In a recent op-ed -- "If Trump wins the nomination, prepare for the end of the conservative party" -- the always articulate George Will expresses the angst many establishment (and some not-so-establishment) Republicans feel about their frontrunner:
If you look beyond Donald Trumpâs comprehensive unpleasantness â is there a disagreeable human trait he does not have? â you might see this: He is a fundamentally sad figure. His compulsive boasting is evidence of insecurity. His unassuageable neediness suggests an aching hunger for othersâ approval to ratify his self-admiration. His incessant announcements of his self-esteem indicate that he is not self-persuaded. Now, panting with a puppyâs insatiable eagerness to be petted, Trump has reveled in the approval of Vladimir Putin, murderer and war criminal.
It's hard to dispute Will's analysis, as far as it goes, but it only goes so far. No doubt The Donald exhibits some of the traits of an inferiority complex, but the real question is, so what? As Joe E. Brown says to Jack Lemmon at the end of Some Like It Hot, "Nobody's perfect."
All the Republican candidates have their flaws, as does, in spades, the woman far at the front of the Democratic pack, described almost twenty years ago by William Safire in one of the most prescient op-eds ever as a "congenital liar."
But my interest here is not in detailing everyone's weaknesses -- I like to remain friends with people -- but, as a Christmas present to the angst-ridden, to try to explain how Trump's flaws can be turned to the advantage of Republicans and conservatives. This is particularly important if, as appears highly possible, he wins the nomination. What do we do about it?

See? Pj Media are creeps, just as I expected, without having to read their BS article.
You’re an optimist. Merry Christmas to you. :)
Well, empires live. They don’t just sit like cash in mattresses.
In what way are the folks at PJ Media scumbags?
Well yeah I am, a God optimist.
Donald isn’t terribly overtly religious, but he’s been meeting with some optimistic evangelists lately, from the scuttlebutt I hear on Facebook. Maybe it’s my point of view or maybe I’m just noticing things I used to miss. But God is knocking at the door yet asking to come in and dine. It’s we who are getting fickle about the idea. But it may be dawning on Donald.
They're faux conservatives like unto you. I've butted heads with their writers before, who report every inch of slander on Trump they can find, but go out of their way to spread lies to cover up the candidate's they favor. They're not legitimate "conservative" news.
Uhhh-— for the love of Donald its Merry CHRISTmas-— not Xmas. Its like writng a loved one and saying. Happy Birthday X. Bugs me to no end that Xmas crap. Leave Christ in Christmas—— Amen.
Well in the current context this is noteworthy. They are now making nice with Trump, in a Christmas spirit.
Roger's right.
Gotta suck to be the Donald.
You kidding? The article is nasty.
Understand the frustration. The use of the Greek “chi” which looks just like our Romanized “X” to stand for Christ is, however, still frequent. The intention, I believe, is the opposite from what we might expect by calling someone whose name is Thomas, T. This would be more analogous to the “famous Mr. T.”
Exactly. Just look at the source and skip.
If they were catty, now they have become kittens... chill, the motion is going in the right direction.
I agree. I bristle every time I see Xmas. Why not say Christmas? Not wanting to acknowledge what Christmas means and turning it into something else?
I don't see you screeching about George Soros, Warren Buffet and T.J. Pickens....what have they done with their billions except give it to people that riot, tear things down and other things...
What about Wall Street? What about all the super pacs, lobbyists, and others that try to ‘rule’ our Nation, I don't hear you screeching about any of that, does that mean your just jealous of what Trump has done with his life, or does that mean you accept what the rest have done with their billions?
Well, you have to keep in mind who you are trading posts with.
You will not find anyone on this forum who is much more nasty.
X = chi. As in Christos, in Greek (begins with chi).
Think of “Mr. T.” Not just any old chap whose name begins with T.
We could rightly put ornaments on our Xmas trees with X’s on them.
MEOW!
“Nasty” enough to push for Donald.
However I refuse to be “nice” towards what is fundamentally wrong.
I think you sent that message to me in error! Or else I have been misunderstood. I was replying to a poster whom I thought was saying, “Trump has simply kept what he has inherited.” My reply was in essence, “this isn’t SIMPLY keeping an empire, it’s an expanding one!”
