But perhaps some enlightened middle-eastern rulers (King Abdallah of Jordan, for example) could try to slowly build an intellectual base for a less barbarian form of Islam.
The solution of the problem of Islam cannot be purely political because politics is always based on intellectual/spiritual ideas. I think secular leaders of middle-eastern countries in the second half of the 20th century made a big mistake. They neglected Islam because they thought Islam would gradually disappear instead of trying to cultivate a form of Islam which is compatible with modern world. Of course, they could not avoid this mistake - they were mostly socialists (But I do not know why middle-eastern monarchs, who were not socialists, could not see the potential for the jihadi wave)
My conclusion is there are three possible scenarios: 1. To destroy Islam militarily. 2. To lose and see the end of civilization on earth. 3. To help the civilized minority among Muslims create an intellectual base for civilizing Islam.
I'd have loved to hear the end of that sentence, since it sounded like a threat.

This is the fantasy they would have you believe. Not the reality of Islam.
Geezus.. this is naivete' at it's best.
This is akin to asking Hitler to please examine his motives.
Are you familiar with the writings of Stephen Coughlin? His latest is Catastrophic Failure.
There is a nonviolent, mystical, and humanistic version of Islam called Sufism (certain practitioners of which are popularly-known as “Whirling Dervishes”). The Sufists worship in certain of their homes under the benign guidance of a teaching leader. However, because Sufis aren’t mosque-centric, the are treated with hostility by Sunnis and Shia Muslims alike, so they practice their version of Islam VERY much on the DL, if you catch my drift.
4. Border fence their occupation and insert all of them. Getmore
“....I’m gonna blow myself up” would be a happy ending. ;)
Won’t happen until after they have been defeated — and severely chastised.
I think the real reason moderate muslims don’t speak out is because they agree with the extremists’ goals. Not necessarily the tactics... but the goals.
You've heard the old saw about the difference between extremists and moderates:
Extremist muslims want to kill all non-muslims. Moderate muslims want extremist muslims to kill all non-muslims.
WHOA! At this rate the Washington Post will 'discover' the kindest thing we can do for American Muslims is to KEEP OUT the millions of new Muslims who want to come here... Maybe in 10 years the Washington Post will REALLY start to get it... 'new' Muslims bully Muslim-Americans already here.
As a side note to the brain-dead Washington Post - Mexican Americans are NOT thrilled with illegals flooding across the boarder. Cesar Chavez of the United Farm Workers of America said he would have his own mother arrested if she crossed the border to work illegally...
Dig deeper Yasmine Bahrani ...
Islam is not compatible with western societies, end of discussion.
They hate everyone including each other and themselves and have been that way for ever.
And there is the crux of the issue. The only good Muslim is a bad Muslim.
