If you are white, and you are reading this letter, I ask that you don't run to seek shelter from your own racism. Don't hide from your responsibility. Rather, begin, right now, to practice being vulnerable. Being neither a "good" white person nor a liberal white person will get you off the proverbial hook. I consider myself to be a decent human being. Yet, I'm sexist. Take another deep breath. I ask that you try to be "un-sutured." If that term brings to mind a state of pain, open flesh, it is meant to do so. After all, it is painful to let go of your "white innocence," to use this letter as a mirror, one that refuses to show you what you want to see, one that demands that you look at the lies that you tell yourself so that you don't feel the weight of responsibility for those who live under the yoke of whiteness, your whiteness.
I can see your anger. I can see that this letter is being misunderstood. This letter is not asking you to feel bad about yourself, to wallow in guilt. That is too easy. I'm asking for you to tarry, to linger, with the ways in which you perpetuate a racist society, the ways in which you are racist. I'm now daring you to face a racist history which, paraphrasing Baldwin, has placed you where you are and that has formed your own racism. Again, in the spirit of Baldwin, I am asking you to enter into battle with your white self. I'm asking that you open yourself up; to speak to, to admit to, the racist poison that is inside of you.

Racism is a bit like when people assume that all people of a given ethnicity or skin color are alike.

Never wrong ...Prof George Yancy’s NYT opinion piece is as cryptic as it is provocative. He has pretty much reached 1750 comments in the two days since it was posted. Unsurprisingly the comments range from the uncritically supportive to fulminating outrage.
My considered response is in the form of two questions: Is it possible, Prof. Yancy, that you are wrong? If yes, what evidence or arguments would be persuasive?

Had a bunch of minority (and no-values whites, for that matter) students in school who simply would not lift a finger to help themselves and expected administrators, teachers and the community to support them. They learned that from their parents who learned it from the Democrat Party. It is a house of cards and it is about to fall.
Dear Mr. Yancy,
I completely reject your assertions, the basis of them, the premises on which they are based. I reject the notions of Derrick Bell that America was founded in racism and the cesspool of hatred that you wallow in and that you and other black racists use to justify the violence that has been created by your ideas.
You want a race war and you have done everything in your power to create one.
Careful what you wish for.

Yeah, we white people are such awful racists. I advise the author of this piece to feel free to leave whatever white country he’s stuck in and go live in any number of nonwhite countries in the world, where, no doubt, the people are so much better. We’ll even help you pack.
If America is so damn racist, how in the hell did this jughead get a job as a “professor” at Emory University? Time for the “prof” to take a deep breath, step back and STFU. He’s a hypocrite.
It’s racist to hold whites under a yoke for crimes that they themselves did not commit. It’s racist to take property that whites have earned and give it to minorities who haven’t earned it and I include money as property since it can be converted into such. It is racist to assume that whites must be perpetually blamed and stigmatized and hated for their culture and the color of our skin. Whites need to get over the guilt and embrace their human rights and independence, their uniqueness and value.

There is only America. Only black racists claim there is a “white America” because they are stupid and feeble minded and believe in the crap race baiters tell them so they can get free stuff.
I occasionally have black people come to my door selling magazines etc. I live in a totally white neighborhood. We have had no incidents or killings when this happens. Now, I can not imagine a white guy going door to door in most inner city neighborhoods coming out unscathed.
