Huckabee stands by ad critical of Cruz

Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is defending an ad critical of 2016 GOP rival Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-Texas) comments on same-sex marriage.

On "Fox News Sunday," the former Arkansas governor was asked whether the pro-Huckabee ad's editing was selective.

"No, not at all," Huckabee said. "And there's nothing selective, there was nothing deceptive. The point is that in Iowa he's made a major point, and he's pitched to evangelicals as a person who is utterly authentic, he's going to fight for religious liberty, he's going to protect the right of people to disagree with decisions on same-sex marriage. But that's not what you heard in that Manhattan fundraiser and that's the only thing that I have pointed out."

A super PAC called Pursuing America's Greatness recently produced the ad in Iowa, which includes audio of an exchange between Cruz and an unidentified person at a New York fundraiser. The man asks Cruz whether he views his opposition to marriage rights for same-sex couples as a "top-three priority." In the ad, Cruz is heard simply replying, "No."

But the ad drew criticism from The Washington Post, which pointed out that Cruz's comments were longer.

"No, I would say defending the Constitution is a top priority," he said in the audio, obtained by Politico and recorded at a fundraiser in New York. "And that cuts across the whole spectrum -- whether it's defending the First Amendment, defending religious liberty, stopping courts from making public policy issues that are left to the people. And I also think the 10th Amendment to the Constitution cuts across a lot of issues."

“She probably thought this article would hurt Cruz. She was wrong.”

BFAC posts articles that are newsworthy. Trump-haters probably believe that attacking Trump supporters would help Cruz. They are wrong.

BFAC, I think the response of Pro-Cruz people to an article like this is entirely normal and predictable. Characterizing defenders of Cruz as haters is kind of a lefty gig, don’t you think? Shouldn’t we conservatives be above that kind of play? Especially those of us who are totally committed to living our lives in the light of Scripture?

I for one do not hate Trump. I don’t trust him further than I can throw Trump Towers, but I would not be allowed by Christ to hate him, even if he was a bitter enemy. So I don’t know why you or anyone goes there. FR is supposed to be based on Judeo-Christian principles. Jim has been very clear about that. I don’t see why we can’t have those same principles govern our political conversations.

Now I do understand people get all stirred up about their candidate. That’s fine. That’s good, healthy political competition. And that’s one of the reasons I like the Cruz campaign. They are making a noticeable effort to campaign like Christians. I’m not seeing that in the Trump MO. Again, I’m not hating on him. I just don’t want a person like Trump running the country.

His connectedness to constitutional principles is not clear to me either. Kelo, for example. Also, his apparently poor grasp of the so-called settledness of the recent gay marriage decision. And I’ve never heard him walk back his criticism of us Christians, back in that Advocate interview. Yes, it was from a long time ago (2000), but he was backing hate crime legislation, which is codification of thought crimes, an extremely anti-conservative position. Now if he did walk it back and I missed it, I’m open to hearing the retraction.

But taken all together, I’d really rather have someone with a longer better track record of supporting the things I believe in as a conservative Christian, and in this election cycle, that person is Ted Cruz.

Peace,

SR

Post directed at me...

“Given her posting history, pretty good educated guess on your part.”

I stand by my response...

Given the posting history of Trump-haters, pretty good educated guess on my part that a comment like this would be posted.

Wouldn’t you say someone who only comes to a forum to disparage another candidate or candidates around election cycle times is “of Satan”?

That kind of behavior seems pretty deceptive to me, and thus Satanic. Wouldn’t you agree?

Stand by whatever you like. It still makes no sense to me. Do you think I hate trump because I think he’s wrong for our country?

Peace,

You can hide behind Bible verses all you want (another thing Satan does by the way) but at least I don’t think Bill Clinton “...was a decent President” http://freerepublic.com/focus/news/3357549/posts?page=51#51

My personal take? You’re a fake, here just during election cycles to throw a monkey wrench into the purpose of FR, which is to promote *conservatism*, not “a decent President” [like Bill Clinton]. You’re probably a liberal who’s getting all kinds of kicks out of getting FReepers to support the less conservative candidate in a primary election.

Go ahead, throw another irrelevant Bible verse at me but anyone who follows that link above and knows your posting history will know who’s the real agent of Satan here.

My profile explains why universal health coverage will actually be more cost effective than what we have now. That is the conservative approach.

Universal healthcare is a worthy goal, but not government-run healthcare.

I think the best answer is Rand Paul's lifetime insurance policy similar to a whole life insurance policy.

Employer-provided health insurance doesn't make any more sense than employer-provided home insurance.

Correct. That is what I said on my profile page. Nothing should be run by the government which can be run by private sector more efficiently. Look at Medicare. It is a single payer government run system. It is going broke, and the service is bad. Fraud & waste is north of 25%. Try finding a good doctor who accepts new medicare patients, if you move. It is getting harder and harder. We moved 3 times in last 15 years, and each time it was a headache.
